The PSO opens its 27th season with two musical portraits that reflect the stark contrasts of human experience. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op 93 is both a musical depiction of the brutal tyranny and oppression experienced under Stalin and a portrait of the people who were overshadowed by him, even in death. Alternatively, Copland’s Lincoln Portrait is a work of admiration and a celebration of the great emancipator. Written for orchestra and narrator, the piece incorporates Lincoln’s own words and offers the listener a unique perspective on our country’s aspirations.

Chadwick Stokes is an accomplished musician and songwriter who grew up on a small farm outside of Boston. A songwriter since early adolescence, his many projects have woven together music, art, history and activism. From Dispatch, which he started in his early 20s; to his politically driven band, State Radio; to his nascent solo project, Chadwick Stokes and the Pintos, Chad has committed himself to using music as a vehicle for social and political change.
1972 is Chadwick’s in-progress rock opera about a young pregnant woman fleeing an abusive relationship who hops trains on her way west to obtain an illegal abortion. On her journey she bands together with others who’ve also been forced to the margins of society, and finds hope in her unconventional but deeply bonded chosen family.

One of this year’s Music Hall Emerging Artist Grant Winners, folk singer-songwriter Halley Neal returns to Portsmouth for a headlining show. Joined by Joe Everett and Devon Gardner on upright bass and fiddle, her lyrical Americana songs are met with soaring vocals and an upbeat bluegrass-inspired instrumentation. Halley has been blazing the folk trail over the last 2 years, performing at festivals such as: Kerrville Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and recently she was named the winner of SolarFest’s Singer-Songwriter Showcase. Halley released her most recent record Beautiful and Blue to critical acclaim on September 30, 2022.

Dreadnaught’s eclectic blend of rock, jazz, and experimental music has been a hallmark of the seacoast scene for nearly 30 years – 18 of them as house band for The Music Hall’s Writers on a New England Stage series. This evening they will be taking it back to the classics, as they perform live and in full, their 2001 album The American Standard.
Founded in 1996, Dreadnaught is a collective of seasoned musicians featuring Justin Walton on guitar, Bob Lord on the bass, and Rick Habib on the drum kit. The band’s live performances are nothing short of electrifying.
