PROGRAM NOTES

Fedora – Amor ti vieta Count Ipanov, a Russian Nihilist, falls for Princess Fedora. At an official reception in Paris, in the lavish surroundings of her apartments, he declares his love. Love forbids you not to love Your slender hand, which rejects me, Seeks the clasp of my hand Your eyes express “I love you” Even though your lips say, “I will not love you” Synopsis and translation by Robert L. Larson

PROGRAM NOTES

Lohengrin – In Fernem Land Lohengrin, knight of the Holy Grail, has been sent to protect Elsa, a noblewoman wrongly accused of murdering her brother. Lohengrin marries Elsa under one condition: that she never asks his name or origin. Alas, she breaks her promise. Lohengrin reveals that his father is Parsifal. His identity being known, he must leave her and return to Montsalvat, realm of the Holy Grail. In a far-away land, unapproachable by your steps Lies a castle called Monsalvat. In the middle there is a luminous temple, As precious as nothing else known on Earth. Inside, a miraculous and blessed vessel Is guarded as a supreme sanctuary. It was brought down by a host of angels, And is to be cared for by only the purest of men Every year, a dove from heaven revisits To reinvigorate its miraculous power. Its name is the Sangrail, And it grants the most blissful And purest beliefs to its Knighthood He who is predestined to serve the Sangrail It prepares with supernal power: Every evil’s deception is lost to him, When he sees it, Death’s power is wiped away Even to him who is sent by it to foreign lands, Appointed as a warrior for virtue’s justice, His holy power will not be taken away, If he goes unrecognized there as its Knight May the Sangrail’s blessing be ever of so noble a cast It must flee the mortal’s eyes when it is unveiled Therefore you shall not doubt the knight, If you recognize him, he has to leave you. Now listen how I heed the forbidden question: By the Sangrail I was sent to you: My father, Parsifal wears its crown. I am his Knight, I am called Lohengrin

PROGRAM NOTES

Rigoletto – Questa o quella At a glittering ball the Duke sums up his cynical philosophy about women to Borsa, a courtier. This one or that one is the same for me As the many others I see around me. I don’t yield the supremacy of my heart More willingly to one beauty than to another. Their loveliness is like a gift With which fate adorns life for us. If today this one comes back to me pleased Perhaps another one will be so tomorrow Let’s detest constancy, tyrant of the heart, Like a cruel disease. Let only he who wishes remain faithful; There is no love if there is no freedom. I scoff at the jealous rage of husbandsThe ravings of lovers. I even defy the hundred eyes of Argus If some beauty arouses me. Synopsis and translation by Robert L. Larson
