Scottish Album of Year Award Longlist Announced Winning artist set to receive £20,000 The Scottish Music Industry Association ‘Regenerating Europe (SMIA) has announced the longlist of Through Music' twenty albums for the 2013 Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award. The albums on the list represent a dazzling range of genres and musical styles highlighting, once again, the extraordinary depth of talent being produced in Scotland. The winner will be chosen from a shortlist of ten albums at an award ceremony held in Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom on Thursday, 20 June. The winning album will once again receive a first prize of £20,000 with the nine other shortlisted titles picking up £1,000 each. All ten shortlisted albums will also receive an exclusive artwork created by the winner of this year’s SAY Art Commission: a prize fund of £20,000 courtesy of Creative Scotland and contested by eight outstanding graduates from Scotland’s four principal art schools. Drawing upon the nominations of 100 individuals and organisations from across the arts and Scotland’s music industry, the twenty highest scoring albums, from Scottish artists who released albums in 2012, form The SAY Award Longlist. This year’s Nominators included journalists, bloggers, radio presenters and producers, promoters, retailers, venues, club DJs, festival organisers, academics and music fans from elsewhere in the arts. Over 270 albums were considered eligible with more than 135 albums picking up at least one vote from a Nominator. Following a four-week promotion when the public will have the chance to stream every one of the twenty longlisted titles, there will be a 24-hour voting window on Monday 27 May when the public can choose their favourite from the list.

The Lowland Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland is a part time professional wind band, which is part of the Territorial Army (TA). There are no formal auditions, and you do not have to prepare a piece; it will be an open rehearsal where you will be invited to sit in with the band, play through some major wind band repertoire and have the opportunity to meet their musicians and ask any questions.

THE FELT TIPS

The role of the Lowland Band is to provide musical support to the military in Scotland on ceremonial occasions. These engagements include Royal Garden Parties, State Banquets, Guards of Honour at Holyrood Palace and Gun Salutes at both Stirling and Edinburgh Castles. The Band is able to provide an extra dimension to any military, corporate or civil occasion; it has a wide range of musical style from the more traditional concert and marching bands through to its Ceilidh Band and smaller brass and woodwind ensembles. During its existence the Band has travelled widely representing the Royal Regiment of Scotland in France, Belgium, Jersey, Germany and more recently Canada. www.thefelttips.com

CRAIG JEFFREY

The Felt Tips play melodic guitar driven songs about your life - this is their 2nd album and it was recorded in Glasgow's CaVa studios. It adds an attacking edge to th guitar chiming realism of 2010's debut album 'Living & Growing'

The Royal Regiment of Scotland can boast a musical link stretching back to the times of famous composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. Although Scottish regimental music is usually linked with the Pipes and Drums it also has a long musical tradition of marching with a military band; there is a mention of 'a band of music' within the 1st or Royal Regiment of Foot as early as 1763. As a part time professional wind band, The Lowland Band offers good rates of pay, including tax free bonus and travel expenses, professional instruments are supplied and the band has superb rehearsal and fitness facilities. With a minimum time commitment of 27 days per year you have would have the opportunity to play at prestigious events as part of the wind band or one of the smaller ensembles including, ceilidh band, brass group and dance and jazz band - plus making new friends and summer travel. Fèis a’ Bhaile looking forward to its 21st birthday Fèis a’ Bhaile in Inverness will this year celebrate its 21st anniversary and is inviting new volunteers to come forward and help in the running of its annual Fèis week, scheduled to take place at Millburn Academy from Monday 14 to Friday 18 October. Over the past 20 years hundreds of children attending Fèis a’ Bhaile have experienced the delights of traditional music with expert tuition in a wide range of instruments such as fiddle, clàrsach, chanter, accordion, tin whistle, mandolin, bodhran, step dancing and Gaelic singing. As well as boosting confidence and fostering new friendships many former participants have gone on to become accomplished musicians. Long standing Fèis committee member, Katie Adam, has seen first-hand the benefits young people gain from participating in the Fèis: “The Fèis has welcomed many participants over the years including well known performers such as clàrsach player Gillian Fleetwood, fiddler Adam Sutherland and accordionist John Somerville who are both members of the Treacherous Orchestra. It’s a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in traditional music, the Gaelic language or community work in general to contribute to a very successful traditional arts event.” Fèis a’ Bhaile is keen to keep nurturing young talent and is looking for new committee members and volunteers to help run the Fèis this year. James was educated at Edinburgh's Napier College Department of Music from 1983 to 1986 where he obtained an L.G.S.M. in saxophone teaching. He then went on to study at The London College of Music becoming a G.L.C.M. After leaving music college, he became a private music teacher from 1990 - 95. James was diagnosed with a life-long illness in 1997. However, in 2003, he began composing music inspired by his Christian faith, beginning with The Joy of the Lord for piano solo. An idea for a new music business called Mannheim Classics soon followed which offers private music tuition - saxophone/piano tuition, music history, theory and harmony, also a Song Transcription Service and the sale of his compositions. The first two compositions, The Joy of the Lord and Visions of Heaven were recorded in 2008 and are now in the internal EMI catalogue. This catalogue can be accessed by film and television producers: http://www.emiclassics.com In 2008, the recording of Visions of Heaven was used as part of the soundtrack to a short film promoting the music charity, Polyphony. These two recordings have been released on the Internet on a worldwide release through the following stores – Amazon, Deezer, eMusic, HMV Digital, iTunes, MediaNet, Napster, Nokia Music, Play.com, Spotify, We7, Zune, 7 Digital and 24-7 (Release date 7th March 2012). The Song Transcription Service had its first commission in 2009 from an American music student for a transcription of the Gaelic lament, Ailein Duinn. This song had been used in the film Rob Roy. This score is available for inspection at the Scottish Music Centre. James V. Conn’s latest composition is The Light of the World for piano solo.

In particular they are keen to explore new concert formats and commission new works. If you are interested in hearing more about these plans please contact the orchestra. PANDA SU : single - 'Maps' release date - out now : www.pandasu.co.uk

Panda Su's new single 'Maps' has been officially released through Peter Panda Records and is now available for download via iTunes, Amazon and 120 other online stores worldwide. Listen to 'Maps' here https://soundcloud.com/pandasu/maps Watch 'Maps' (Live) video http://youtu.be/v47mmOuP0-M Having garnered huge critical acclaim for her first two mini releases Sticks and Bricks (2010 produced by Steve Mason) and I Begin (2011), Panda Su is back with new single 'Maps', which is released on Peter Panda Records. After being awarded Best Scottish Newcomer photo by Sandie Maciver (Jockrock Poll), Panda Su quickly found the appeal spreading beyond her adopted homeland. Her track Eric is Dead was the only track by a Scottish artist on the French release Fete de la Musique and was featured on the season 4 finale of cult TV show Skins, resulting in over 1000 German fans singing the chorus back to her somewhat unexpectedly at the Berlin Karnival de Kulturen later that year. In 2012, Panda Su's 'Alphabet Song', from the I Begin EP, was used in the Hollywood Box Office #1 House At The End Of The Street, starring Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence. In the same year, Panda Su was listed as one of '10 Scottish bands you might not have heard of but should' by Q. Panda Su will play Doune The Rabbit Hole Festival (Main Stage) on Saturday 24 August, with more festival announcements and a full UK tour to follow later in the year. https://twitter.com/pandasu

CACTUS & CARDIGAN Gag Reflex

ARDENTJOHN Waiting for the Season Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

‘Waiting for the Season’ is the result of five days spent up at the cottage on Loch Fyne. This was followed by many months of homemade mixing, debating, remixing, arguing, making up and pulling in a few favours from some talented musician friends of ours. Though we’ve never been shy of a reverb dial or an overdub, this time, we wanted to capture as many instruments live and in the same room as we could. We hope that you enjoy the result. Listen:

ep : cd / download Release Date: 26 April Gag Reflex is the debut EP from Cactus & Cardigan. The band went into the studio at the start of the year to record five relentless, song shaped bombardments, containing bizarre lyrics, pounding percussion and dextrous guitar work. In turn, creating a sonic assault, taking influence from bands such as Cancer Bats and Reuben.
