P ROGR A M N OT E S Logan Feece: The Land of Mir
The Land of Mir is a three-part suite, with each part composed for a different ensemble. Part I is essentially a wind piece, as only the winds of the orchestra play; Part II is mostly a string orchestra piece with a couple of small exceptions; and Part III is the whole orchestral group. The Land of Mir tells a simple story of a king, Bocchi, who is transported 300 years into the future and has to find his way back home by killing Buggy, the Time Wizard. The first part of the suite begins with Bocchi returning to his kingdom after a long adventure, and upon entering his castle, he finds himself alone in the future. After coming to his senses, he searches his now barren kingdom only to find a single soul—a fairy named Mavi. The fairy tells him about Buggy, the Time Wizard, whom he must defeat in order to return to his time to save his kingdom. The second part begins with Bocchi searching for the time wizard and finding his wizardly tower, and it introduces us to Buggy’s villany. The third part begins with the battle between Bocchi and Buggy, followed by Bocchi ultimately defeating the Time Wizard, saving his kingdom from tyranny, and returning to his time, where he is celebrated as a hero for centuries to come. —Note by the composer
