T R A N S L AT ION S L’Ultima Canzone M’han detto che domani Nina vi fate sposa, Ed io vi canto ancor la serenata. Là nei deserti piani Là,ne la valle ombrosa, Oh quante volte a voi l’ho ricantata!

The Last Song They told me that tomorrow Nina, you will be a bride. yet still I sing my serenade to you! Up on the barren plateau, down in the shady valley, Oh, how often I have sung it to you!

Foglia di rosa O fiore d’amaranto Se ti fai sposa Io ti sto sempre accanto.

Rose-petal O flower of amaranth, though you marry, I shall be always near.

Tomorrow you’ll be surrounded by celebration, smiles and flowers,

Mint-flower, O flower of pomegranate, Nina, remember the kisses I gave you!

O Del Mio Amato Ben O del mio amato ben perduto incanto! Lungi è dagli occhi miei Chi m’era gloria e vanto!

O lost enchantment of my dearly beloved Oh, lost enchantment of my dearly beloved! Far from my eyes is she who was, to me, glory and pride! Now through the empty rooms I always seek her and call her with a heart full of hopes? But I seek in vain, I call in vain! And the weeping is so dear to me,

and will not spare a thought for our past love;

yet always, by day and by night, with passionate moan my song will sigh to you.

that with weeping alone I nourish my heart. It seems to me, without her, sad everywhere.

The day seems like night to me; the fire seems cold to me. If, however, I sometimes hope to give myself to another cure, one thought alone torments me: But without her, what shall I do? To me, life seems a vain thing without my beloved.

T R A N S L AT ION S Am Feierabend Hätt’ ich tausend Arme zu rühren!

An Hour Of Rest O that I had a thousand arms to move! That I could, roaring, drive the millwheels!

Ach, wie ist mein Arm so schwach! Was ich hebe, was ich trage, Was ich schneide, was ich schlage, Jeder Knappe tut mir’s nach.

Alas! How weak is my arm! In loading and carrying, In sawing and felling, Every apprentice is my equal.

And there I sit with the whole company, In the still, cool hour of rest, And the master says to all: “I am pleased with your work”: And the lovely maiden bids Us all a good night.

The Eager Questioner I ask no flower, I ask no star; None of them could tell me What I would so dearly like to hear.

For I am no gardner, And the stars are too high; I will ask my little brook If my heart has lied to me.

O Bächlein meiner Liebe, Wie bist du heut’ so stumm!

O brook of my love, How silent you are today! I wish to know just one thing, One word again and again.

One word is ‘yes’, The other is ‘no’; These two words contain The world for me.

O Bächlein meiner Liebe, Was bist du wunderlich! Will’s ja nicht weiter sagen, Sag, Bächlein, liebt sie mich?

O brook of my love, How strange you are. I will tell no one else: Say, brook, does she love me?

That I could blow through every woodland!

That I could turn every millstone! That the miller’s fair daughter would mark my devotion!

T R A N S L AT ION S Mein! Bächlein, lass dein Rauschen sein! Räder, stellt eur Brausen ein! All’ ihr muntern Waldvögeln, Gross und klein, Endet eure Melodein!

Mine! Brook, cease your babbling! Wheels, stop your roaring! All you marry wood-birds, Great and small, End your walbring!

Throughout the wood, to and fro Let one rhyme alone be heard: The beloved main of the mill Is mine, is mine!

Spring, are these all of your flowers? Sun, have you no brighter light? Ah, then I must remain alone, With that blissful word of mine, Go uncomprehended through all the wide creation.

Ecco Ridente in Cielo Ecco, ridente in cielo Spunta la bella aurora, E tu non sorgi ancora E puoi dormir così

Lo In the Smiling Sky Lo in the smiling sky, The lovely dawn is breaking, And you are not awake, And you are still asleep?

Sorgi, mia dolce speme, Vieni, bell’idol mio; Rendi men crudo, oh Dio, Lo stral che mi ferì.

Arise, my sweetest love, Oh come, my treasured one, Soften the pain, oh God, Of the dart which pierces me.

Oh sorte! Già veggo Quel caro sembiante; Quest’anima amante Ottenne pietà.

Oh joy! Do I now see That dearest vision: Has she taken pity On this soul in love!

Oh istante d’amore! Oh dolce contento! Felice momento Che eguale non ha!

Oh, moment of love! Oh, moment divine! Oh, sweet content Which is unequalled!

T R A N S L AT ION S Renctontre J’étais triste et pensif quand je t’ai rencontrée, Je sans moins aujourd’hui mon obstiné tourment, O dis-moi serais-tu la femme inespérée Et le rêve idéal poursuivi, vainement?

Encounter I was sad and pensive when I met you, Today I feel less my persistent pain; O tell me, could you be the long hoped-for woman, And the ideal dream pursued in vain?

O, wayfarer of such gentle eye, are you that friend Who will return happiness to this lonely poet? And will you shine on my reawakening soul Like the native sky upon an exile’s heart?

Ta tristesse sauvage, à la mienne pareille, Aime à voir le soleil décliner sur la mer! Devant l’immensité ton extase s’éveille, Et le charme des soirs à ta belle âme est cher;

Your untamed sorrow, like my own, Is fond of watching the sun set over the sea! Its magnitude evokes rapture within you, And the evening’s allure is dear to your beautiful soul;

A curious and sweet affinity Already links me to you with a living connection. My soul trembles, invaded by love, and my heart not fully knowing you, yet cherishes you!

T R A N S L AT ION S Toujours Vous me demandez de me taire, De fuir loins de vous pour jamais Et de m’en aller, solitaire, Sans me rappeler qui j’aimais!

Always You ask me to be silent, To flee far from you for ever And to go my way alone, Forgetting whom I loved!

Rather ask the stars, To fall into infinity, The night to lose its veils, The day to lose its light!

Ask the boundless sea, To drain its mighty waves And the raging winds To clam their dismal sobbing !

But do not expect my soul To tear itself from bitter sorrow, Nor to shed its passion As springtime sheds its flowers!

Goodbye How quickly everything dies, the rose Uncloses, And the fresh colored mantles Of the meadows; The long sighs, the beloved ones, Disappear in smoke!

We see, in this fickle world, Change Faster than the waves at the shores, Our dreams! Faster than dew on flowers, Our hearts!

One believed in being faithful to you, Cruel one, But alas, the longest loves Are short!

And I say, leaving your charms, Without tears, Almost at the moment of my confession, Farewell!
