Described as “a musician of the highest order” by Stockton Symphony conductor Peter Jaffe, saxophonist János Csontos, '16, is a soloist and chamber musician dedicated to the performance of contemporary repertoire. He has premiered over 15 new works for saxophone as a chamber musician and a soloist. János is Director of Finance and a founding member of ~Nois, a Chicago-based saxophone quartet dedicated to promoting the works of living composers from diverse backgrounds. ~Nois has quickly emerged as one of the premier young ensembles performing new music, and has received numerous prizes including the 2nd prize in the open category at the M PRIZE Chamber Arts Competition, Silver Medal at the 2017 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, second prize at the 2018 North American Saxophone Alliance Saxophone Quartet Competition, and the Grand Prize at the Chicago Woodwind Chamber Ensemble Competition. ~Nois has commissioned 8 new works for saxophone quartet within the past year, and will be in residence at the University of Chicago in the 2018-19 season, where they will collaborate with current PhD students to premiere additional new works for the quartet. ~Nois has also appeared on the Frequency Music series at Constellation in Chicago, as well as the Irving Park Fine Arts Concert Series. Most recently, the quartet embarked on a five-week tour of the Eastern and Southeastern United States, where they presented recitals and masterclasses at 12 different universities and high schools. They were also invited to perform Michael Gordon’s "Big Space" with the Bang on a Can All-Stars at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee. János made his solo debut at the age of 20 as the Grand Prize winner of the Auburn Symphony Young Artist Competition, performing twice as a concerto soloist with the Auburn Symphony. He is also a winner of University of the Pacific’s Concerto Aria Competition, and has performed as a soloist on concert series with both the Auburn Symphony and University of the Pacific’s Symphony Orchestra. His other solo engagements range from multiple appearances on University of the Pacific’s annual Honors Recital to performances at regional and national North American Saxophone Alliance conferences. János holds a bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from University of the Pacific and a master's degree in saxophone performance from Northwestern University. His previous teachers include Taimur Sullivan and David Henderson. He has participated in masterclasses with Dr. Timothy McAllister, Dr. William Street, and Professor Zachary Shemon. János is a member of multiple professional music organizations and honors societies, including Mu Phi Epsilon, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Kappa Phi.
