Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender brings you over 45 quality acts Kilmarnock : 31 May - 2 June It is with great excitement that we can announce the complete line up for Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender 2013. Organisers have built on the success of last year’s event and added a third venue to the event to total in over 45 acts performing throughout the weekend. The festival will begin on Friday 31st May and conclude on Sunday 2nd June. Kilmarnock's Dirty Weekender will take place over three different venues including Bakers, Dirty Martini's and The Granary with a real eclectic mix of Scottish music. Headline acts performing include Esperanza, Jon Windle, Fridge Magnets, The Ok Social Club, Mechanical Smile, Junkman's Choir and Chris Helme. Festival organiser, David Hanvey comments, “After the success of last year’s event we knew we had set the bar very high, the team have worked hard to maintain that high standard. My hope is that people who attended last year enjoyed themselves and will return and show the same level of support!”

Sessions are delivered by an international group of highly experienced tutors including Phil Hilborne (Surviving as a Rock Guitarist), Hugh Burns (Getting the Right Sound) and Pete Sklaroff (Rock 2 Jazz). As a well-recognized public speaker and lecturer, Scott Cohen travels the world evangelizing new business models for the digital age. He is a visiting professor at London Metropolitan University and sits on the British Phonographic Industries Council. Scott's music career started in the late 1980s in independent and major label artist management. In addition to his responsibilities at The Orchard, Scott runs a music management company with longtime partner Richard Gottehrer. Ally Gray: Co-founder of Emubands, board member of the Scottish Music Industry AssociationAlly has been involved in the digital distribution of music since 2004, and in 2005 co-founded Emubands a simple-to-use yet powerful digital distribution service for artists and record labels. Ally’s career has also taken in concert promotion and artist management, and he is a board member of the Scottish Music Industry Association, as well as a music industry mentor for the Scottish Music Centre’s youth music project, Music+. He also regularly lectures at various colleges and universities in Scotland. Bruce Findlay: Management: Simple Minds, The Silencers, China Crisis. Bruce joined his brother in partnership and opened a record shop in Falkirk in 1967. By the early 1970s this had grown into Scotland's best-known record shop chain. In 1973, Bruce organised and promoted the first ever Edinburgh Pop Festival in association with the Edinburgh Festival featuring, amongst others Kevin Ayres, Gong, The Incredible String Band, Can, Procul Harum, Planxty and The Chieftans. Bruce started his own record label, Zoom Records in 1977 but is probably best known as the founder of Schoolhouse Management managing the affairs of, particularly Simple Minds, The Silencers, China Crisis, but also looked after the business affairs of Muriel Gray and producer Calum Malcolm. Bruce has lectured in numerous colleges and universities and is a regular speaker at music industry conferences. He was advisor to the British government when they set up the New Deal for Musicians programme.

A young female quartet who played their first gig only in February have won a coveted stage slot at one of this summer’s top Scottish music festivals. Gria secured the sought-after spot in the main arena at the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival after winning a talent competition to find the stars of tomorrow. The Glasgow-based group were voted the best of 17 high quality entries for HebCelt’s One Step Further contest which was open to any young band or performer, aged between 18 and 25, playing a genre of music that reflects the general programming of the event. ISLAND FESTIVAL VOWS ALL WILL BE ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT, AMIDST TEMPORARY LOSS OF CRUCIAL FERRY LINK Orkney : 23-26 May The Orkney Folk Festival committee has this week confirmed that it is working alongside Serco NorthLink Ferries to ensure that any potential festival travel problems are avoided, in the wake of the loss of the lifeline Stromness-Scrabster ferry link. Serco NorthLink Ferries’ MV Hamnavoe has been out of action since April 26, due to a severe engine failure. It is currently awaiting a replacement crankshaft in Rosyth, however, due to the extent of the repairs, it is anticipated that the ferry will only return to service on Saturday, May 25, at the earliest – two days after the 31st Orkney Folk Festival is due to start, in less than three weeks time.

The Knockengorroch World Ceilidh will take place for the 16th year near Carsphairn, Galloway from Thursday 23 – Sunday 26 May. The music line-up features bands which have travelled from as far as Texas and Ethiopia as well as arts, crafts and activities for all ages and persuasions. Organisers are also proud to boast that the mountain valley festival, arguably the most remote in the country, takes place under some of the brightest stars in the world. The Galloway valley in which Knockengorroch World Ceilidh nestles has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park, meaning the festival takes place under one of the darkest skies, least affected by light pollution, in the world. This recent accolade for its environs confirms Knockengorroch as one of the most beautiful and ‘off the beaten track’ locations for a music festival in the world, organisers claim. Festival organiser Katriona Holmes says that “it’s absolutely brilliant that Galloway is being recognised as an internationally outstanding natural location. There are not many festivals that can claim to have the best night sky views in the world! I hope everyone manages to get a moment to look up and lose themselves in the breathtaking beauty of a night sky free from light pollution. The World Ceilidh affords its visitors the perfect combination of a great festival in the great outdoors. Lovely vibes under the darkest skies (and that is certified)!’ The celebrated musical programme will span a multitude of genres including acts such as Asian Dub Foundation, one of the first bands to merge contemporary Western sounds with traditional Asian beats and melodies; Dizraeli and the Small Gods, a multi instrumental outfit fusing hip-hop with folk for a fresh outlook on both genres; Breabach, a young band making waves in the Scottish traditional scene who won the Scottish Folk Band of the Year at the 2012 Trad Awards; Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole, four time Grammy-award nominated Texans playing authentic and soul stirring music from Southern Louisiana and Cornishman Luke Vibert, alias Wagon Christ, a lauded creative voice in electronica and ‘ambient trip-hop’. As the festival is based in Stromness, with over two thirds of the fourday programme taking place in the town, and with Serco NorthLink Ferries one of the primary sponsors of the festival, the majority of artists and audiences were due to travel to the county via the 90 minute Pentland Firth crossing, which docks a stone’s throw from the major festival venues. Since announcing that no bookings will be taken for the route up to and including Friday, May 24, earlier this week, Serco NorthLink Ferries have been working with the festival to ensure that all bookings are transferred to alternative carriers, and that all passengers – booked or prospective – are aware of the alternative arrangements. Existing bookings, for artists as well as passengers who had booked using the festival’s patronage scheme – which entitles festival supporters to discounted travel on the firms’ Pentland Firth and Aberdeen routes – have all been re-routed through Pentland Ferries, the alternative, non-subsidised firm that sails between Gills Bay in Caithness, and St Margaret’s Hope. Busses will also be laid on to transport foot passengers between Scrabster and Gills Bay, and then St Margaret’s Hope and Stromness, whilst any larger vehicles – such as coaches – can be still be accommodated on the Scrabster to Stromness route, via the firm’s stand-in freight service. Furthermore, should demand over the festival weekend exceed the available reduced capacity, both Pentland Ferries and John O’Groats Ferries – who run a passenger-only service to Burwick, on South Ronaldsay – have confirmed that they will assist by providing additional sailings, ensuring that all festival-goers will make it to Orkney and Stromness for the event – one of the largest and most popular throughout the isles. Serco Northlink Ferries are confident that the MV Hamnavoe will return to service in time for festival-goers’ homeward journeys on Monday, May 26. The company have also moved to assure the Orkney Folk Festival that neither it nor any festival passengers will be out-of-pocket as a result of the alternative arrangements. Orkney Folk Festival director, Bob Gibbon said: “As one of the principal sponsors of the folk festival, NorthLink Ferries, and latterly Serco NorthLink Ferries, have been solid supporters of the festival for many years, and so it is very encouraging to see their team in Orkney pulling out all the stops to make sure that transport to this year’s festival runs with as little disruption as possible, given the circumstances. Whilst the company has received a lot of public criticism for their response to this incident, I have to say that the local staff have been outstanding, and have really gone out of their way to help in what I can only imagine is a very stressful time for everyone. Doune & Dunblane Fling May 23-26 Like many others, the Fling was conceived with the help of music and alcohol. It began as an idea at the Dunblane Folk Club, among a group of people fond of music and fun. And so in May 1993 the first Fling happened. Since then the Fling has gone from strength to strength. Somewhere along the line the first 'Fling by the River' began. Held each Fling Saturday on Dunblane's historic Drying Green, its activities have ranged from an open stage for local young musicians, fire engines, space-hopper races and fire-eating jugglers, to the annual Rotary Club race for 4,000 plastic ducks down the Allan Water. Gradually a 'Fringe Fling' has developed, featuring over the years everything from ghost walks, pub quizzes, plays from the local Drama Group, master classes in everything from fiddling or mandolins to harmony singing or bodhran, and the now-annual Thursday Jazz Night.

Newcastleton Traditional Music Festival Scottish Borders July 5-7
The Newcastleton Traditional Music Festival is probably the longest continuously running music festival in Scotland. Founded in 1970, the festival revolves around a series of competitions (mainly on Saturday), loosely linked by dances, organised ceilidhs and singarounds on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Non-combatants create adhoc sessions in all possible locations and visitors are more than welcome at every venue. Stonehaven Folk Festival July 11-14 Stonehaven What a busy year we have had. In – 2012 the festival was nominated as “Best Event” at the MG Alba Scots Trad Awards. Unfortunately we didn'’t win but the nomination was a great endorsement to what we have been doing to develop the festival over the years. 2013 will be our 25th Festival and we are hoping to make it just a little bit better than last year.
