Caravan Palace To Headline Eden Festival

www.themu.org

Moffat : 7-9 June www.facebook.com/groups/edenfestival https://twitter.com/TheEdenFestival French Electro swing maestros Caravan Palace will be swapping the bustling streets of Paris for the gentle slopes of Raehills Meadows to headline the 2013 Eden Festival. Although not yet a household name in the UK, Caravan Palace have enjoyed huge support in their native France and on the European mainland. Forties inspired dance, imagery and instrumentation blended with subtle electronics ensures that Caravan Palace will be one of the more leftfield headliners on the British festival circuit this summer. Sam and the Womp will bring a touch of instant recognition to the Eden billing. They enjoyed recent chart success with their début single “Bom Bom”. A genre defying fusion of traditional Balkan and modern dance music makes Sam and the Womp an almost ideal booking for Scotland's premier boutique festival. National treasure Craig Charles will be spinning his Funk & Soul Club back into life to entertain the Eden masses, no stranger to the festival circuit and hugely respected for his cult status both as an actor and DJ, Craig Charles is an important ingredient in this home cooked line up.

Festival producer Meredith Langley Vine commented “ We attract a very mixed audience to our event, but they seem to fly under a flag of convenience which is about having fun and enjoying less commercial forms of music. Our 2013 line up reflects this and we will once again be working flat out to provide a unique environment for people to enjoy and escape the daily grind of 21st century life.”

Slamboree perhaps more than any other booking sums up the ethos of the Eden festival. Described as a smorgasbord of circus performers, daredevils and entertainers the collective are a riot of colour and confusion who take each show as it comes and ensures that every gig is different from the rest. Eden press officer Sid Ambrose said “ Eclectic, enthralling, bespoke, organic, homespun, handcrafted and unique are just some of the descriptions synonymous with this event. Around 300 volunteers are striving to create a festival which is a medley of art forms and envelope pushing music, Eden has once again produced a line up which avoids obvious choices going through the motions of past glories.” Other line up confirmations include Shy Fx and Mc Stamina, The Carny Villains, The Correspondents and the Electric Swing Circus. Eden Festival will take place on the 7 to 9 June at Raehills Meadows near Moffat in South West Scotland. Tickets are now £85 per adult. Midsummer Music in Gatehouse of Fleet Gatehouse of Fleet : 21-23 June : www.musicgatehouse.com The wee festival wi' a muckle hert returns this year with a cracking line-up, and more events on over the longest weekend of the year. Gatehouse of Fleet’s annual Midsummer Music Festival has three days of live music and entertainment set in the beautiful south west Scotland. With concerts, acoustic sessions, a Youth Showcase, a "wee folk" stramash for the young at heart and a Sunday tea dance with a twist. The town really buzzes for the weekend and people come from near and far to see great music, dance and catch up with old and Malcolm Middleton new friends. Announcing the final line-up, Festival Committee Chair Franca Bruno said: “We’re really pleased with the way things are panning out. We’re opening up the main concerts with Malcolm Middleton, formerly of Arab Strap, who has built up a large international following with his own material, that he puts out under the name Human Don’t Be Angry. We also have Shelagh McDonald, a legend of the 70s folk-rock scene, who is starting to tour again. Closing out the concerts we’re enormously excited about The Black Diamond Express, a 9-piece country/blues outfit from Edinburgh. They’re playing at T in the Park in July, and make a very impressive noise!” The Festival is centred on two main concerts in the town’s primary school hall, which holds around 200 people, but there are events on all over the town straddling Friday afternoon through to Sunday night. These include two afternoon gigs in the Galloway Lodge café featuring local acts Stirrin’ the Stour and Richard Ipaint, entertainment for tots from The "Wee Folk" Stramash on Saturday morning, and a Youth Showcase on Saturday afternoon to allow older children and teenagers to display their talents.

A SELECTION OF OUR GIGS .... 23 May (Greens) Steve Poltz 26 May (Greens) Nimmo Brothers (acoustic) 29 May (Greens) Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash 30 May (Greens) The Kennedy's

Franca went on to say: “As usual, we have a “wake up” acoustic concert in the Faed Gallery at the Mill on the Fleet at Sunday lunchtime, this year featuring Darcy DaSilva from Moniaive, and two acts from Glasgow, Looking for Lola and Swing Guitars who will bring very different styles of music to soothe and then invigorate those who’ve been dancing their socks off the night before. This will be followed by a Tea Dance with a Twist in the town’s Community Centre on Sunday afternoon, with yet more bands. In addition to all this, there will be ample opportunity to take in free entertainment from musicians in the town’s pubs."

31 May (Greens) Lyndon Anderson & Sandy Tweeddale 8 June (Greens) Sid & The Spires

Friday evening’s concert also features reggae band Pepperjam, who launch their new album in May, and Mosa Funk Club from Glasgow, whose repertoire focuses on rootsy dance music.

But Midsummer Music is not just about bringing in top class musicians from outside the area. Franca pointed out that two of the acts on the Saturday evening will be local bands with growing national reputations: The Razorbills, whose album “To Hell with Youth and Beauty” has been described by fRoots magazine as “refreshingly individualistic… quirky and brassy”, and Saint Max & the Fanatics, fresh from their session on Vic Galloway’s Radio Scotland programme, and performing at festivals the length and breadth of the country. “We really do think there’s something for everyone this year,” said Franca. “People come from a distance for this festival, but many people in the town also look forward to it for months. The town really buzzes for the weekend, and it’s amazing to see so many people coming together to see great music, dance and just catch up with old and new friends.”

Amazing Amber - Dougie MacLean reveals the stellar line up for the 9th Perthshire Amber Festival

Perthshire : 25 October - 3 November : www.perthshireamber.com

Buy your Amber Festival tickets here: http://www.perthshireamber.com/index.php/tickets

Headline acts including award winning songwriter Karine Polwart, Capercaillie’s Karen Matheson and AMWWF (Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher) and an exciting new collaboration known as The MacLean Project are all among the impressive line-up announced today (8 May). They’ll perform, amongst over 300 musicians, at the ten-day music festival, which takes place at venues across Perthshire from 25 October to 3 November. Thousands of music fans travel to the festival, which has established itself as an important part of the Scottish festival calendar, with visitors coming from 22 countries in 2012 to enjoy the best in Scottish, folk and world music and a very warm Perthshire welcome. Legendary singer songwriter Dougie MacLean who proudly collected a lifetime achievement from the BBC Folk Awards earlier this year, is the festival host and performs his crowd pleasing songs at various concerts during the festival. The festival is the brainchild of Dougie and his wife, Festival Director Jennifer MacLean. Dougie MacLean explains: “I have played at a lot of festivals in 39 years as a musician and I always thought ‘wouldn’t it be nice to bring the musician friends that I’ve made over the years to play in my home region?’. Perthshire is especially remarkable to visit in the autumn time and I’m always very proud to bring new people to the area as well as welcome back many old friends to the stage and the audience.” He continues: “I really hope this year’s line-up will enthuse people as much as it has the festival team – we feel there will be a very fresh and exciting vibe in Perthshire this autumn. It’s going to be a great one and I can’t wait.” Other festival highlights will include: Musical legend Buddy Macdonald from Cape Breton in Canada and rising talent from Seattle, USA SeaStar, among others, performing at the Dougie MacLean with Friends Concert in Perth Concert Hall. Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson playing at Pitlochry Town Hall. Stunning instrumentalists Tim Edey and Charlie McKerron performing with Dougie MacLean in Dunkeld Cathedral and The Hazey Janes performing in Aberfeldy Town Hall. The festival hub returns to the picturesque village of Dunkeld once more with Open Mic Sessions, pub sessions and Cabaret Amber all taking place there, adding to the fantastic festival atmosphere. As ever, the festival team work hard to find unusual and quirky venues and in addition to the old favourites like the Iron Age Crannog and Castle Menzies, Murthly Castle Chapel and Butterstone Village Hall will also host special concerts this year. Dougie MacLean OBE is one of Scotland's finest songwriter-composers, internationally renowned for his song 'Caledonia', music for 'Last of the Mohicans' and inspired performances worldwide - from New York's Carnegie Hall to London's Festival Theatre and The Sydney Opera House. MacLean's songs have been covered by Paolo Nutini, Amy MacDonald, Ronan Keating, Mary Black, Frankie Miller, Cara Dillon, Kathy Mattea and many other top performers. He's recently received two prestigious Tartan Clef Awards, a place in the Scottish Music Hall of Fame and an OBE in the 2011 New Year Honours list. ‘Caledonia’ was recently voted one of Scotland’s best loved songs on the ITV Show ‘Scotland’s Greatest Album’. Earlier this year Dougie was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to song writing in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2013. A full programme can be found on the festival website www.perthshireamber.com and tickets are now on sale from the website or on the ticket hotline 01350 724 281.

Blas 2013 Festival Launch Beckons Highlands : 7-14 September : www.blas-festival.com

Organisers of Blas 2013, the premier event celebrating all that is good about the Gaelic language and culture of the Highlands, are gearing themselves up for the launch of the ninth packed programme of events, featuring top performers and several new works. Blas 2013 will run from Friday 6 until Saturday 14 September and will deliver well over 100 cultural events at a variety of venues across the Highlands. Featured artists will include top musical talent such as Capercaillie, Mànran, Cruinn and Seumas Begley & Jim Murray. In addition, Gaelic writers and literature will be well represented through a partnership with Comhairle nan Leabhraichean and the annual Scottish-Irish literary event, Cuairt nam Bàrd, which will form part of the festival. Tickets for the events at Eden Court are on sale now and full details of a spectacular programme of events will be launched at an event in the theatre complex on Thursday 13 June. Headlining the opening extravaganza at Eden Court on Saturday 7 September will be awardwinning Mànran along with Cruinn - James Graham, Fiona Mackenzie, Brian Ó hEadhra and Rachel Walker - joined by The Highland Council’s Cèilidh Band, Snas, and the all-conquering Dingwall Gaelic Choir. Festival Director, Donna Macrae, has picked out the 30th anniversary celebration of the formation of Capercaillie as one of this year’s personal highlights. She said: “Tickets for the Eden Court events are already available and anyone wanting to buy tickets for Blas 2013 should look out for the full programme following the 13 June launch and take advantage of the earlybird discounts that will be available for all events. At the launch we will have some very exciting news about our full programme of concerts, our community programme and new works to be presented exclusively at Blas 2013.” The Blas Festival is a partnership between Fèisean nan Gàidheal, The Touring Network and its main funder, The Highland Council. About Blas ..... The Blas festival is in its ninth year, it was created as a result of The Highland Council’s desire to create a new festival, which would match the vitality of Cape Breton’s Celtic Colours Festival. Fèisean nan Gàidheal was asked by The Highland Council to develop and deliver the festival, which has done successfully in partnership with local Fèisean and promoters who are part of The Touring Network. The festival director is Donna Macrae of Firefly Productions, who is contracted by Fèisean nan Gàidheal to deliver all the programming and administrative work required to put Blas together. The Blas festival makes a virtue of featuring homegrown talent alongside internationally-renowned traditional musicians. Gaelic plays a very prominent part in every Blas event, making it a key Highland cultural event.

Mànran

The Blas Festival primary sponsors and supporters include The Highland Council, Creative Scotland, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Scottish National Heritage, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Fèisean nan Gàidheal. Other bodies will work collaboratively in organising events as part of the festival, these include Highlife Highland, Live Music Now, Music in Hospitals, Exclusively Highland, The National Trust for Scotland, The National Theatre of Scotland, Cli Gàidhlig, An Comunn Gàidhealach and Comunn na Camanachd.

The Southside Fringe is focused upon providing a fortnight of quality opportunities for acts, performers and musicians in May 2013. It’s an incredibly exciting time in the Southside with fantastic new venues The Glad Café and The Bungo actively encouraging creativity and supporting local Southside talent. The ethos of the Southside Fringe is very much ‘strength in numbers’ : the more facets of the community and local businesses who get involved the louder our voice and the bigger the Southside’s profile will be on the festival map.

Here we are folks – Orkney Folk Festival number 31! Once again we have some big names coming north to join in the fun in May, and from the ceilidh bands to the almost indie strand, we have brought together a broad mix of artists that we hope appeals to everyone’s interpretation of the increasingly expansive folk genre. We are also excited to be working on some new and collaborative events within our fourday programme, more of which will be revealed in the New Year.

Gradually a 'Fringe Fling' has developed, featuring over the years everything from ghost walks, pub quizzes, plays from the local Drama Group, master classes in everything from fiddling or mandolins to harmony singing or bodhran, and the now-annual Thursday Jazz Night.

As ever, our local traditions and musicians – both established and emerging – will be centre stage alongside those visiting the festival. You would be hard pushed to find another festival throughout the country that has such a strong home representation, and it is one that we are hugely proud of.

Somewhere along the line the first 'Fling by the River' began.
