MUSICA VIVA

COFFEE CONCERTS MELBOURNE

WELCOME The four basic tenets I apply when devising Musica Viva concerts are Quality, Diversity, Challenge and Joy, and this year’s Coffee Concerts are a perfect example of how these principles transmute into musical enjoyment. All of this year’s performers are, as usual, of the highest calibre, and are chosen for the exuberance and joy they each bring to the concert platform. But 2018 excels in diversity and challenge. From the entirely unexpected but utterly compelling guitar–cello duo of Karin Schaupp & Umberto Clerici, through to the burnished golden tones of the Australian Brass Quintet, there is an extraordinary range of ensemble styles and repertoire. The outstanding artistry of Melbourne’s own clarinet trio, Ensemble Liaison, draws us back

into more classic fare, while the ARIAnominated Latitude 37, in a rare sextet formation, throws some surprising gems of the early Baroque into the mix. Although all of these musicians have strong overseas connections, the most convincing international credentials come from the winner of the 2017 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Ioana Cristina Goicea, in her debut Australian appearance accompanied by pianist Andrey Gugnin. Melbourne’s Coffee Concerts for 2018 are an arresting combination of talent and intriguing content, and an exemplary embodiment of Musica Viva’s core principles. Carl Vine ao Artistic Director

TUESDAY 27 MARCH

KARIN SCHAUPP & UMBERTO CLERICI

Karin Schaupp Guitar Umberto Clerici Cello Karin Schaupp and Umberto Clerici first shared a concert stage as part of the 2015 Musica Viva Festival, where the combination of guitar and cello proved a major hit. In 2018, these superb musicians bring a program of songs from across five centuries, reimagined for guitar and cello. The program takes the audience on a journey through life, from childhood to a reflection on death and all that comes in between: love, jealousy, family, illness, battles and joys. Program to include: FALLA Jota SCHUBERT Lob der Tränen (In Praise of Tears) RAVEL Kaddish

TUESDAY 19 JUNE

ENSEMBLE LIAISON

David Griffiths Clarinet Svetlana Bogosavljevic Cello Timothy Young Piano The musicians of Ensemble Liaison bring together expertise gleaned from years of study at some of the world’s greatest musical institutions, in the United States, Russia and Italy. In their hands, the clarinet trio is an instrument of brilliant colour and boundless imagination. Beethoven’s B-flat major Trio is a joyous remnant of a time when woodwind instruments were an exciting new novelty, while Ian Munro’s work written especially for Ensemble Liaison, brings the clarinet trio into the modern day. Completing the program is the trio’s own arrangement of Igor Frolov’s Concert Fantasy on classic Gershwin numbers.

Program BEETHOVEN Clarinet Trio in B-flat major, op 11 MUNRO Aus tiefer Not schrei’ ich zu Dir (Out of the Depths I Cry to You) FROLOV Concert Fantasy on Themes from Porgy and Bess (arr Young/Griffiths)

TUESDAY 7 AUGUST

LATITUDE 37

The ARIA-nominated Baroque trio Latitude 37 teams up with three esteemed colleagues for De Profundis, a spellbinding program of sacred and secular music from 17th- and 18th-century Germany. The program’s centrepiece is Nicolaus Bruhns’ deeply moving psalm setting De Profundis, performed with guest baritone David Greco. Be transported by the candlelit atmosphere of Baroque vocal music, performed with the ear for detail and beautiful period instruments which make Latitude 37 one of Australasia’s leading Baroque ensembles.

Musica Viva is pleased to partner with the MHIVC by presenting Ioana Cristina in recital as part of her Prizewinner’s tour of Australasia. GALA PIANO RECITAL

Appearing in Australia for the first time in over 20 years, legendary pianist Sir Andrรกs Schiff brings a program which celebrates the delightful, imaginative world of fantasias. As always with this artist, Bach is at the heart of everything: his ingenuity and virtuosity, as well as his deep faith and humanity, shine through the music of the famous 19th-century composers who followed in his steps.
