Richard Egarr directs Beethoven Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor Mozart Eine kleine Nachtmusik Haydn Symphony No. 101 in D major: The Clock Richard Egarr (1) director & fortepiano The 2016–17 season marks Richard Egarr’s tenth anniversary season as our Music Director. Equally at home with baroque and classical repertoire and beyond, this programme showcases Richard’s virtuosity and versatility with some of his favourite classical repertoire.

Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven – three of the greatest composers who have ever lived – all wrote in a quintessentially classical style which is marked by elegant structures and exquisite melodies. For many their music represents a golden age, which has never been surpassed. After featuring in everything from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective to Fame, the music in tonight’s concert is instantly recognisable and epitomises the enduring brilliance of these classical greats. CAMBRIDGE CENTRE FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE STUDIES

1

Launched in April 2015, CMPS plays a leading international role in the field of musical performance studies. In Cambridge, the Centre supports a programme of masterclasses, workshops, Side-by-Side events, and other ‘talk-and-play events’ such as lecture-recitals and open rehearsals. These shed light on the knowledge that is created and conveyed in performance, and on how musical performance takes shape over time. During Easter Term 2017, CMPS will host public presentations, ‘Practising Performance’ events, and a ‘Meet the Composer’ session held with the Britten Sinfonia. CMPS will also run a reading group for young researchers featuring talks from visiting scholars. The Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies is directed by John Rink, working in collaboration with Margaret Faultless and Martin Ennis.

Cambridge Performance Studies Forum The events in this Forum are intended to present practice-led research on musical performance and to foster dialogue and debate between musicians, musicologists and others across a broad range of interests and backgrounds. Tuesday, 9 May 2017 5.00pm–6.30pm, Recital Room, Faculty of Music

Workshop: Improvising Rhythm in Performance Jeremy Thurlow (1), Robinson College Stephanie Childress, St John’s College Dan Tidhar, Faculty of Music Performers always shape music through their interpretation of rhythm. But what if a composer’s score allows – requires – the performer to improvise the rhythm entirely? The result is a real-time ‘composing’ of the overall shape, pacing, highs and lows, in performance. We will hear and discuss music by Jeremy Thurlow and Couperin, in contrasting live recreations by Stephanie Childress and Dan Tidhar. TICKETS: Admission free

Monday, 22 May 2017 3.00pm–5.00pm, Lecture Recital Room, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DT

Research Masterclass Professor John Rink (University of Cambridge) works with two doctoral students specialising in the field of practice-led research – one from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the other from the Royal Northern College of Music (open to current postgraduate students by application to CMPS). This event is organised by CMPS in conjunction with the Institute of Musical Research and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. TICKETS: Admission free

Thomas Gould

A Career in the Arts: Performing and Managing

The Faculty’s Practising Performance series continues with a class for strings players (solo or chamber repertoire) taken by the dynamic and charismatic violinist Thomas Gould (1). Described as ‘one of a new generation of classical musicians who refuses to be defined by a single genre’ (The Guardian), Thomas Gould is a violinist with wide-ranging musical interests. He has fast established for himself a reputation as one of Britain’s foremost interpreters of contemporary music whilst also remaining dedicated to the core classical repertoire. TICKETS: String players wishing to participate in this exciting opportunity should contact Margaret Faultless, Director of Performance. E: mf413@cam.ac.uk. This class is open to the public

Crispin Woodhead (2), CEO – Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Not all orchestras are the same – The OAE’s catchy and much-discussed, slightly controversial marketing phrase will be the starting point for a lively afternoon learning about managing a worldrenowned orchestra and how varied a career in arts management can be. This session will also offer the chance for performers to ask Crispin for early-career advice – how is it possible for young conductors, soloists and other performers to find their place in the increasingly competitive market-place? TICKETS: Contact Margaret Faultless, Director of Performance and co-leader of OAE for further details. E: mf413@cam.ac.uk. This class is open to the public
