MEXA Musica Viva NY presents Mexamorphosis & Musica Viva NY soloists Sunday, October 29 at 5pm All Souls NYC 1157 Lexington Ave., New York, NY 10075
WELCOME TO MUSICA VIVA NY’S 2023-24 SEASON!
T
his season we aim to provide solace, joy, and a chance to discover unexpected connections and uncommon intersections between musical traditions. We invite you to join us on this musical journey which offers experiences that are unique because of Musica Viva NY’s original programming. Our first concert, MEXA, explores connections between disparate musical traditions from various parts of the world including Africa, North India, Mexico and Europe. In collaboration with Mexamorphosis, an arts organization founded and led by Mexican mezzo-soprano and Artistic Director Guadalupe Peraza, we celebrate musical diversity across centuries and cultures. Mexamorphosis is dedicated to building cultural bridges, nurturing a community where artists and audiences alike find a sense of belonging. Guadalupe Peraza, who frequently performs with Musica Viva NY, shares her perspective on this collaboration: “Alejandro and I, both from Mexico, are passionate musicians completely devoted to our craft. As professional musicians, we consistently engage with diverse music spanning various centuries and regions worldwide. Furthermore, we both share a profound interest not only in advocating for our culture and traditions through music but also in uncovering their origins and connections, thereby revealing their intrinsic value beyond the superficial or stereotypical portrayals that we often encounter.” We invite you to join us in discovering the striking similarities between pieces from multiple traditions as they are juxtaposed in unconventional ways during this concert. Many of you have generously supported our recording project, and we are thrilled to announce that the recording will be released on the esteemed Naxos label in the fall/winter of 2024. Recording sessions are scheduled for early December, following our concert on December 3. We are delighted to announce that Frederica von Stade will be singing the solo in Joseph Turrin’s cantata at that concert and for our recording (you will find further details about the recording in this program). Thank you for making this project possible! Lastly, we encourage you to explore the “Did you know?” section in this program to learn about the excellent educational programs we are conducting across various communities throughout New York City as part of our community engagement. As always, thank you for coming and thank you for supporting Musica Viva NY! Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, Artistic Director Jasna Vasić, Executive Director

ounded and led by Mexican Mezzo-Soprano and Artistic Director Guadalupe Peraza, Mexamorphosis is a celebration of musical diversity from different centuries and cultures. Since its first season in 2016, Mexamorphosis has presented cross-cultural programs that question the boundaries drawn between “folk music” and “classical music”, street and concert hall, old world and new world, showcasing connections between contemporary regional Mexican styles and European early music, drawing out influences from Iberia and West Africa. —5—
MEET THE ARTISTS With a rotating cast of artists specialized in diverse musical practices, Mexamorphosis presents intercultural programs that highlight shared roots, timeless collective narratives, and forms of expression that, although seemingly distant, share common ground. Its mission is to establish cultural bridges by fostering a participatory community where artists and audiences alike feel a sense of belonging. Mexamorphosis makes room for each artist to speak their tradition freely, to see themselves through their colleagues, and to discover new modes of expression. Living Up, a Mexican arts and culture magazine, wrote, “This daring, extravagant, and unique show bridges origins and traditions to showcase cultural coexistence, aiming to break stereotypes that distance the audience from classical music…” Previous performances have brought together musicians, dancers and visual artists from traditions such as Son Jarocho, Irish traditional music, early western classical music, West African Griot Music, and Turkish music. Performances have been presented at intimate venues and metropolitan theaters in Mexico and the USA. During this season, in collaboration with featured soloists from Musica Viva NY, Peraza brings together renowned Mexican music representatives Sinuhe Padilla and Victor Murillo; top Hindustani Sarangi player and vocalist Suhail Yusuf Khan, described as “bravely original” (The Guardian); Griot Music collaborators from West Africa include master Kora player and singer Yacouba Sissoko’s “magnificent complex fingerwork” (Afropop Worldwide) and “lacework arpeggios” (The New York Times) and Baba Moussa on the Talking Drum. www.mexamorphosis.org Facebook.com/mexamorphosis instagram.com/mexamorphosis_mexamorfosis Guadalupe Peraza, Artistic Director and Founder, Mexamorphosis “If one came across Guadalupe Peraza on the street, singing, dancing and playing hand percussion, you’d stop and watch [...] when Peraza sang, “Here’s to the good life,” one could momentarily forget the troubles of the world… On the flip side, Peraza [uses] unforced, genuine emotion [and] appealingly pure, direct storytelling. Peraza was unfailingly engaging and fully connected to the text” (Opera News). Mexican mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Peraza has performed internationally on both concert and opera stages. She had her live solo debut with The American Classical Orchestra in NYC in June 2022, after their previous recording of the Chaconne Project in 2020. —6—
