Looking to the future

2020 was Music for Youth’s 50th birthday year, and whilst it didn’t exactly go as planned... we had always intended to use it as an opportunity to do new things. Well, with the help of the pandemic, we certainly managed that!

You can read more about our pivot to online events during lockdown on page 02.

Tonight’s Prom is a great example of how we plan to work in the future. The live performance is just part of our offer to young people, and they can get involved in many different ways, according to their interests. As well as the live event tonight, we have:

•A digital channel with content generated largely by young people in paid roles (see page 07). They’ve been working on this for several weeks in the run-up to tonight’s event and you’ll be able to follow their work afterwards

•Young presenters, mentored by

Remel London and co-presenting with her tonight •A post Prom project with young producers, run by Lewisham Music for local musicians as well as a remote cohort from anywhere. They’ll be remixing stems from the Prom into new tracks for sharing at future events.

Music for Youth post pandemic will continue to present large scale national events where thousands of young people with a common interest in music come together. We plan to collaborate more with sector partners, like Lewisham Music, so that grass roots activities feed directly into national events. But we will go much further and involve young people directly in creating, curating and delivering live and online experiences and events that they want to see and be a part of.

As we start to move out of covid, Music for Youth’s role in championing music education and providing exciting opportunities on a national basis for young people to come together has never been more important.
