PACIFIC CHORAL ENSEMBLES The Pacific Choral Ensembles have had a long and distinguished tradition with the first a cappella choir in the West established in 1916. The Pacific Choral Ensembles are a rich and vital component of Conservatory and University life. They are a platform for the fundamentals of ensemble collaboration, musicianship and musicality, providing an opportunity to learn a myriad of styles and genres while singing together. Membership into the choral ensembles is open by audition to any University of the Pacific student of any major at the beginning of each semester.
PACIFIC SINGERS The Pacific Singers are a select mixed-voice chamber choir that collaborates with the University Chorus each semester for two choral concerts. Other collaborations include with the University Symphony Orchestra and the Stockton Symphony in performance of major choral and orchestral works. This past October, the Pacific Singers, alongside the University Chorus and the Delta Choirs, collaborated with the University of the Pacific Percussion Ensemble in Gene Koshinski’s Concerto for Marimba and Choir. In November 2018, the ensemble made a successful concert tour to Santa Cruz and Aptos area giving six performances and collaborating with various high school and community college choirs. Together with the University Chorus, the Pacific Singers will give present Louis Vierne’s Messe Solennelle in the exquisite space of Fremont Presbyterian Church, Sacramento, CA. Throughout the academic year, the ensemble perform at major University events such as University of the Pacific’s commencement ceremony and Holiday Roar Luncheon, and Regent’s dinner parties.
UNIVERSITY CHORUS University Chorus is a large mixed chorus open to any student in the University by audition. It combines with the other choirs for two performances each semester and performs in both a cappella and choral-orchestral works in a wide variety of genres. This past October, the Pacific Singers, alongside the University Chorus and the Delta Choirs, collaborated with the University of the Pacific Percussion Ensemble in Gene Koshinski’s Concerto for Marimba and Choir. Together with the Pacific Singers, the University Chorus will give present Louis Vierne’s Messe Solennelle in the exquisite space of Fremont Presbyterian Church, Sacramento, CA. PROGRAM NOTES Personent Hodie Personent hodie voces puerulae, laudantes iucunde qui nobis est natus, summo Deo datus, et de virgineo ventre procreatus.
Let resound today the voices of children, joyfully praising Him who is born to us, given by the most High God, and conceived in a virginal womb.
In mundo nascitur, pannis involvitur praesepi ponitur stabulo brutorum, rector supernorum. perdidit spolia priceps infernorum.
He was born into the world, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger in a stable for animals, the Master of the Heavens, the Prince of Hell has lost his spoils.
Magi tres venerunt, munera offerunt, parvulum inquirunt, stellulam sequendo, ipsum adorando, aurum, thus, et myrrham ei offerendo.
Three Magi came, they were baring gifts, and sought the little one, following a star, to worship Him, and offer Him gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Omnes clericuli, pariter pueri, cantent ut angeli: advenisti mundo, GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO!
Let all priests just like the boys sing like angels: You have come into the world, GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST!
Lux Aurumque Lux calida gravisque pura velut aurum et canunt angeli molliter modo natum.
Light warm and heavy as pure gold and the angels sing softly to the newborn babe.
PROGRAM NOTES Ave Maris Stella Ave, maris stella, Dei Mater alma, Atque semper Virgo, Felix caeli porta.
Hail, Star of the Sea, Loving Mother of God, And Virgin immortal, Heaven’s blissful portal!
Sumens illud Ave Gabrielis ore, Funda nos in pace, Muntans Evae nomen.
Receiving that “Ave” From the mouth of Gabriel, Reversing the name of “Eva” Establish us in peace.
Solve vincla reis, Profer lumen caecis, Mala nostra pelle, Bona cuncta posce.
Break the chains of sinners, Bring light to the blind, Drive away our evils, And ask for all good things.
Monstra te esse matrem, Sumat per te preces, Qui pro nobis natus Tulit esse tuus.
Show thyself to be a mother, That, through thee, He may accept our prayers, He, who, born for us, Chose to be your Son.
Virgo singularis, Inter omnes mitis, Nos culpis solutos, Mites fac et castos.
O incomparable Virgin, Meek above all others, Make us, freed from our faults, Meek and chaste.
Vitam praesta puram, Iter para tutum, Ut videntes Jesum, Semper collaetemur.
Keep our life pure, Make our journey safe, So that, seeing Jesus, We may rejoice together forever.
Sit laus Deo Patri, Summo Christo decus, Spiritui Sancto, Tribus honor unus. Amen
Let there be praise to God the Father, And glory to Christ the most High, And to the Holy Spirit, And to the Three be one honor. Amen. Ocho Kandelikas
