Glasgow’s favourite festival, which celebrates its 18th birthday this year, has launched a fundraising campaign to raise £50,000 to be able to progress the much loved Mardi Gras Parade on Festival Sunday, 9 June. Festival Sunday is always a favourite for people who attend the festival, particularly the parade. However, given the recession and as sponsors tightened their belts, festival organisers decided not to progress Festival Sunday last year. Instead it focused on the strengths of the Festival; culture and community, limiting any financial impact.

Liz Scobie, the Festival’s chairman, comments on the work and finance that goes into organising the parade: “This year we will celebrate the festival’s 18th birthday! That’s testament to the support we’ve gained over the years and the success of the festival in the west end. “Last year we didn’t have our usual parade and some people were disappointed, but we need to be realistic why it couldn’t go ahead. It comes at a price and the costs of road closures, security and clearing-up have sharply risen. Although we have generous funding from organisations such as Creative Scotland, Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council, that alone, is not enough to put on such a show. So we would ask for early support this year to ensure the success of the Mardi Gras Parade. The message is; “Get involved!”

There were an estimated 1,800 artists and performers at the 2012 festival. It continues to attract visitors into the City from beyond the City boundaries, last year making up 30% of all visitors. A sought-after stage slot at one of the summer’s major music festivals is going for a song – or rather three songs – with unknown artists being urged to step into the limelight. The award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival, which will be headlined by Van Morrison, Dougie MacLean, Capercaillie, The Battlefield Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, is again offering a platform for a new band or singer during the flagship event. Acclaimed singer Julie Fowlis has voiced her support for the contest which will see the successful act following in the footsteps of last year’s winners, Glasgow-based trio Muran who, just six months after forming, played on the main stage of the festival which attracted over 14,000 fans over its four days. HebCelt, which is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year, will be held from 17-20 July in Stornoway in the island of Lewis. It attracts interest across the world and was recently selected as one of the Top 10 UK summer festivals by influential music publication Songlines for the third successive year.

The One Step Further competition is open to any young band or performer, aged between 18 and 25 at the time of the festival, playing a genre of music that reflects the general programming of the event. The winner will be able to perform live on either Friday, 19th or Saturday, 20th July within the main arena. They will also receive £250 towards expenses.

Festival Director, Caroline MacLennan, said: “The festival prides itself on helping to bring young talent from throughout the Celtic nations to a wider audience and this competition offers a significant opportunity for an artist or artists to showcase their talent to a large and appreciative crowd. We would encourage performers to put together a creative presentation to sell their music to the judges and perhaps win that coveted slot on stage.” Julie Fowlis, originally from North Uist, was given one of her first opportunities to sing solo at a festival when she performed at HebCelt in 2003. She has since gone on to international stardom and sang on the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning Disney Pixar animated film Brave. One of the first inductees to the HebCelt Hall of Fame and an ambassador for the event, Julie said of the One Step Further contest: “This is a wonderful opportunity for a young singer or band to perform live at a major festival and in front of a large and international audience. HebCelt is renowned for promoting up and coming artists and should be commended for providing this platform which could be a real stepping stone to success for someone.”

To enter, artists need to prepare a promotional pack in electronic format that includes links to three good quality recordings of their music, at least one high resolution photograph and a biography. The judging process will take place throughout next month with the winning artist/s being chosen by 4 May. Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival illuminates this year’s line-up Dumfries & Galloway : 24 May – 2 June

Highlights include the premier of new production of CARMEN, brought to the festival by one of the UK’s leading opera companies: Opera a la Carte, which will take place on Friday 24 May at Easterbrook Hall, Dumfries. Another opening night highlight is the upbeat celtic tunes of SHOOGLENIFTY, who will be performing at Dalry High School and the National Theatre of Scotland’s remarkable production CALUM’S ROAD taking place 25 May, Theatre Royal, Dumfries. The ten day festival is packed with fantastic highlights from the world of music, theatre, literature and visual art and features over 170 artists performing in 51 live events at 31 venues across the region. I think the programme is one of the strongest we’ve ever put out and there will be lots of ways to get involved over the coming months, so keep an eye on our website and facebook page for updates.” A week before the official start of the festival, a spectacular night time outdoor arts installation LIMINAL, will take place on 18 May at Cardoness Beach, Gatehouse of Fleet. This unique arts adventure is hoped to bring new visitors to the area and is tipped to be one of the ‘must see’ shows of the festival. Sid Ambrose, Curator explains: “We wanted to create something really quirky that reflected one of the best assets the region has; we have over 200 miles of coastline in Dumfries & Galloway and this impressive arts installation was created to reflect the importance of the coastline. A giant 8 metre sphere will be installed on the mud flats when the tide is out and moving abstract images will be projected onto it. The images were filmed in this beach area and represent the ever-changing tidal environment.” Liminal takes place on Saturday 18 May at Cardoness Beach, Gatehouse of Fleet. Wickerman announces Solus lineup and return of goNORTH stage

New wave rock band Vukovi will headline the tent on Friday, while Saturday’s lead act will be tech-electro trio Roman Nose. They will be joined by Fat Goth, TeKlo, Woodenbox, Siobhan Wilson, Vigo Thieves and Fake Major, as well as other rising stars. Glasgow four-piece Vukovi will be returning to the festival with the promise of a raucous performance and a sound influenced by the likes of Skunk Anansie and Rage Against the Machine. The band’s reputation for delivering a storming live set was built on sold out shows throughout Glasgow and its alternative, experimental sound is guaranteed to be a hit with Wicker fans. Vukovi will be joined by energetic electro act Woodenbox play the Solus Tent : http://www.wdnbx.com/ Teklo, dubbed ‘One to Watch’ by the BBC, and his yet-to-be released new material is sure to wow the crowds. On Saturday, the Solus tent will pick up the pace with masked trio Roman Nose who write, produce and direct their own tech-electro stage shows. Their bass-heavy existence and heart-crunching sound is set to have the tent jumping. Also announced for Saturday are hotly tipped act Vigo Thieves, a Wishaw band who use driven beats, explosive synthesisers and soaring emotionally charged vocals to produce epic songs which echo the likes of New Order and U2. Other line-up additions include alt-folk sextet Woodenbox who have been working alongside acclaimed producer Paul Davage to release a second album. Also announced are Dundonian three-piece Fat Goth whose fastpaced, dirty basslines and thumping lightening quick beats effortlessly blend moments of off-kilter instrumental perfection. Solareye, the emcee of Edinburgh six-piece Stanley Odd whose word craft is awesomely eloquent, will also take to the stage. The Solus Tent will also see RUNGS, Honeyblood, Siobhan Wilson, Behold the Old Bear and Young Philadelphia commanding the stage on Friday. On Saturday, Flutes who is famous for its deep choruses and progressive hypnotic melodies, will be entertaining fans as well as widely acclaimed duo Fake Major, who will be drafting in some additional limbs to help create a live sound similar to the full band arrangements heard on its first EP Have Plenty of Fun. They will be joined by Machines in Heaven, Bears Arms, Kayce One and Toni Smoke, Vasa, The Recovery and Saint Max and the Fanatics. The fourth Solas Festival will be held on 21–23 June near Perth and they have just announced that We Were Promised Jetpacks will be rounding off the bill on the Saturday night. They've played all over the world since exploding out of Glasgow a few years ago. Solas are also bringing Neutral Milk Hotel side-project The Music Tapes, and the awesome Haight Ashbury to unleash the spirit (and weather?) of San Francisco to the fields of Perthshire. After three great years at Wiston Lodge, South Lanarkshire, Solas is moving to The Bield at Blackruthven. The new site retains the intimate feel Solas festival goers have all grown to know and love. Quality abounds at this year’s Perth Festival of the Arts Perth : 16-26 May Van Morrison, Jools Holland, Sir James Galway will all headline the 42nd Perth Festival of the Arts. The living legend of the flute, Sir James Galway is regarded as both the supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries. Sir James has made himself a modern musical master whose virtuosity on the flute is equalled only by his limitless ambition and vision. A list singer-songwriter Van Morrison OBE will play at Perth Concert Hall on Wednesday 22nd May. Some of his recordings, such as Astral Weeks and Moondance the live album It’s Too Late to Stop No were critically acclaimed and appear at the top of many greatest album lists. He rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he recorded the garage band classic Gloria. His solo career began with the release of the hit single Brown Eyed Girl in 1967.

After last year’s huge sell-out success Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra will return to the Festival to play on Friday 17th May with a Special Guest Roland Gift, the voice of Fine Young Cannibals. Scottish rising stars Admiral Fallow supported by Dundee band, The Hazey Janes, will also play at Perth Concert Hall.

World-renowned choir The Sixteen will sing in St John’s Kirk of Perth as part of its most far-reaching Choral Pilgrimage tour yet, encompassing 34 concerts around the UK. The tour, entitled The Queen of Heaven, will see Harry Christophers CBE and his choir perform glorious music in churches and cathedrals for which it was written. This will be a ‘musthear’ event where the group will take you through the musical evolution of the Allegri’s legendary and much-requested Miserere. The programme also features stunning music by the ‘Prince of Music’ Palestrina, as well another brilliant yet contrasting setting of the Miserere by James Macmillan. For almost seven decades, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, which will close the Festival, has been recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of the classic Russian composers. A Los Angeles Times critic recently said the orchestra ‘might well be the world’s least-heralded great orchestra’. Since Pavel Kogan became Music Director he has earned the orchestra a reputation for artistic excellence and in 2011 his name was included on a list of the ten greatest conductors of the 20th century. Beloved Clara, the story of the intense relationships between Robert Schumann, his wife Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms, has always fascinated music lovers. Music, performed by the award-winning pianist Lucy Parham, is interspersed with extracts from their letters and diaries, which are read by Martin Jarvis and Joanna David. Other gems include Horrible Histories by Birmingham Stage Company, fresh from their success at the Edinburgh Fringe, a sweet song and dance show about Jacques Brel by Edinburgh based Heels Over Head Dance Company, a Festival Ceilidh with Perthshire’s The Gallivanters and Festival favourites The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra play the music of Stan Kenton. The Festival is not only all about big name international stars but also nurtures local musical talent. Each year the Festival hosts a recital by a young Perth musician who has decided to make a career in music. This year Jessica Hall will perform a concert in St John’s Kirk on Saturday 18th May. There are many free events including daily lunchtime concerts by Perthshire Schools and by Perth Youth Orchestra, Art on the River and lots of local exhibitions. Perth Museum and Art Gallery will stage a special exhibition - A Sense of Place New & Innovative Responses to Perth & Kinross by members of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. This year the Festival invited three artists to submit ideas for a new Festival design funded by EventScotland. Cat O’Neil is the chosen artist and she has created designs which with feature for the next three Festivals in brochures, programmes, banners and advertising.

LA collective Odd Future (OFWGKTA) are one of the freshest, most inventive hip-hop groups around, and three of their finest lyrical talents Frank Ocean, Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt will add a dose of West Coast swagger to the T in the Park line-up this July. After first making an impression on the charts as a songwriter for acts including John Legend and Beyoncé, Frank Ocean emerged into the spotlight when he hooked up with Odd Future. The self-released nostalgia, ULTRA. mixtape, plus gems like Novacane and Swim Good cemented his reputation as a star in his own right and caught the attention of Kanye West and Jay-Z, who he went on to collaborate on their Watch the Throne album. Critics across the globe heaped praise on his debut studio album Channel Orange, and 2013 got off to a winning streak when he bagged both a Grammy and a BRIT Award. His T in the Park debut this July is not to be missed. Fellow Odd Future member (and the collective’s leader and co-founder) Tyler, the Creator is also Kinross-bound this July. The rapper, writer and producer extraordinaire began making music with fellow collective members Earl Sweatshirt, Left Brain, and Hodgy Beats in 2007, and since then their loyal following has rapidly grown to become a world-wide fanbase. The rapper’s T in the Park set will showcase material from his forthcoming album Wolf – the follow-up to 2011’s acclaimed Goblin LP - which is released next month. At only 18 years old, Earl Sweatshirt is Odd Future’s prodigal son and a hugely talented lyricist and performer in his own right. Following a brief hiatus the rapper is back and at the top of his game. He wowed a packed crowd of critics and tastemakers alike at SXSW last week, and anticipation for the release of his forthcoming album Doris is reaching fever pitch. Rita Ora made British chart history as the vocalist on one of the first ever drum and bass number one singles in the UK, DJ Fresh’s Hot Right Now. She followed this breakout success by topping the charts with her own debut album, which spawned another two number-one singles How We Do (Party) and R.I.P. A style icon, she counts mentor Jay-Z and fellow T in the Park act Snoop Dogg amongst her many fans (with Snoop hand-picking her to feature on his latest single, Torn Apart). After a stand-out performance at T in the Park last summer, she brings her sassy party anthems back to Kinross for the festival’s 20th year celebrations.
