EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT A MUSIC IN THE ROUND CONCERT

There is no dress code, no big stage to keep the performers at a distance, nothing you need to know about the music in advance. Just outstanding musicians, introducing and performing a rich variety of exciting, moving and thoughtprovoking classical chamber music.

At the heart of each concert series is Ensemble 360: the region’s largest resident professional classical music ensemble, comprising eleven world-class musicians. Together with guest artists, they present inspiring concerts in the intimate setting of the Crucible Studio Theatre, where the audience is only ever a few feet away from the performers.

“Sheffield has something that no other city has got, Music in the Round ….and the best and most talented musicians in the UK!” An audience member

But my excitement is fuelled by my discussions with musicians, scholars, educators and, not least, audience members who speak so passionately about their enthusiasms and experiences. Empowered by these fascinating dialogues, I have confidence that we have lined up wonderful music presented by captivating musicians. I look forward immensely to hearing Angela Hewitt and Alina Ibragimova playing Bach. Ensemble 360 presents another wonderful portfolio of programmes and I am especially thrilled that their lunchtime

concerts feature two instruments that rarely get their turn in the spotlight: the viola and the double bass. The Leonore Trio continue their Beethoven series – already in the category of ‘essential listening’ – and you can hear two rising star string quartets, the award-winning Van Kuijk Quartet and our very own Marmen Quartet. And as ever, there is a great programme of music for families and youngsters. Finally I would like to point you in the direction of two great wordsmiths. Actor Richard Wilson and singer Roderick Williams may use their voices in different ways, but both are masters in their field at commanding with the power of their storytelling. We strongly advise booking early for their appearances this Autumn! Angus Smith, Artistic Director

BBC Music Magazine on Coleridge-Taylor’s Piano Quintet

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was considered by his teacher Charles Villiers Stanford to be one of his two most outstanding students, a fine accolade when it is considered that his other pupils included Bliss, Bridge, Holst, Ireland and Vaughan Williams. The illegitimate son of a doctor from Sierra Leone and an English woman, Coleridge-Taylor’s reputation today rests on his grand oratorio Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, a work that earned him invitations to the USA for concerts and a reception at the White House, yet it is unrepresentative of the range of his skills.

Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt’s globe-trotting schedule regularly takes her from such prestigious venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House to festivals in Lucerne, Verbier, Prague and the BBC Proms. Her repertoire embraces the works of a diverse range of composers, including Schumann, Granados and Debussy, and her performances have earned her a Royal Philharmonic Society Award and the accolade of Gramophone magazine Artist of the Year.

His uplifting chamber music displays the inspiration provided by his hero, Dvořák, and the breadth of his compositional ambition led New York’s orchestral musicians to celebrate him as “the African Mahler”.

Her extraordinary affinity for the keyboard works of J.S. Bach makes this Crucible Studio recital an exceptionally exciting prospect. The varied programme promises to surprise and delight with the endless imagination and invention of the supreme master of bewitching counterpoint.

“Hewitt’s playing radiates joy, wit and profound understanding”

HAYDN String Quartet in B flat Op.76 No.4 Sunrise RAVEL String Quartet in F BEETHOVEN String Quartet in E flat Op.127 The young Van Kuijk Quartet from France have been enjoying an impressive rise to international prominence. Following successes in Germany, Austria, Norway and Switzerland, the Quartet triumphed at the 2015 Wigmore Hall String Quartet competition in London, not only taking the overall First Prize but also winning the ‘Best Beethoven’ and the ‘Best Haydn’ prizes.

“Trish Clowes is a fiercely talented jazz saxophonist” The Telegraph

TRISH CLOWES Saxophone GARETH WILLIAMS Piano CALUM GOURLAY Bass MARTIN FRANCE Drums Both exceptional musicians, Gareth and Trish have worked together a few times in the last year or so, and recently decided to create a more formal collaboration in the “Glow Quartet” together with Calum Gourlay on bass and Martin France on drums. The idea behind the band is to bring generations and styles of musicians/music together, playing arrangements of standards plus originals by the two of them. As Gareth describes it, “…it’s an interactive band, taking risks, and taking the good stuff from both more traditional improvised music and contemporary ideas”.

Their beautifully balanced programme for Music in the Round not only gives us a chance to hear what makes their interpretations of Beethoven and Haydn stand out so impressively, but also showcases the irresistible Gallic charm of their compatriot Maurice Ravel’s beguiling string quartet.

HAYDN String Quartet in B flat Op.50 No.1 GLASS String Quartet No.3 Mishima BEETHOVEN String Quartet in A minor Op.132

An evening of engaging melodies and luxurious harmonies.

Johannes Marmen of the Marmen Quartet writes:

Haydn’s enchanting piano trios stand out in comparison with trios by his contemporaries, not only for their freshness and zest, but because of an unusual emphasis on the piano that requires sensitive accommodation from the string players. The folk influences of the final movement’s ‘Gypsy’ Rondo are mirrored in Brahms’ Horn Trio, a work in which the composer stated a preference for an old-fashioned ‘Waldhorn’ (hunting horn) to be used precisely to make a connection with traditional music.

“We’re very excited to present this programme which we feel really reflects our ethos.

“Haydn’s Op.50 No.1 is just another Haydn quartet...which means it’s absolutely fantastic in every single way! “Philip Glass’ Third Quartet was originally written for the soundtrack to Paul Schrader’s film Mishima. The movements correspond to different periods in the life of Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, but each one contains tremendous identity and atmosphere as an independent work. “Beethoven’s Op.132 not only represents a cornerstone in music history, but it also marks a pivotal moment in the life of every musician who embarks on the journey of playing it. SCHUBERT Die Winterreise

7:45pm . Cast, Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3BU

For his first recital in his series presenting all three of Schubert’s great song cycles, Roddy Williams will be joined by pianist Christopher Glynn to sing Die Winterreise. It has all the ingredients of being a landmark occasion: one of the finest song recitalists in the world singing possibly the greatest sequence of songs ever to be composed, in his first fulllength concert as Singer-in-Residence at Music in the Round!

WINTER JOURNEY RODERICK WILLIAMS Baritone CHRISTOPHER GLYNN Piano

Schubert described Die Winterreise to a friend as “a cycle of terrifying songs” that “please me more than all the rest, and in time they will please you too”. Wilhelm Müller’s poems depict a solitary individual amid nature at its cruellest and coldest: it’s a vision of numbing intensity expressed in music that is by turns bold and desolate. The singer’s journey proceeds relentlessly towards desolation, alleviated only by shards of piercing beauty along the way that merely highlight the descent into a personal hell.

The fascination that Mozart held for the clarinet, and which inspired him to write an inspiring concerto and a quintet featuring the instrument in his later years, can be attributed to his close friendship with the virtuoso player Anton Stadler. One contemporary credited Stadler with “so soft and so lovely a tone that nobody who has a heart can resist it”. Schumann’s Fantasiestücke continue Mozart’s lyricism in a compact suite with contrasting movements, and the clarinet also features in this concert’s world premiere. Dani Howard is a graduate of the Royal College of Music and her work has already been performed worldwide; she is currently composing new pieces for performance in California and New York in Autumn 2016. Benjamin Britten’s Lachrymae stands out as one of the most compelling compositions of the 20th century for any string instrument. Clearly it was a piece of great importance to the composer – he suspended writing the opera Billy Budd to focus entirely on this work – and is built upon a structure of not one, but two beautiful songs by John Dowland, If My Complaints Could Passions Move and Flow My Tears. The recital also features movements from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet in a transcription by the renowned Russian violist Vadim Vasilyevich Borisovsky and sanctioned by the composer himself. The grand finale is Franck’s passionate and sometimes turbulent Sonata in A, a suitable climax to a programme conceived with highly-charged emotional music from beginning to end. Saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and pianist Nikki Iles are iconic figures on the UK jazz scene, composing and playing in their own distinctive contemporary styles. However despite a long-standing musical friendship and frequent collaborations, it has been almost 20 years since Stan and Nikki recorded their first album Treasure Trove together. Their latest offering, Stardust, celebrates a shared love of songs, as well as featuring an original composition from each, and was released to great acclaim in late 2015.

SCHUBERT Quartettsatz in C minor D.703 BRAHMS Piano Quintet in F minor Op.34 BRAHMS Serenade in D Op.11 for chamber ensemble

Following Benjamin Nabarro and Tim Horton’s much talked about, intense rendition of Beethoven’s monumental Kreutzer Sonata at this year’s May Festival, the pair return to the Studio to give a repeat performance of this great work. Beethoven originally fondly dedicated it to the violinist George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower, “great fool and mulatto composer”, but the two men fell out and Beethoven instead honoured another violinist, Rodolphe Kreutzer.

A veteran of the UK jazz scene, Stan Sulzmann has a rich and varied career that has included playing with musicians as diverse as Kenny Wheeler, Larry Grenadier and Gwilym Simcock, as well as a prolific output as band leader. Nikki Iles is a real favourite of Sheffield Jazz audiences and was described by John Fordham (The Guardian) as “one of the most refreshing figures to have emerged in the UK scene in recent times”.

The three Opus 1 piano trios that Beethoven wrote for Prince Lichnowsky were warmly welcomed by Haydn, yet he advised against the third trio being published. An angry Beethoven attributed this to jealousy, yet Haydn believed that the public would not understand the strong contrasts and harmonic innovations. This idea of a ‘work ahead of its time’ was destined to become a common feature of Beethoven’s composing career.

Ten players from Ensemble 360 take to the stage to present Brahms’s Serenade, an early masterpiece regarded by many observers as an embryonic symphony. They also perform Schubert’s Quartettsatz. This single-movement composition, written in 1820 and of the highest quality, was certainly intended to be part of a complete quartet but it failed to progress beyond the opening bars of the slow movement. Brahms’ Piano Quintet also had a complex evolution; on the advice of the violinist Joseph Joachim the original string quintet was rearranged for piano duet, and it only finally became a piano quintet at the suggestion of Clara Schumann. In the words of one contemporary, the quintet is “beautiful beyond measure…a masterpiece of chamber music”. Tickets* £19 / £13 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s

7.15pm – 9pm . St Marie’s Cathedral

Following her memorable sell-out Music in the Round concert last Autumn with the Chiaroscuro Quartet, we are delighted to welcome violinist Alina Ibragimova back to Sheffield for a recital that presents transfixing and ecstatic music written for a single performer.

Ensemble 360’s double bass player, Laurène Durantel, has forged an international reputation as an outstanding player and a passionate advocate for her instrument. As a soloist she not only plays parts written for double bass but also dares to perform any other piece she wants but always with as much care to the original as possible. When taking on parts originally meant for cello, no transposing takes place and she plays the part exactly as written. The singing quality that she achieves with her playing casts new light on her chosen repertoire.

The Belgian violin virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe, who performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto under the baton of Sir Henry Wood in Sheffield in 1902, sketched out his 6 sonatas in a mere 24 hours following a realisation that nobody in nearly 200 years had attempted to follow Bach’s example of writing for unaccompanied violin. Ysaÿe was not presuming to try to surpass or even match Bach, but he did consider that with the evolution of music and technique he might say something new in this rare genre.

In this engaging recital featuring masterpieces by Biber and Beethoven, Laurène will also reveal another facet of her talents when she joins Tim Horton at the piano for an energetic performance of Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

“Alina Ibragimova is a superb advocate [for Ysaÿe’s Sonatas]; her performances brim with lyricism and wit”

The juxtaposition of Bach and Ysaÿe’s profound music promises an evening of immense expressivity and radiance. Tickets* £19 / £13 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s
