WELCOME Welcome to the Sheffield Chamber Music Festival.

BEETHOVEN AND THE NATURAL WORLD

It is with the greatest pleasure that we invite you to share in a nine-day festival packed with wonderful music. We aim to provide concerts that are the equal of any chamber music events throughout the world, and the fact that we can aspire to this is down to the extraordinary talents of our resident and visiting musicians.

This year we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven and have chosen to do so against the background of what for him was always an intensely important subject – Nature. He would find solace and inspiration from long walks outdoors, even at the very bleakest of times: “How glad I am to be able to roam in wood and thicket, among the trees and flowers and rocks. No one can love the country as I do. … In the country every tree seems to speak to me, saying, ‘Holy! Holy!’ In the woods there is enchantment which expresses all things!” In the following pages you will be able to read about the selection of great works by Beethoven that can be heard in the festival, alongside music by other composers he knew or influenced, and with wonderful extra works that relate to nature. Ensemble 360 launches the Festival with a selection of Beethoven’s early chamber music that displays his originality and the full range of his skills. The third of Beethoven’s earliest set of quartets is regarded as one of his most gentle, while his vivacious Septet, premiered in 1800 together with the First Symphony, achieved rapid and enduring popularity and is still hugely enjoyed by players and audiences alike today.

‘Rising Star’ (BBC Music Magazine) and recipient of numerous awards, mezzosoprano Anna Huntley joins Ensemble 360 for an evening of chamber music and song. Turbulence and beauty mingle in this dramatic programme. Schubert’s Auf dem Strom (On the River) is dominated by thoughts of Beethoven, including a quote from the Eroica Symphony in tribute to the great man. Respighi’s gloriously expressive Il Tramonto is a setting of Shelley’s romantic love story The Sunset. Despite its name, the Serioso Quartet is impetuous, ending with some of the swiftest and most exhilarating music ever written for string quartet.

Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1993, Gavin Bryars’ Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a deeply powerful and haunting improvisation on a 1971 recording of a homeless man singing on the streets of London, which still has resonance and relevance today. The predicament and frailty of the elderly man seems utterly at odds with his nobility and simple faith, and Bryars composed the piece as his tribute to the man’s incredible spirit and optimism. Join Ensemble 360 for a musical dawn chorus. This unique performance will begin just prior to sunrise and, as light begins to flood the magnificent Samuel Worth Chapel, music will accompany the transition from night to day. Enjoy coffee and a croissant after the concert as the surrounding woodland comes alive with birdsong, before heading off on a guided wildlife and history walk in the grounds of this fascinating and beautiful pocket of urban wilderness. There are limited tickets for this event. Early booking is recommended.

ENSEMBLE 360 CHERUBINI Two Sonatas for horn and strings BEETHOVEN String Quartet in F Op.59 No.1 Razumovsky At the height of his career Luigi Cherubini was the toast of Parisian society, and was considered by Beethoven to be the greatest living composer, but with the advent of the French Revolution his reputation faded. His instinct for a vocal line shines through in these two sonatas, with florid writing that shows off the singing qualities of the horn. Beethoven’s Quartet in F is an expansive work, described as blending the “majesty and energy of the Eroica Symphony with the serenity of the Violin Concerto”.

PAUL LEWIS piano BEETHOVEN Sonata in E flat Op.27 No.1 Sonata in C sharp minor Op.27 No.2 Moonlight 33 Variations in C on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli Op.120 The multi-award-winning pianist Paul Lewis performs some of Beethoven’s finest writing for solo piano. The Moonlight Sonata is one of the most famous and best-loved piano pieces ever written, regularly appearing in the top 20 of Classic FM’s Hall of Fame. The magisterial Diabelli Variations is considered by many to be one of the greatest ever achievements in solo piano writing. The work embraces humour, allusion and parody as each variation displays a distinct personality, while retaining coherence across its ambitious structure. Early booking is recommended.

Our first rush-hour concert of this Festival features Mozart’s light-hearted Horn Quintet, with a sweet, lyrical slow movement and showpiece finale. Liszt’s Tristia was inspired by a 19th century French novel about the life of a young man seeking spiritual peace and harmony as he wanders through the beautiful landscape of a Swiss valley. Moving from poignant reflection to a radiant declaration of optimism, it’s the perfect musical pick-meup for the end of the working day.

Beethoven’s only string quintet has been nicknamed ‘The Storm’ on account of explosive outbursts that punctuate the otherwise serene atmosphere of the final movement. Beethoven’s close friend, Hummel, was hugely admired in the Viennese musical world as a pianist and improviser, and it was this exuberant Septet that cemented his reputation as a composer of the highest order.

The Hungarian influence is also apparent in Beethoven’s moody C minor quartet. Beethoven’s friend, Ries, was first and foremost celebrated as a virtuoso pianist, which is immediately apparent on hearing his florid Grand Octet, a chamber-scale piano concerto in all but name.

Fay returns to the performing arena this May with the launch of her new solo album. Looking at traditional stories involving the otherworld of fairies, ghosts and the animal kingdom, the new project explores our emotional responses to the space between their realm and our own, working through the imagination to make things real.

ENSEMBLE 360 CRUSELL Divertimento in C for oboe and string quartet MENDELSSOHN Piano Quartet in B minor Op.3 Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Quartet in B minor is compelling evidence of the young composer’s precocious talents. Dedicated to the poet Goethe, this remarkable piece was completed in 1825 when Mendelssohn was just 15. Bernhard Crusell has been described as “the outstanding Finnish composer before Sibelius”. He was a contemporary of Beethoven, and this charming Divertimento demonstrates his lyrical talents.

ENSEMBLE 360 SCHUBERT Introduction and Variations on Trockne Blumen D802 for flute and piano BEETHOVEN Serenade in D Op.25 for flute, violin and viola BRAHMS Piano Quartet in G minor Op.25 Trockne Blumen (Faded Flowers) is one of the songs in Schubert’s song-cycle Die Schöne Müllerin, and these Variations are based on the same melody. A brilliant tour de force, they require virtuosity from both flute and piano. Beethoven’s Serenade is a charming piece, while Brahms demonstrates in his grand G minor Piano Quartet that he, like Haydn and Beethoven before him, was captivated by traditional folk music.

Speakers PETER HILL, TOM McKINNEY, LAURENCE ROSE Pianist and writer Peter Hill considers the influence of birdsong on twentieth-century composers, demonstrating how birdsong was used to not only present a mirror to human emotion, but also how the actual songs birds sing were often closely woven into pieces. Peter will play a selection of solo piano pieces, including Oiseaux tristes by Ravel and La Colombe, La chouette hulotte and L’Alouette lulu by Messiaen, plus there will be a rare chance to hear some of the field recordings that Messiaen made of birdsong prior to creating his piano transcriptions of these uplifting sounds. Peter will be joined by conservationist, naturalist, composer and author Laurence Rose (RSPB), and BBC Radio 3’s Tom McKinney, who is not only Music in the Round’s Programme Manager but also a lifelong obsessive with all things ornithological.

York Bowen was a contemporary of Elgar and a celebrated concert pianist, and his enchanting Oboe Sonata is permeated by cheerful, expressive melodies and jazz-infused harmonies and rhythms. Beethoven’s early E flat Piano Sonata is upbeat and jaunty with a beautiful slow movement full of expression.

Introduced by PETER HILL BEETHOVEN String Quartet in E flat Op.127 BEETHOVEN String Quartet in C sharp minor Op.131 Beethoven’s late quartets represent the pinnacle of classical chamber music and are described by Robert Schumann as “standing on the boundary of all that has been attained by human art and imagination”. The Op.127 Quartet in E flat is instantly approachable and features a beautiful set of variations that are soothing and mysterious. The Quartet in C sharp minor, said to be the composer’s own favourite, is an intriguing work that illustrates perfectly why Beethoven stands out from his contemporaries.

Beethoven’s Piano Quartet, with its virtuosic keyboard part, is almost a miniature chamber piano concerto and lovers of his piano sonatas and concertos will find something of both in this sparkling work.

Saint-Saëns tantalises with distinctive, lively and imaginative pieces and, for our Festival finale, Ensemble 360 is joined by pianist Peter Hill for one of the composer’s most famous and joyous works. Carnival of the Animals features vivid and witty representations of the animal kingdom, from the graceful swan to a royal lion, wild donkeys, pianists(!) and many more.

Crucible Corner offers a relaxed drink after work, lunch with family and friends or an evening dining experience. We generally recommend our lunchtime, rush-hour and evening concerts for children age 7+.
