ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC Friday, 16 February 2018 7.30pm, West Road Concert Hall Free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm

Mortal Voices: Music by Pergolesi, Corelli and Handel Corelli Concerto Grosso, Op. 6 No. 1 in D major Handel Cantata HWV 230: Ah! Che troppo ineguali Handel Cantata HWV 82: Il duello amoroso Pergolesi Stabat Mater Christian Curnyn (1), director & harpsichord Keri Fuge, soprano Tim Mead, countertenor In a concert that will pull at the heart strings, baroque specialist Christian Curnyn directs soprano Keri Fuge and countertenor Tim Mead in some of the most sublime music of the early 18th century. Pergolesi’s beautiful Stabat Mater is his best-known work and one of the finest settings of this sorrowful song to Mary at the Crucifixion. A hidden gem in this concert is Handel’s cantata Ah! che troppo ineguali, an anguished appeal of mortal voices to Mary to extinguish every spark of warlike fury and bring peace; it is paired here with the altogether earthier cantata Il duello amoroso. Almost a miniopera, it tells the story of an ‘amorous duel’ between the shepherd Daliso and the shepherdess Amaryllis, the music perfectly capturing the drama of the story.

Saint and Sinner: Music by Haydn & Dussek Haydn Symphony No. 93 in D major Dussek Concerto for Fortepiano, Op. 49 in G minor Dussek ‘Sehnsucht der Liebe’, ‘Hoffnung’ and ‘Das Warum’ from 6 Gesänge for Voice and Fortepiano Haydn Symphony No. 94 in G major: The Surprise 3

Richard Egarr (2), director & fortepiano Daniela Lehner, mezzo soprano Music migration continued throughout the 18th century. With the arrival of composers, musicians and new instruments from Europe, London’s musical world changed. Perhaps the most famous visitor was ‘Papa’ Haydn, a devout Catholic, who penned twelve ‘London’ symphonies, two of which we hear in this concert. Jan Ladislav Dussek was another international visitor to the capital at the time. Rumoured to have been a revolutionary and seducer of princesses, he charged extortionate prices for piano lessons, then fled London when his music publishing business failed, abandoning his wife and daughter, and eventually drinking himself to death. Music Director, Richard Egarr will bring to life one of Dussek’s gems, performing his Concerto in G minor on an instrument modelled on a Broadwood fortepiano, used by Dussek and his contemporaries. CAMBRIDGE CENTRE FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE STUDIES Launched in April 2015, CMPS plays a leading international role in the field of musical performance studies. In Cambridge, the Centre supports a programme of masterclasses, workshops, Side-by-Side events, and other ‘talk-and-play events’ such as lecture-recitals and open rehearsals. These shed light on the knowledge that is created and conveyed in performance, and on how musical performance takes shape over time. During Lent Term 2018, CMPS will host public presentations, ‘Practising Performance’ events, and two ‘Meet the Composer’ sessions held with the Britten Sinfonia. CMPS will also run a reading group for young researchers featuring talks from visiting scholars. The Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies is directed by John Rink, working in collaboration with Margaret Faultless and Martin Ennis.

Cambridge Performance Studies Forum The events in this Forum are intended to present practice-led research on musical performance and to foster dialogue and debate between musicians, musicologists and others across a broad range of interests and backgrounds. Monday, 12 February 2018 Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DT Research Masterclass 3.30pm–5.30pm, Room 148, Silk Street Building Dr Mine Doğantan-Dack (Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge) works with two doctoral students specialising in the field of practice-led research. This event is open to current postgraduate students by application to CMPS.

ResearchWorks Sombering Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto 6.00pm–7.00pm, Room 148, Silk Street Building Because of the influence it had on popular culture, specifically in the form of sound tracks for various Hollywood films, Rachmaninoff’s second piano concerto is prone to associations of superficial sentimentality and even banality; and not a few performances of the work tend to validate these associations. In this talk, Dr Mine Doğantan-Dack describes the process of preparing this piece for performance with the aim of lifting off this ‘popular’ veil in order to present it as a somber, serious and deeply moving work. These events are organised by CMPS in conjunction with the Institute of Musical Research and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

2

3

There are seven fabulous Practising Performance events this term, and, by popular request, three of these are conducting masterclasses. The conducting classes, which are also open to pianists and others, provide ideal opportunities to develop repetiteur skills that are essential in the music profession. All this term’s classes are open to the public. Thursday, 25 January 2018 2.00pm–4.30pm, West Road Concert Hall

Thursday, 8 February 2018 2.00pm–4.30pm, Recital Room at the Faculty of Music

Nicholas Cleobury (1) makes his annual visit to the Faculty of Music to work on Stravinsky’s Petrushka, giving pianists the chance to play and be coached on the superb arrangement for two pianos, and conductors the opportunity to learn how to conduct this iconic work.

The internationally renowned countertenor Michael Chance (3) is making a much-awaited return to the Practising Performance series in what will be a revelatory vocal class (singers must bring an accompanist) focusing on singing, rhetorical delivery and performance.

Friday, 2 February 2018 Recital Room at the Faculty of Music

Thursday, 15 February 2018 2.00pm–4.30pm, West Road Concert Hall

Thursday, 8 March 2018 2.00pm–4.30pm, Recital Room at the Faculty of Music

Johannes Wildner Conducting Masterclass

Mary Collins’ Introduction to Baroque Dance

Johannes Wildner (5) is Professor of Conducting at the Vienna University of Music and was Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra from 2010 to 2014. He is visiting the Faculty of Music for the first time to take conductors and pianists through the well-known tongue-twister for conductors, the Schumann Piano Concerto. Places for participants are available for pianists (both as soloist and to play the orchestral parts), string quartet (pre-formed or individuals), and conductors.

The final class of the term is open to all, and no experience of dancing is necessary. Mary Collins will deliver a practical introduction to the popular dances which underpin Baroque and later repertoire (7). By recognising the features, patterns and characters of each dance form, musicians can discover ways to realise and interpret dance-based music with a fresh perspective, resulting in exciting, historically informed performances. The workshop will include a basic introduction to the steps and style of key dances.

Thursday, 1 March 2018 2.00pm–4.30pm, Recital Room at the Faculty of Music

Comfortable, unrestricted clothing is advisable, as is footwear which permits the dancers to raise the heels and move easily on the balls of the feet.

Sian Edwards Conducting Masterclass We welcome Sian Edwards (6), Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, to work on another iconic work, Mozart’s Requiem. Class participants will include a string quartet (pre-formed or individuals), a pianist, and conductors – all of whom will be required to sing when not playing/conducting. This is a remarkable opportunity to get inside the piece as a performer and/or choral conductor.

Olivier Messiaen: Messe de la Pentecôte

The sound of music and philosophy

Lawence Carden, Anna Lapwood & Dăvids Heinze, organ

University of Cambridge

Messiaen's thrilling organ mass draws on his own improvisations as well as his love of Indian and Greek rhythms and birdsong. Its five movements vividly evoke Pentecostal themes: tongues of fire, things visible and invisible, the gift of Wisdom, birds and streams, the wind of the Spirit. This colourful music is ideally suited to the magnificent Létourneau organ in Selwyn College Chapel. TICKETS: Admission free
