Nairn Book and Arts Festival Launches New Songwriting Competition Winning entrants to perform live at Festival Nairn : 3-8 September

Organisers of the Nairn Book and Arts Festival are calling for entries for a new songwriting competition. A Nairn Festival first, the competition will be judged by top Scottish singer/ songwriters Gillian Frame and Findlay Napier. Winning entrants will receive a cash prize and perform live at the Festival, in a concert to be headlined by Frame and Napier, best known as members of folk group Back of the Moon and, subsequently, contemporary indie folk band Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers. Elizabeth Findlay, Chair of the Nairn Book and Arts Festival said: “This new competition offers a great opportunity for a budding songwriter to perform their work live in a concert featuring two of Scotland’s finest musicians, and we’re looking for young talent as well as entries from more experienced musicians. It’s an exciting new element to the Festival, now in its tenth year.” The Nairn Book and Arts Festival runs from 3-8 September. Competition winners will be informed in late August and asked to perform their song, or have someone of their choice perform it, in a concert on 4 September at Nairn’s Little Theatre. Entries from under-18s and over-18s will be judged separately and two cash prizes will be awarded in each age category. All topics and styles of song will be considered, and the focus of judging will be on the nature and content of the song, rather than performance. Entries must be received by 31 July 2013. For more information about the competition and how to enter, visit www.nairnfestival.co.uk Gillian Frame and Findlay Napier first won acclaim with Back of the Moon. Gillian, a fiddle player and singer, was the inaugural winner of the Young Scottish Traditional Musician Award and has subsequently toured and recorded with a number of bands. Findlay is a respected songwriter, known for the contemporary indie folk sound of his band Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers, with whom both now perform. Findlay has hosted the 'Late Night Session' at Celtic Connections and is the organiser of Hazy Recollections, a mini festival that celebrates and connects acts at the boundaries of the indie, folk and roots scenes.

Biding Time (remix) is a stunning collaboration between musician Louise Quinn (A Band Called Quinn), Grid Iron Theatre Director Ben Harrison and Scottish Film maker Uisdean Murray in response to international shared story project Biding Time. The show combines a live band with feature-film-quality visuals, a big rabbit & the first ever use of silent disco technology in this context to give a truly immersive & original audience experience. Biding Time (remix) tells the story of aspiring singer/ songwriter Thyme and her journey through the fame factory as she pursues success in the music industry. A lot of it is based on Louise Quinn's own experience of being signed to a major record label and the highs & lows that ensued. REVIEWS The show premiered to a sold out audience at The Arches last autumn and garnered 4 star reviews from The Scotsman, The Herald, TV Bomb & The Public Reviews: '....A vital piece that's alternately comical and sinister but musically compelling throughout.' SEVEN HEARTS : “The heart is the root of all emotions” ..... an MNS band profile by Melanie Miller

Scottish lass and vocalist Zoe Harris, originating from Haddington in East Lothian met Bosnian born guitarist Vladimir Keca whilst travelling the world. Their friendship developed as they enjoyed and nurtured each other’s musical talents which ultimately resulted in the formation of their eclectic acoustic folk roots act Seven Hearts. The pair, based in Melbourne Australia, have since launched their six song debut EP “The Story of Three” in March 2012 to huge acclaim with over 200 fans turning out in support, with the video for their single “Mono Girl” due to be released soon. They are also now listed on Australia’s “Triple J Unearthed”, an award winning initiative for discovering and sharing independent and unsigned artists across the country. You can vote for and write a review for their track “Murder”. Vladimir emigrated to Australia as a refugee during the 1990s where he later became guitarist for the cult ethno fusion rock act Jika with whom he recorded and toured with for 12 years, he has also worked as a guest guitarist for a number of different touring bands. His cultural upbringing in Bosnia meant he grew up listening to eastern style Balkan gypsy music, erring away from popular westernised influences down a more progressive and experimental route. Zoe’s musical influences follow a similar dynamic with her love of folk, roots and reggae, and an intense focus on the lyrical meaning of songs. She describes herself as happiest whilst singing around a campfire with much of their writing and creative processes occurring whilst travelling, chilling out and camping. The Seven Hearts vibe is undeniably natural, candid and pure. Zoe’s vocal and lyrical talents are heart-warming and emotionally charged, weaving the tale of her personal journeys; understanding old and new love, the pain and joy of learning life’s lessons and the meaning of loving honestly - stories which we can all relate to. Combined with Vladimir’s rhythmic guitar riffs and some funky percussive grooves, their music makes for easy and soulful listening. The beautifully designed artwork for both their logo and EP cover, created by some faithful and talented fans, has a similarly natural, organic and emotion focused feel, in keeping with the Seven Hearts sentiment. The quote from their EP “The heart is the root of all emotions, my heart bleeds to grow, when you look inside and you will find all your beauty in your mind” encompasses the powerful qualities embedded within Zoe’s lyrics.

So, stop by Seven Hearts Facebook page and give them a ‘like’, take a minute to listen to their tunes and check out their merchandise. The pair will also be visiting Scotland in August 2013 and have plans for some intimate gigs in Zoe’s hometown of Haddington and Edinburgh. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for regular updates.

VAMM : album - 'VAMM' release date - out now : www.vamm.co.uk

VAMM is the work of three of our finest string players – Patsy Reid, Catriona Macdonald and Marit Fält who have combined their prowess to create a music that’s rich, refined, joyous and new. Did we mention it was new? The tunes that VAMM have recorded on their debut collection were chosen for their melodic beauty and harmonic and rhythmic potential. They’re tunes that, while rooted in the Scottish and Scandinavian traditions of the band’s respective backgrounds, have been set free to soar and surprise in gorgeous and driving arrangements that dart between old and new, classical and traditional, restful and rousing. While their joint CV includes past positions in globally respected groups such as Breabach and Blazin’ Fiddles, alongside several critically acclaimed Celtic Connections New Voices commissions, VAMM is unlike anything you’ve heard from these three musicians before. In concert and in the studio, Patsy, Catriona and Marit challenge each other to play to the edge of their talents, exploring texture, tone and harmony with a unique combination of fiddles and Låtmandola. The sound of VAMM is the thrill of the new. The remaining album launch tour dates during May are:17th Tayvallich Village Hall, 01546 870 363; 18th Braemar Village Hall, 01330 825 431; 21st Inverness Eden Court Theatre, 01463 234 234; 25th Shetland Fetlar Public Hall, 01595 745 555; 26th Lerwick Mareel 01595 745 555
