GOULD PIANO TRIO SCHUBERT Piano Trio in B flat D.898 Piano Trio in E flat D.929 Friday 27 January 7.15pm – 9.10pm Crucible Studio Theatre £19 £13 Disabled & Unemployed £5 Students & Under 35s 06
It’s a great pleasure to welcome the Gould Piano Trio back to Sheffield to play two wonderful trios by Schubert. Robert Schumann gave a thought-provoking summary of these great pieces: the Trio in B flat is ‘passive, lyrical and feminine’, while the Trio in E flat is ’spirited, masculine and dramatic’. We invite you to judge if he was right. “What they produce, after playing for 20 years together, is simply extraordinary.” Washington Post

ENSEMBLE 360 SIBELIUS En Saga Op.9 for septet STRAUSS Till Eulenspiegel einmal anders! (arr. Franz Hasenöhrl) MARTINU Nonet LUTOSŁAWSKI Dance Preludes SPOHR Nonet Ensemble 360’s season opens with a programme of sparkling music and extreme virtuosity. It was En Saga that first propelled Sibelius into the public limelight, and Martinu and Lutosławski bring vibrant dance music to the party. Richard Strauss adds to the fun with his humorous depiction of the medieval prankster Till Eulenspiegel. In all, this programme can be summed up by one noblewoman’s description of Spohr’s Nonet – ‘insane’!

RODERICK WILLIAMS & IAIN BURNSIDE RODERICK WILLIAMS Baritone IAIN BURNSIDE Piano SCHUBERT Die Schöne Müllerin It begins so well. A happy young wanderer falls madly in love with the daughter of a miller, only to be crushed by her rejection and her encouragement of a rival suitor. The end is inevitable. Schubert’s timeless exploration of the highs and lows of love ranks as a supreme artistic achievement. With Roderick Williams’ peerless poetic delivery, this performance promises to be an electrifying experience. The Schubert Ensemble performs two contrasting works written either side of the First World War. Elgar’s Quintet shifts from thoughtful, almost introverted music to massive, passionate outbursts, while Dohnányi’s work displays rich, glowing colours that grip the listener from start to finish. The concert opens with one of the Ensemble’s acclaimed ‘Behind the Notes’ introductions using live demonstrations to strip down the music and reveal the inner workings of Dohnányi’s Piano Quintet.

The Maxwell Quartet from Scotland has been hailed as ‘brilliantly fresh, unexpected and exhilarating’. Frank Bridge’s serene Idylls and an enchanting Mozart quartet frame the programme’s feature work, Sally Beamish’s Reed Stanzas. This beautiful piece was written on the Hebridean island of Harris and is inspired by Celtic fiddle playing, reed beds and the persistent cries of the lapwing.
