Support your record shop: RECORD STORE DAY Saturday 20th April Record Store Day came into being in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture. The UK followed suit and 2013 will see the sixth celebration of the UK’s unique independent sector. This is the one-day that all of the independently owned record shops come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, meet & greets with artists, DJ’s, in store quizzes and many other events. Watch an interview and performance excerpts of Tom Odell performing "Can't Pretend" live for the Record Store Day 2013 Launch Event at Rough Trade East in London - link: http://youtu.be/9SgvosrMD3E We’ve listed on page 14 many of the Scottish independent record shops and given a flavour of planned special events – apologies for any that we’ve missed – so get down to your local store on the 20th, but more importantly make that store a best friend that you visit on a regular basis!

New York - 6 days - 6 gigs Big Apple Award winners have an amazing trip Scottish alternative hip-hop act Stanley Odd, winners of the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy In Scotland Big Apple Award, have wrapped up their six gigs in six days schedule of live events in New York City at the internationally renowned Bowery Ballroom supporting fellow Scots, The View, as part of Scotland Week 2013. Stanley Odd competed among a wealth of emerging Scottish music talents, for the chance to play live at the famous Bowery Ballroom (NYC) as part of the Creative Scotland sponsored Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy In Scotland's Big Apple Award. Since winning the accolade, the group have gone on to secure not one but six gigs in their six-day trip to NYC from 3-8 April; with fans having flown in to New York from mainland Europe, Australia and parts of America to see the award winners perform live. This closing gig promised to be something spectacular due to the amazing support and platform that NRMTiS Big Apple Award provides along with the support of the team at Creative Scotland. Owing to the fantastic Big Apple Award opportunity, Stanley Odd were invited to join The View on their US tour, playing a further two dates at some of the USA's most renowned music venues. The additional tour dates have seen Stanley Odd play to audiences at Brighton Music Hall in Boston on 5 April, Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on 6 April, as well as their main prize of playing at Bowery Ballroom in New York on 7 April. In addition to their further dates supporting The View, Stanley Odd were asked to perform as part of the Caledonia Collective featuring the eclectic talents of three Scottish music acts. The Caledonia Collective gig was presented by Creative Scotland and CPL, and supported by the Scottish Government. The showcase gig took place at the intimate Studio at Webster Hall on 6 April. The Studio, previously graced by British pop-rock royalty Mumford and Sons and Florence and The Machine, became home to the Scots for the night with talent, energy and enthusiasm flowing from Stanley Odd, folk singer Rachel Sermanni (with Louis Abbott from folkpop band Admiral Fallow) and folk band Breabach. The Scots emerged victorious, with the audience enthralled by the acts enigmatic performances. Following Stanley Odd's brilliant performance at Webster Hall, the band then went on to perform live with Dundee indie rockers The View, supporting them in their performance at Bowery Ballroom, the 1929 construction, which still features some of the buildings original features including mahogany lined VIP rooms, has over the years held audiences captive with celebrated acts from Metallica to Coldplay to Kings of Leon and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Performing on the stage where such greats have performed was a momentous occasion for the musicians as they flew the flag for Scotland and secured Scottish music a place in the long-standing legacy of the venue for all time.

Solareye, Stanley Odd's MC said: "We are proud to be in NYC representing Scottish Music at Scotland Week 2013. All our shows have been brilliant and we've been thrilled with the response we have received. We are so grateful to have been given this amazing opportunity by Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland Big Apple Awards, and of course, to everyone that has been involved in Scotland Week. Our performance tonight with The View is very exciting - we can't wait to get on the stage at Bowery!" Scotland Week 2013 is built around the Tartan Day celebrations in the USA and Canada on April 6. EASTER STREET : “We’re a band. We play rock and roll music” an MNS band profile by Melanie Miller

“We’re a band. We play rock and roll music” is a pretty apt description to sum up Duns trio Easter Street who are back with their second album, “Fire Together / Wire Together”, due for release at the start of May. With their musical influences and tastes ranging from The Black Keys and Neil Young to Eric Clapton and Radiohead, the album will undoubtedly make for some interesting listening.

Album launch 4 May : Duns

The group came to life after native Canadian Derek Huffman (singer/guitarist) and Duns lad Daniel Dishington (drummer) joined forces with Murray Warnock (bassist) and christened themselves Easter Street, the name of the street in Duns, Berwickshire, where their initial jamming sessions and consequence birth as a band occurred in Murray’s house. Their history began in 2011 when the guys self-recorded and produced their first seven song EP “Paved With Good Intentions”. After releasing it for free online, they played their first show to a sellout crowd in April 2011 and their live presence has only gone from strength to strength. 2012 saw the creation and success of their debut album “Cause and Effect” which led to gigs in Glasgow, various festivals across the Scottish Borders and Northumberland as well as several charity events. Since then, the band have certainly gone a long way to honour their Scottish Borders roots, in particular, the support and motivation given to them by their staunch bunch of Duns fans. Fitting then that last year their debut album was launched in the town that not only gave them inspiration for their band name but has loyally backed them all the way on their path to world domination. Easter Street’s affection for Duns has certainly had some impact on their first album; the song “From the Whip to the Swan” is about a night out in Duns with many of the guy’s experiences and observations from around the town featuring in their music. In particular, singer and guitarist Derek feels that living in the Scottish Borders has certainly influenced his take on the band’s music. Hailing from Canada has provided him with a fresh perspective on the beauty and history of the local area. To rally further interest to their already buzzing reputation around the Lothian’s and Borders the band decided to run a competition in October 2012 to celebrate the official launch of their music video for “Parent’s Attic”, produced by local company 80:Eight Recording and Design. One lucky winner would see their house/garage/garden play host to the video release show, a personal rock and roll spectacle! However, after such an overwhelming response the band decided to choose a handful of entries and after the main event, embarked on a mini tour of the local area playing private shows for several different fans. So, with 2012 ending in spectacular fashion for Easter Street, what does 2013 and their new album have to offer? Frontman Derek definitely feels that “Fire Together/Wire Together” promotes a more mature and unified vibe and is very much an honest rock and roll album. The guys have already released a tempting tit bit of what’s in store in the form of music video “Let me Walk You Home” recorded live from the loft. So, if your keen to rock your socks off, head over to the White Swan function room in Duns on Saturday 4th May and join in the fun for the official album launch, rumour has it accordions and bagpipes will be involved! http://facebook.com/easterstreet http://twitter.com/easterstreet www.easterstreet.com

THE INCREDIBLE SOUND OF STAN KENTON presented by Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) directed by Tommy Smith

Throughout the fabulous ‘40’s and well into the 1950’s the world was swinging, living and loving to the gigantic sounds of the Big Bands. Few were adored more than the large orchestra led by influential composer, arranger and pianist Stan Kenton (1911-1979). Tommy Smith once more leads The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra through the jazz hall of fame in a series of Scottish concert dates that promise to re-ignite the hottest music of the post war era and beyond. Stan Kenton’s forty-year career as a bandleader began with his Artistry in Rhythm Orchestra in 1941 and it eventually made him a popular figure. Hit tunes such as Eager Beaver, Tampico and Intermission Riff featured his brash, brassy trademark sound and further consolidated his growing fame. But it was The Peanut Vendor in 1947 that made him a household name on both sides of the Atlantic. This infectious piece of danceable Latin Jazz proved to be his enduring signature tune, and its bright good natured appeal still speaks to the young and the young at heart alike. Kenton consistently used sassy Afro-Cuban stylings and European Classicism in his vast repertoire but by the late 1950’s he had begun to explore more modernist, avantgarde themes. He later returned to his familiar swing roots before becoming a leading jazz educator. Leading Scottish saxophonist, composer and educator Tommy Smith directs the acclaimed SNJO in a celebration of Stan Kenton’s best known and most riotously expressive originals alongside singular readings of standards such as Love For Sale and Fascinating Rhythm. Tommy Smith founded the multi award-winning SNJO in 1995 and it is currently the UK’s foremost jazz orchestra. Its members include the brightest and best of jazz talent living and working in Scotland today. GIGnotes:
