In celebration of Ensemble 360’s new CD featuring works by Howard Skempton, this concert includes two pieces revised in 2018 especially for chamber ensemble. These are presented together with Beethoven’s To the distant beloved, often regarded as the first ever song-cycle, and Vaughan Williams’s
beautifully elegiac On Wenlock Edge. The composer’s settings of A.E. Houseman’s Shropshire Lad poems are sung by James Gilchrist, praised by The Times as an interpreter of English song who is “in a class by himself”.

An evening of music that takes us to the extremes of Beethoven’s character. The Grosse Fuge is celebrated for its dramatic nature – Stravinsky declared it to be “an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever” – while the early Quartet in G is rich in wit and humour. These works are complemented by Shostakovich’s popular Quintet, featuring its own remarkable fugue, and a short new string quartet by outstanding young composer Carmen Ho.
This is the second concert in our Beethoven 250 series, a celebration of the composer’s anniversary. Performances by Ensemble 360 will include all 16 of his monumental quartets alongside many of his other chamber works; the series continues through 2020 and into spring 2021.

A joyful showcase of Beethoven and more from the wind players of Ensemble 360. Beethoven’s Quintet for piano and wind is one of the great pieces in the wind repertoire, hugely enjoyable to both listen to and play. Writer of numerous wind quintets, Danzi’s knowledge of the instruments shines through in his melodic writing. Inspired by Beethoven’s Quintet, Louise Farrenc’s Sextet adds the flute and is set in the style of a chamber concerto for piano and wind. A brilliant 19th century composer, she is now starting to achieve the recognition her outstanding music deserves.

BEETHOVEN Rondino in E flat WoO25 Sextet in E flat Op.71 Octet in E flat Op.103 Music for wind instruments (Harmoniemusik) was regularly composed in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Beethoven’s Sextet and Octet are two of the finest examples of this genre. The Sextet was reviewed at its premiere as “distinguished by fine melodies and a wealth of new and surprising ideas”, and the Octet is just as lyrical. The Rondino is notable for featuring the horns as melodic instruments, with a memorable duet that closes this enjoyable work.

BEETHOVEN Symphony No.5 Come and play along with members of Ensemble 360 and one of Sheffield’s leading orchestras, Hallam Sinfonia! Spend an afternoon with these amazing, friendly musicians, playing through the first movement of Beethoven’s greatest symphony, No. 5 (da-da-da-DUUUUMMM).
We have parts for every standard, whether you scraped through Grade I or were a concert soloist at the age of 12. As long as you have some experience of playing with others as part of a large group, you are really welcome! The parts are specially adapted by Andrew J. Smith (BBC Ten Pieces), so you can select the one you feel most comfortable playing. All you need is a working instrument and piles of enthusiasm – just come along and give it a go!
The afternoon will culminate in an informal performance for an audience of friends and family. Participants and audience members will be invited to join in with the final movement of the symphony too! BEETHOVEN Sonata in E Op.109 Sonata in A flat Op.110 Sonata in C minor Op.111 The last of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, these three sublime pieces were commissioned by Beethoven’s publisher almost 200 years ago, in April 1820. They form a trio of beautifully balanced and contrasting works that are best heard as a set, with each sonata exploring a wide range of technique and emotion, from extreme delicacy to muscular firepower. Steven Osborne is widely celebrated as a thrilling performer. His 2019 recording of these Beethoven Sonatas was acclaimed as among his finest and this recital promises to be an electrifying experience. Randall has performed as a soloist with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and The Cleveland, and we are delighted to showcase this duo ahead of their debut at London’s Wigmore Hall later in the month. They perform Strauss’s popular early sonata and William Grant Still’s Suite (1943), an engaging work inspired by the composer’s Afro-American heritage. YCAT supports exceptional young musicians and has helped launch the careers of Joanna MacGregor, Ian Bostridge and Ensemble 360’s Amy Harman, among many others. Randall is YCAT’s inaugural Robey Artist, in partnership with London Music Masters.

Damascus-born Maya Youssef is hailed as ‘the queen of the qanun’, a traditional Syrian 78-stringed plucked zither. Based on Arabic musical traditions, her innovative sound has echoes of everything from jazz to flamenco, infused with warmth, humour and optimism. She describes her debut album Syrian Dreams as her “personal journey through six years of
war in Syria. I see the act of playing music as the opposite of death; it is a life- and hope-affirming act.” Maya has performed widely around the world, including at the BBC Proms, and is the winner of Arts Council England’s Exceptional Talent award and Songlines’ Newcomer Music Award 2018.

Presented in partnership with Concerteenies, as part of our Beethoven 250 weekend celebrations. Please note: because each session is specifically designed for the ages specified, we aren’t able to accommodate older siblings within the 10.15am session, but siblings of all ages are welcome at the 11.30am session. Please specify which area you wish to sit in when booking. Talks and Q&As: All pre-concert talks are free to concert ticket holders but please request a separate ticket for talks at the box office. A separate ticket is not required for post-concert Q&As. Drinks: You may take drinks purchased from the Crucible bars into our concerts in plastic glasses which can be provided by Sheffield Theatres staff. Bags and coats: Sheffield Theatres Cloakroom will be open, but please don't bring any suitcases or large holdalls.* Small handbags (no bigger than A3 size, 300mm x 420mm) are permitted to be taken into the auditorium. All bags brought into the Crucible, or stored in the Cloakroom will be security searched.
