PROGRAM NOTES Lusitano; Conklin: Emendemus in melius Prior to joining University of the Pacific in 2018, Andrew Conklin held teaching positions at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and Stony Brook University. Conklin’s work has received critical acclaim in blogs such as Pitchfork and The Line of Best Fit and has been supported by grants from organizations including the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the Howard Gilman Foundation, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Among his current projects, Site: Yizkor, an ongoing collaboration with the multimedia artist Maya Ciarrocchi, was presented in part at the Bronx Museum of Art in 2020, premiered in full in 2022 in Poland, and presented in a new iteration at the King Manor Museum in Jamaica, Queens, in 2023. Conklin earned a 2017 Grammy Award nomination for Best Bluegrass Recording for his contributions to The Hazel and Alice Sessions as a core band member of Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands. His guitar and bass playing can be heard on multiple other recordings and has toured extensively with indie rock bands, bluegrass groups, and improvising combos. Conklin’s partnerships as a composer include those with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Yarn/Wire, Ensemble Mise-En, Spektral Quartet, Ensemble Connect, Tala Rasa Percussion, the Calidore String Quartet, Splinter Reeds, the Microcosmos Quartet, and Earplay. Conklin is also a published writer on the theory, composition, and pedagogy of music.


ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Edwin C. Powell '87 is the director of bands and professor of music at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) where he is responsible for the University Wind Ensemble, conducting and music education methods courses. He is currently on sabbatical and will retire at the end of the academic year. In 2015 he was the recipient of a Pacific Lutheran University Faculty Excellence Award. Powell earned degrees from University of the Pacific, the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and the University of North Texas, where he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting studying with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Previous to his 2005 appointment at PLU, Powell was on faculty at the University of Tennessee, where he was assistant director of bands responsible for the Symphonic Band, the 350-member Pride of the Southland Marching Band, conducting courses, and music education methods courses. Powell maintains an active schedule as a clinician and adjudicator worldwide conducting groups from San Francisco, California, to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He enjoys producing recordings, is a contributing author for the immensely popular textbook series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band (GIA Publications) and is published in the NBA Journal, Voice Magazine, and the Journal of Band Research.


ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Vu Nguyen '00 is an associate professor of music and director of bands at University of the Pacific. He conducts Pacific Wind Bands and teaches courses in conducting and music education. Nguyen maintains an active schedule as a clinician and has served as guest conductor with military bands as well as honor bands across the country. Ensembles under his direction have performed at state music educator conferences, at the Midwest Clinic, and at the College Band Directors National Association Conference. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Nguyen holds degrees in conducting from the University of Washington and the University of Oregon. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from University of the Pacific. Prior to his appointment at Pacific, he served in similar roles at the University of Connecticut, University of Indianapolis, and Washington University in St. Louis in addition to being a visiting conductor with the Indiana University Concert Band. He began his teaching career in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. In addition to his academic career, Nguyen recently retired as an officer in the Air National Guard (ANG) where he was the commander and conductor of the ANG Band of the West Coast.

BAND PERSONNEL The Franklin High School Concert Band is a group of talented young musicians passionate about music and their music education. The ensemble is comprised of students from eighth through twelfth grade and musical experience ranging from one to four years. The Franklin High School Concert band has garnered numerous accolades, including superior ratings at state-level competitions and local festivals.

PACIFIC WIND BANDS The Pacific Wind Bands at University of the Pacific include students who represent music majors, minors, and non-majors from across Pacific. The ensemble performs at least four concerts each academic year. It provides students the opportunity to play a broad range of music for winds, brass, percussion, and keyboards drawn from a repertoire that honors the rich history of the past and looks to the future, ranging from chamber to full wind band instrumentation. Recent premieres and collaborations with composers include Viet Cuong, Kevin Day, Marie Douglas, Catherine Likhuta, Giovanni Santos, Alex Shapiro, Ingrid Stölzel, and James Syler.
