PROGRAM NOTES Der Leiermann (The Organ* Man) Original Text by Wilhelm Müller Drüben hinterm Dorfe Steht ein Leiermann, Und mit starren Fingern Dreht er, was er kann.

Way behind the village stands an organ man, and with stiffened fingers grinds the best he can.

Barefoot on the ice he totters to and fro, and his little plate has ne’er a coin to show.

Keiner mag ihn hören, Keiner sieht ihn an, Und die Hunde knurren Um den alten Mann.

No one comes to listen, no one comes to greet, and the dogs are growling at the old man’s feet.

Und er läßt es gehen Alles, wie es will, Dreht, und seine Leier Steht ihm nimmer still.

And he lets it happen, lets it as it will, cranking, and his organ never staying still.

Wunderlicher Alter, Soll ich mit dir gehn? Willst zu meinen Liedern Deine Leier drehn?

Strangest of the Ancients, must I walk with you? Will you grind my Lieders on your organ, too?

*The specific instrument that is referred to in this piece is the Hurdy-Gurdy; a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The Hurdy Gurdy dates back to the Middle Ages and was used widely in Europe.

PROGRAM NOTES Tanto sospirero (I Will Sigh So Much) Original Text by an Anonymous Poet Tanto sospirerò, Tanto mi lagnerò, Che intender le faro, Che per lei moro!

I will sigh so much, I will languish so much, that I will make her to understand that I would die for her!

Pur l’alma le dirà: “Cara, t’adoro!”

Even my soul will say; “Dearest, I love you!”

Donzelle, fuggite (Young Maidens, Flee) Original Text by an Anonymous Poet Donzelle, fuggite procace beltà!

Young maidens, flee from a handsome young man! If his bright glance penetrates your heart, leave that dart of the perfidious love, which is setting traps for you!

Deh vieni alla finestra (Come To The Window!)

Come to the window, o my treasure, come to console my weeping. If you deny me some relief, I want to die before your eyes!

You whose mouth is sweeter than honey, you whose heart cradles sweet desires! Do not, my beloved, be cruel to me! At least let me see you, my loved one!

PROGRAM NOTES Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen (A Girl or Little Wife) Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder

A girl or a little wife is what Papageno desires. Oh, a sweet little dove like that would be bliss for me! Then I should drink and eat with relish, then I could hold my own with princes, enjoy life in my wisdom, and be as if in Elysium.

A girl or a little wife is what Papageno desires. Oh, a sweet little dove like that would be bliss for me! Ah, can’t I find one, then, amongst all the lovely girls, who would like me? Let just one help me out of my misery, or I shall truly die of grief.

A girl or a little wife is what Papageno desires. Oh, a sweet little dove like that would be bliss for me! If no one will offer me love, then the fire must consume me, but if a woman’s lips kiss me, I shall be well again straightaway!
