UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The University Symphony Orchestra provides a full range of performance experiences. In addition to the standard repertoire, the orchestra performs literature from the Baroque through the twenty-first century. It collaborates with the Pacific Opera Theatre in fully-staged operas and musical theater, and performs major choral and orchestral works with the University choral ensembles. The orchestra also performs concertos with faculty and guest artists, and with students in the annual Concerto Competition Concert.

MEET THE COMPANY
The Pacific Opera Theatre is the Conservatory’s resident student opera ensemble. The program boasts a long history of successfully training singers for the professional arena. Dedicated to the training of strong singer-actors, the curriculum includes an intensive acting course of study which focuses on the Michael Chekhov technique. Productions performed by the student opera company has been recognized regularly by the National Opera Association and the Kennedy Center-American College Theatre Festival. Of particular note, was the inclusion of the Pacific Opera Theatre’s production of La Cenerentola in the 2001 Kennedy Center-American College Theatre Festival’s national event in Washington, DC; this was the first opera to be included in the national festival. Additional works recognized by KC-ACTF include Falsettoland, Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill and the west coast premiere of Glen Roven’s Heart’s Desire. Work recognized by the National Opera Association include La Cenerentola, Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and more recently Dido and Aeneas. Ethan Albala Ethan is a Senior Vocal Performance major, studying with Professor Burr C. Phillips. This is his eighth production with Pacific’s Opera Theatre. In addition to being a student, Ethan works as a Music Director and Conductor for local theatre companies, including Stockton Civic Theatre, and That’s Showbiz Theatre. He has also made many appearances onstage, and has worked as a lighting designer at these venues as well. Ethan plans to continue his training in Musical Direction for the theatre in the future. Mara Baldwin Mara is a freshman music therapy major at University of the Pacific and is thrilled to be a part of the Brigadoon’s cast! She is studying voice under Professor Daniel Ebbers. She has previously performed in high school productions of Bye Bye Birdie, Camelot, and Into the Woods (Rapunzel). She also performed with Youth Entertainment Stage (YES) Company in productions of Beauty and the Beast and Les Misérables. She has learned so much from Professor James Haffner and Professor Burr C. Phillips and is grateful to have the opportunity to be in this wonderful musical. Justin Beasley Justin is a sophomore student at University of the Pacific. He is a Music Performance Major with a concentration in Voice. He is a tenor vocalist who takes lessons and studies under Professor Daniel Ebbers. While attending Pacific, Justin Beasley has performed in the Opera Follies and The Beggar’s Opera both directed by Professor James Haffner. He sings tenor in the PAC Singers choir led by Dr. Yejee Choi. Justin has sung repertoire from music composers and music bands such as Eric Whitacre, John Duke, Epica, Giovanni Bononcini, Native Construct, Franz Schubert, Maurice Duruflé, and Gene Koshinski. Justin wishes to expand his view of music and learn as much as he can from Pacific.

Taylor Carnes Taylor (Jane Ashton/Assistant Director) is a senior Voice Performance Major at Pacific. She studies with Dr. Lynelle Wiens and Professor Burr C. Phillips. Most recently, Taylor appeared as Jenny Diver in The Beggar’s Opera with Pacific’s Opera Theatre. Her performance credits include, Adele in Die Fledermaus at CSU Stanislaus and Cupid/ Spring in Dido and Aeneas with Pacific’s Opera Theatre. Taylor is a two-time winner of the Stockton Opera Guild - Kathe Underwood Scholarship Competition and she has three National Association of Teachers of Singing awards in her categories. Following graduation, Taylor will serve as Assistant Director for the Aspen Opera Center at the Aspen Music Festival and School under the direction of Edward Berkeley. Elyse Coty Elyse is thrilled to be making her debut with the Opera Theatre at Pacific. Previously, she attended the Mikael Eliasen Voice Program at Curtis Summerfest, was a featured soloist in several works including The Peace of Wild Things by Iman Raminsh, Messiah by Handel, and Requiem by Fauré, and sang in several local and state-wide vocal competitions and honor choirs. Elyse is a student of Dr. Lynelle Wiens, and is currently a freshman pursuing a BM in Vocal Performance. She will be joining the cast as a Vendor and ensemble member. She would like to thank her parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends who encouraged her to pursue her dreams, and to all the cast and crew who made this production possible. Nicholas Davis Nicholas is a tenor from Aptos, CA. He began his musical career at Cabrillo College as a classical guitar player. After being pressured by a friend to join Cabrillo Chorale, his first Choir director and mentor, Cheryl Anderson, quickly noticed his natural singing voice and an affinity for classical music and suggested he pursue a degree in vocal performance. Most of Mr. Davis’ solo work he has performed is from the chorale repertoire with one exception. He made his opera debut at the Pacific Opera Theatre in their production of The Beggar’s Opera by John Gay. At Pacific, he studies with Professor Burr C. Phillips. Some notable masterworks he has performed include: Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Handel’s Messiah. Raymond Gallo III Raymond is a third year Music Management student at Pacific looking to find his place in the music industry. His vocal instructor is Professor Burr C. Phillips. Raymond began performing on stage in high school and quickly learned how much music and performing meant to him. His goal is to live a happy life surrounded by music, and people who love music as much as he does. He would like to dedicate this performance to his grandmother. Cruz A. González Cruz is a baritone vocalist from Gonzales, CA. He attended Hartnell College in Salinas and Cabrillo College in Aptos before transferring to Pacific in the fall of 2018.

He was a recipient of the Boronda Study Abroad Program and spent over two weeks in Italy and Cuba as part of a cultural exchange, singing under the direction of Cheryl Anderson. At Pacific, he is pursuing a BM in Music Education while studying with Professor Burr C. Phillips at the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Joey Guidi Joey is a senior Communication major from Jackson, CA, focusing in radio broadcasting. He is a classically trained musician, principally trombone, and has experience with voice acting. Brigadoon is his debut with the Pacific’s Conservatory and only production while at University of the Pacific. Tanya Harris Tanya is currently completing her bachelor degree in Vocal Performance at the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Last spring, Tanya was in her second major production, The Beggar’s Opera as Polly with the Pacific’s Opera Theatre. Her previous engagements include soloist for Gershwin’s Catfish Row Suite with the Monterey Peninsula Concert Band under the baton of John Anderson. In 2017, she had the privilege of being one of four soloists for Beethoven Mass in C Major, under the baton of Dr. Nicolas Waldvogel at Pacific. She would like to thank Dr. Lynelle Wiens, Professor James Haffner and Professor Burr C. Phillips for their patience, support and guidance. Abigail Hernandez Abigail is a soprano and a first year transfer student from Los Angeles. Ms. She began her vocal studies under the tutelage of Diana Tash and Lori Stinson at Los Angeles City College. She is currently working toward her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance at Pacific and is studying with Professor Daniel Ebbers. Abigail made her Pacific debut as a soloist in the 2018 Opera Follies. Maddie Horton Maddie is a second year Music Therapy major with Voice as her primary instrument and studies with Dr. Lynelle Wiens. She recently switched her major from Vocal Performance, but is very grateful for the opportunity to continue performing. She is thrilled to be playing the part of Maggie. Dance was a very big part of her life in high school and she is excited to be able to connect with that part of her life once again through Brigadoon. Nicole Ikeda Nicole is a first year Music Therapy major at University of the Pacific. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i, she took voice lessons from soprano Cathy Goto and graduated from Punahou School in 2018. She is thrilled to be a part of the various programs at Pacific’s Conservatory of Music, and is thankful to her current voice teacher, Professor Daniel Ebbers, for his continuous support. Hannah Lampkin Hannah is a junior Vocal Performance major. She was recently seen in Pacific’s

production of the Opera Follies, singing “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” and in The Beggar’s Opera as Mrs. Vixen. She would like to thank her parents, Gibby, and Conner supporting her. Lastly, she would like to thank Professor Burr C. Phillips and Professor James Haffner for helping her grow as a performer. Amanda Mikkelsen Amanda is a junior Music Education major who studies voice with Professor Daniel Ebbers. She started theatre in third grade with Animal Farm at the Western Stage in Salinas, and continued with theatre until college. She has been in one production since then, Legally Blonde at Pacific in 2017. She spends most of her time teaching lessons privately and at the Zion Academy of Music, Stockton, as well as playing and singing in different ensembles around campus. These include Pacific Singers, Heavy Ensemble, and Pacific Stocktones. She began her participation in the Opera Theatre program last fall with the Opera Follies and is very excited to perform in Brigadoon. Gina Mitchell Gina is a first year Vocal Performance major studying with Professor Daniel Ebbers. She is excited to be here to sing and learn! Her previous experiences she’s most proud of include being in various choirs for 13 of her 19 years of life, notably the Children’s Choir of Chico where she had much of her musical training, going with them on two tours and another this coming summer, taking private voice lessons for six years, playing Cinderella’s mother in Into the Woods at Inspire High School of Arts and Sciences, playing the first lady to the queen in The Magic Flute at Chico State, and attending a national honor choir at a conference for music teachers for five straight years, getting multiple solos. Dion Nickelson Dion, who plays the role of Stuart Cameron, is a freshman at Pacific studying with Professor Daniel Ebbers. Nickelson is exceptionally proud to be making his theatrical debut with Brigadoon. Nickelson is a Music Education major with a choral emphasis, but he also plays the trumpet. Emily Osborne Emily is a junior Music Education major. She currently studies voice with Professor Burr C. Phillips. Some of her favorite past credits include How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Miss Jones) with Sobrato Theatre Society, Dido and Aeneas (Ensemble), and The Beggar’s Opera (Betty Doxy) with Pacific Opera Theatre. Her favorite past-time is spending time with her dog. She would like to thank all her friends and family for their love and support. Carrie Parret Carrie is a senior Music Therapy major at Pacific studying with Dr. Lynelle Wiens. This is her first year performing with Pacific’s Opera Theatre program. She was also in the fall production of the Opera Follies. She participated in high school productions

in her hometown of Olympia, WA, since she was eight years old. During her high school years, she was in several productions including Showboat and The Producers under director Brenda Amburgy. Through her major, Carrie has achieved proficiency in guitar and piano. In the future, Carrie hopes to continue featuring in productions in her new community where she will be completing her Music Therapy internship and her degree. Jakob Sandmeier Jakob is a senior Music Therapy student from Los Angeles. He began studying classical guitar as an Herb Alpert scholar at Los Angeles City College. This production of Brigadoon is the second theater production he has taken part in, the first being The Beggar’s Opera in spring of 2018 with University of the Pacific’s Opera Theater. Sadai Servin Sadai is a sophomore Vocal Performance major at Pacific studying with Professor Daniel Ebbers. Originally from Los Angeles, Sadai graduated from LA City College with an Associate’s of Arts Degree. During her two years at the LACC Applied Music Program, she became an Herb Alpert Scholar. She received notable scholarships given by the LACC Foundation which allowed her to study abroad in Madrid, Spain, for two summers. On her spare time Sadai volunteered at LA Opera as a student ambassador. She was later funded by the LA County Arts Commission to intern at LA Opera in the Education and Community Engagement department. Jorge A. Torrez Jorge is in his junior year studying Vocal Performance under the vocal guidance of Professor Burr C. Phillips and Dr. Lynelle Wiens. Jorge’s previous credits include being featured in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite with the Stockton Symphony directed by Peter Jaffe, Professor Jim Haffner’s Michael Chekhov acting technique seminar at the National Opera Association Conference, and as a featured soloist with Sacramento’s Baroque chamber ensemble Sinfonia Spirituosa directed by Dr. Lorna Peters. Jorge would like to thank his voice teachers, Professor Burr C. Phillips, Dr. Lynelle Wiens, Cheryl M. Anderson and Professor Jim Haffner, for their continuous support and belief in their students. He would also like to thank his parents and family for their continuous love and support throughout his musical endeavors. Paige Tucker Paige (Jeannie) is a second year student at University of the Pacific, majoring in Vocal Performance and studying with Dr. Lynelle Wiens. With a history of theater, choir and dance involvment, she has portrayed roles such as Suky Tawdry, from The Beggar’s Opera and Chip, from the Beauty and the Beast. She has performed in the Opera Follies and has been a dancer in the musical Crazy for You. Paige has been an active member of community and school choirs and has appeared in venues like Carnegie Hall, NY, and participated in Sacramento States CMEA Honor Choir.

Jennifer Barker Gatze (Make-up and Hair Design) has resided in the Central Valley for most of her life and has been involved with theatre for the last 15 years as a freelance designer, stitcher, and performer. She currently works as the Costume Shop Supervisor for San Joaquin Delta College and attends University of the Pacific where she will receive her BA in Theatre Arts. Before her employment at Delta, she spent time in Utah as an Apprentice to a Master Tailor. Her costume designs include Hansel and Gretel (Stockton Opera), Forbidden Planet (Delta), Side By Side (Stockton Theatre Project), A Little Night Music (Pacific’s Music Conservatory), You Can’t Take It With You (Stockton Civic Theatre), and most recently The Winter’s Tale (Livermore Shakespeare Festival). Jennifer has been nominated for several SARTA Elly Awards for creative works in the past. She is supported by her wonderful family and amazing husband. James Haffner (Producing Stage Director) is a Professor of Opera at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. His production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola took first place in the 2001 National Opera Association Production Competition and was a finalist both at the regional and national levels in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. La Cenerentola holds the distinction of being the first opera to be allowed to be performed in the KC/ACTF. More recently, his work was recognized by the KC-ACTF with an encore production of his reworking of Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill. Additional credits include the German premiere of Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day; Das Mahagonny Songspiel, which was presented as part of the premiere Brecht Fest at the Berliner Ensemble; and Dido and Aeneas with the Museumsinsel Fest, Berlin. During the summer months, he has worked as an Artist-in-Residence at the Bay View Music Festival in Michigan and the Bear Valley Music Festival. A 1996 Fulbright Scholar, Professor Haffner is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music holding both an MFA in Directing and an Artist’s Diploma in Opera Stage Directing. He is also a member of the Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab, the National Opera Association and has served as a consultant with Opera America. Professor Haffner has taught at the Technische Universität, Berlin; stateside, he has served on the faculties of the University of Kentucky, Miami University, Webster University and the California State University, Fullerton. Lalena Vigil Hutton (Costume Designer) came into the theater with a love for acting, which was quickly overshadowed by her love of costumes. Previously, she designed The Threepenny Opera for Pacific and is very pleased to be invited back again. Her recent design experience includes Gianni Schicchi and Pagliacci (Stockton Opera Association), Superior Donuts (Capitol Stage), Stage Door (Whitney High), Charley’s Aunt, A Flea in Her Ear, and Sleeping Beauty (Sacramento City Theater). Lalena has also assisted with Shakespeare in the Park (2009-2011) as well as several other regional theater productions.

Brian Scott Johnson (Scenic Designer) is the Technical Director and Senior Set Designer for St. Mary’s High School Theatre Department. He has won numerous local awards for his designs, earned eight Elly nominations, winning three of them for his scenic versions of On Golden Pond, Sweeney Todd and Shrek the Musical. Recent designs at Stockton Civic Theater include Spamalot, Chicago, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Brian wishes to thank his family for their love and support. Don Myers (Lighting Designer) has served as lighting designer for the Stockton Opera Association and Faye Spanos Concert Hall at Pacific since 1989. He has also designed for a number of theater companies including the Woodland Opera House, Sacramento’s 24th Street Theatre, Light Opera Theatre Sacramento, Davis Musical Theatre Company, Stagedoor Comedy Playhouse, and the Sacramento Community Opera Theatre. As an actor some of Mr. Myers’s favorite roles include Alain in The Amorous Flea, Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, Clive in See How They Run, Geoffrey in Stepping Out, and John Box in Box and Cox. For the enjoyment of his granddaughter, he performs regularly with the Chautauqua Children’s Theatre Company. Margaret Perry (Rehearsal Accompanist) has performed throughout the United States and Italy as a soloist and collaborative pianist. She has worked with numerous vocal and instrumental artists and has been a rehearsal pianist for the Utah Opera Chorus and the Utah Symphony Chorus. Dr. Perry is the group piano coordinator for University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. She teaches group piano, piano pedagogy, and aural perception. She is also the opera theatre workshop accompanist. Burr Cochran Phillips (Musical Coach) is an Associate Professor of Voice at the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. As a bass-baritone, he has appeared with the Dallas Opera, the Fort Worth Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Antonio Opera Theater, the Santa Fe Opera, the Chautauqua Opera, the Tulsa Opera, the Sacramento Opera and the Stockton Opera Association in roles ranging from Benoit/Alcindoro in Puccini’s La Boheme to Dr. Bartolo in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. A seasoned performer of oratorio and concert repertoire, he has also appeared with the orchestras of Dallas, Fort Worth, Amarillo, San Antonio, Chautauqua, Little Rock and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Mr. Phillips has served on the music faculties of the University of Texas at Arlington (Arlington, TX), Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX), Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ) and now the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific. He holds the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas (Denton, TX) and the Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, TX). Nicolas Waldvogel (Conductor) is Professor of Music and Orchestra Director at University of the Pacific. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Music History from Yale

University, he studied conducting at Peabody Conservatory and at the Tanglewood Festival. His teachers included Gustav Meier, John Nelson and Seiji Ozawa. He assisted Horst Stein at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin for a production of Wagner’s Ring der Nibelungen. Subsequently, he led the Family Concerts of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Switzerland. He has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, with Anonymous 4 and with Alan Gilbert. His recent credits include a performance of Ives’ immense Fourth Symphony, Verdi’s La Traviata, Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony and the complete Sibelius’ Symphonies. In addition to his position at the University, he is guest conductor of the State Philharmonic “Dinu Lipatti” in Romania.

The National Opera Association seeks to promote a greater appreciation of opera and music theatre, to enhance pedagogy and performing activities, and to increase performance opportunities by supporting projects that improve the scope and quality of opera. Members in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia participate in a wide array of activities in support of this mission. Through its prosperous history, the NOA has primarily served education and performance activities in academic institutions and small regional opera companies. The organization especially welcomes participation of college and university opera workshop directors, students, composers, librettists, scholars, and anyone interested in opera and opera education. NOA holds an annual convention featuring performances, panels, workshops, and other continuing-education opportunities for opera educators, professionals, and students. Major activities of the NOA include the encouragement of young artists and composers through competitions and performance opportunities, sharing resources for collegiate and regional productions, and publication of scholarly articles. Special projects of the NOA include Opera for Youth, the Legacy Project, and the Sacred in Opera. OPERA America draws on resources and expertise from within and beyond the opera field to advance a mutually-beneficial agenda that serves and strengthens the field through various programs in the following categories:

Founded in 1970, OPERA America has an international membership that includes nearly 150 Professional Company Members, 300 Associate and Business Members, 2,000 Individual Members and over 16,000 subscribers to its electronic news service.

Program Additions MEET THE COMPANY
Katie Elson Katie is a junior Music Education major and a student of Dr. Lynelle Wiens. She is a recipient of the Kathy Underwood Stockton Opera Guild Scholarship and Kristina Townsend Memorial Scholarship. She appeared in Pacific’s Opera Theatre’s production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas as Summer/Ensemble, and as Lucy Lockit in John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera. She performed as Juliet in selections from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in conjunction with the Stockton Symphony, and she appeared in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music singing in the Liebeslieder Quintet at Stockton Civic Theatre. Harvey T. Jordan Harvey has performed with numerous regional theatres around the country, including Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Minnesota Repertory Theatre, Drake Theatre Repertory, Capital Stage, Sacramento Theatre Company, Sierra Repertory Theatre, Davis Shakespeare Ensemble, The Show Below, Highland Summer Theatre, Stage 3, and the American Blues Theatre Company. He also served as an Artist-InResidence for the Pacific’s Conservatory of the Performing Arts. Harvey has recently retired from a 36 year career as a Professor of Theatre (teaching acting and directing theatre productions), including eight years as head of the B.F.A. Acting Program at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, as well as 23 years with San Joaquin Delta College’s Actor Training Program, Stockton, CA. He has directed professional theatre productions in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and throughout Northern California, and has served as the Artistic Director for Drake Theatre Repertory in Chicago, Minnesota Repertory Theatre, and the American Blues Theatre Company. He holds an MFA in Acting from UC Davis, CA.
MEET THE COMPANY
Davis Mahoney Davis is a sophomore doubling in the Music Education-Choral and Music PerformanceVoice degrees. He has been studying as a baritone under Professor Daniel Ebbers for nearly four years. He competed in and won singing competitions such as Apollo Night, Northern California’s Largest Amateur Talent Competition, and the Asya Pleschak Scholarship (where he placed first and earned the chance to sing The Vagabond with the Sacramento Master Singers). His major roles in musical theatre include the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz, Shrek in Shrek, and many others. After graduation, Davis plans to attend graduate school to earn his Ph.D. in Vocal Pedagogy. Raphael Pazo Raphael plays the Scottish Great Highland bagpipes, violin and viola, and other Celtic and ancient instruments. He is a music instructor, adjudicator, performer, arranger and composer. He is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and holds a Degree of Fine Arts in Performance and Orchestral Directing. He studied bagpipes (Ceol Beagh and Ceol Mor) with Dugald McNeill and Pipe Major Bruce Hitchins of the College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland. Raphael has done world-wide research in the fields of Ethnomusicology and Music Etiology. He also sings with several a capella groups including Voices of California. Dr. Pazo holds undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in Science, Business Administration, International Relations and Comparative Religion.
