Glasgow is to host Third European Forum on Music Re>>generating Europe through Music – The 3rd European Forum on Music in Glasgow

Register for the forum : http://www.emc-imc.org/efm/registration/

The European Music Council (EMC) together with the Scottish Music Centre are organising the 2013 European Forum on Music which will take place from 18 – 21 April in Glasgow. Glasgow as the host city has a strong history of regeneration through music and culture, which started in 1990, when the city celebrated the title of European Capital of Culture. What lessons can be learnt from Glasgow, and can these be applied to the broader European context which is currently being challenged by the financial, economic and social crisis that is affecting an increasing number of Europe’s populace? The aim of this latest edition of the European Forum on Music will be to explore what role music and culture can play in this situation and to discuss latest trends and developments of the music sector in Europe. Set in the stunning Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, the third European Forum on Music will bring together musicians and music activists from across Europe to debate, network and share experiences. Themes explored in the sessions will include the role of music in cities, community and identity building, and the economic and social aspects of music. Pete Wishart MP and Professor Simon Frith have been confirmed as keynote speakers. Gill Maxwell, Scottish Music Centre MD, said, “ We’re looking forward to welcoming our European colleagues to Glasgow next month for what’s shaping up to be a stimulating few days of discussion and debate. And, of course, we’re gathering a wide range of Scotland’s young music talent to showcase to our guests.”

The awards support musicians from any genre at the start of their careers, helping them to fund exciting projects and progress to the next level in their musical development. Following a successful pilot round in 2012 which saw 18 projects supported with grants ranging from £1,000 to £4,000, the latest round of funding will help a further 28 talented young musicians and groups.

Rudi Zygadlo

Seven of the outstanding applicants received awards following a pitching session to a panel of musicians and music industry experts including percussionist Joby Burgess, composer and producer Mira Calix, cellist and vocalist Matthew Sharp, and publisher Paulette Long. Successful applicants include the avant-pop marching band Perhaps Contraption, electronic musician Rudi Zygadlo, classical violinist Sadie Fields, singer songwriter J’Danna and Bristolbased jazz group Moonlight Saving Time. Several award holders will also receive mentoring as part of the scheme. The Musicians Benevolent Fund has been supporting musicians for more than 90 years. Scotland @ South by Southwest Photos below from SXSW by Drew Farrell

More than twenty thousand people from every corner of the globe flocked to Austin Texas last week to enjoy the world’s most prestigious international showcase for contemporary music, South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW). Amongst the thousands of acts performing to industry representatives and fans were artists who took part in two Showcasing Scotland concerts, presented by Creative Scotland and PPL.

Kassidy

On Wednesday 13 March five bands including, Kassidy, The View, PAWS, Holy Esque and Tango in the Attic took to the stage of the British Music Embassy. The second Showcasing Scotland concert on Friday 15 March pulsed with some of the brightest names from Scotland’s electronic music scene with sets from Jackmaster (Numbers), Young Fathers, JD Twitch from Optimo and Rustie. South by Southwest offers a unique range of business opportunities for those working in the music industry. The Showcasing Scotland concerts provide a spotlight for Scotland’s presence at SXSW, attracting industry professionals and music lovers. In addition to programming the two showcases Creative Scotland supported The View, Young Fathers, PAWS, Kassidy, Jackmaster, and JD Twitch from Optimo to attend the festival alongside a number of Scottish industry representatives there to do business. Festival-goers also enjoyed performances from Selkirk indie rock band Frightened Rabbit and Glasgow band CHVRCHES, who made their US debut at the festival. CHVRCHES made a big impression with their synthpop sounds winning The Grulke Prize for Non-US Act, winning alongside top acts Haim and The Flaming Lips. The Prize, awarded in three categories, was developed in honor of Creative Director Brent Grulke, who passed away in 2012. Glasgow record labels and artists collectives Numbers (http://nmbrs.net) and Luckyme (http://thisisluckyme.com) also presented their own showcase concerts in packed out venues. The annual SXSW event includes film and interactive conferences and festivals as well. As part of the film programme, SXSW hosted the world premiere of The Great Hip Hop Hoax, directed by Jeanie Finlay, which tells the story of Dundonians Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain, who fooled the music industry into believing they were Californian rappers Sillibi n Brains. The film is supported by BBC Scotland, BBC Storyville and Creative Scotland. Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said: “Showcasing Scotland at SXSW provides a unique opportunity to present Scotland's vibrant music scene to music lovers and industry professionals from across the world. SXSW is an important platform for artists to develop their careers internationally, enabling them to make new connections and meet potential labels, booking agents and promoters. It also provides an opportunity to connect with other artists, opening up avenues to possible future artistic collaborations. Scotland has long since been a significant force at SXSW and the 2013 showcases were no different with such a talented line up of bands and DJs. Early feedback shows that it has been a fruitful trip." On performing at the festival, Glaswegian folk rock band Kassidy, said: “We had one of the best weeks of our lives at SXSW. We met a lot of helpful people for the band such as radio producers, promoters and agents and played in front of some great audiences who responded well. There are a lot of foreign bands who we’ve made contact with through the internet and it was particularly nice to meet them face to face. We stayed with a fantastic group of people through “SXSW Housing” who will be friends for life. Austin is an amazing place and SXSW is a fantastic festival, it’s been very inspirational for us.” While Edinburgh based rap trio, Young Fathers, said: “Young Fathers trip to SXSW in Texas this year was wholly worthwhile. With three 'official' showcases we were unusually blessed (we also had a fourth, below the wire show for Needledrop/Terroreyes out on the east side of Austin in a warehouse). Turnout was great on all the shows and the group went down a storm. This was also an opportunity for us to meet the label and some of the other Americans working with us and for them to catch the group live. No one was disappointed.”

A judging panel of 14 of Scotland’s most respected and influential music industry experts will then listen to each demo before selecting the final 16 acts who will go on to join the line-up for T in the Park 2013 and land themselves a highly coveted slot on the T Break Stage. Some of the world’s biggest acts are already confirmed for the T in the Park’s 20th year over 12th – 14th July, including headliners Mumford and Sons, Rihanna and The Killers, plus Stereophonics, Calvin Harris, Kraftwerk, Snoop Dogg, alt-J, Two Door Cinema Club, Jake Bugg, The Lumineers, Paloma Faith, Azealia Banks and Haim. SKERRYVORE : 'deluxe' album - 'World of Chances' release date - out now : www.skerryvore.com Skerryvore, the award-winning band that hail from the tiny Isle of Tiree in Scotland and have gone on to become an international sensation performing everywhere from Chicago to Shanghai, have released a deluxe version of their fourth album ‘World of Chances.’ The deluxe version contains six bonus tracks including live and acoustic versions of tracks featured on the original release. Constantly touring the world, 2013 will see Skerryvore hit the road once more, please see attached tour dates. When Skerryvore first formed on the tiny Isle of Tiree off Scotland’s west coast in 2005, little could they have known that within only a matter of years they would be performing in over 20 countries worldwide, playing to audiences from Chicago to Shanghai, with four albums and an array of industry awards under their belt. Back then, Skerryvore consisted of Tiree-born brothers Daniel Gillespie (accordion) and Martin Gillespie (bagpipes, whistles & accordion) who bonded with holidaymaker Fraser West (drums & vocals) and friend Alec Dalglish (lead vocals & guitar) over a shared love of music: everything from traditional to rock and jazz. It was this mix of musical styles and sounds that set the path for the band’s debut album, ‘West Coast Life’, released later the same year and awarded Album of the Month by BBC Radio Scotland’s Celtic Connections programme.

for what is undeniably their most polished and radio-ready album to date, ‘World of Chances’. Created in collaboration with producer and guest musician Alan Scobie (keyboards & percussion), and recorded in part at the iconic Fisher Lane Studio (Genesis, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, The Cure), ‘World of Chances’ weaves together the band’s spine-tingling musical talents with the awardwinning song writing abilities of front-man Alec Dalglish (Frankie Miller Songwriter of the Year 2011).

The more the fledgling band experimented with fusing together different At times uplifting, at times reflective, the result is a brighter, breezier, influences, the more their signature sound evolved, aided by the arrival of feel-good sound that looks set to broaden the band’s appeal even further, new members Barry Caulfield (bass & vocals) and Craig Espie (fiddle) in with ‘World of Chances’ having already been selected as Album of the time for second album, ‘On The Road’, in 2007. STMA Live Act of the Year 2011, and garnering much critical acclaim: “Skerryvore are the most promising young band in Scotland today.” Mick MacNeil, Simple Minds

When not touring the different corners of the globe, the band, now with bassman Colin Cunningham, can still be found performing relentlessly, contributing to projects by Live Music Now (LMN), The Royal Blind School, Artlink Central and HMP Cornton Vale as well as special needs schools throughout the UK. They also feature in a current VisitScotland TV commercial aimed at international audiences.

As word quickly spread, booking after booking followed with Skerryvore performing at venues and festivals in over 20 countries worldwide – from Bahrain to Beijing, and from Scotland’s very own T in the Park, Belladrum and Loopallu to Central Park NYC where the band played to an audience To quote the words of one local journalist: “Six of the best musical of 10,000 for Scotland Week. ambassadors Scotland could ever have wished for… a living, breathing, 12-legged party waiting to happen.” The Falkirk Herald. RANDAN DISCOTHEQUE : single - Sonderweg release date - out now : www.thebonjourbranch.co.uk Edinburgh quartet Randan Discotheque released their new album (limited edition vinyl, CD and download) via fledgling label The Bonjour Branch. Produced by the band over the last year, Sonderweg (the band's third album) features new songs such as Grandad’s Coffin (including an excellent video, created by main man Craig Coulthard), Where Did You Come From?, plus cult favourite Heather The Weather (which features a video by Scottish artist Rachel Maclean). Randan Discotheque have been playing gigs from Arbroath to Athens since 2006 and have received airplay from Jarvis Cocker, Steve Lamacq and Vic Galloway, to name a few. Consisting of singer, songwriter and visual artist Craig Coulthard (whose National Lottery funded Forest Pitch art project, near Selkirk, caused much controversy during development and then something of a sensation on completion, in August 2012 - clearly a man of many talents and not someone who rests on his laurels!), drummer Owen Curtis Williams (also of The Pineapple Chunks, Rob St John) guitarist Hugo de Verteuil (also of Snide Rhythms) and bassist Olly Ridgewell (son of Portslade). The Bonjour Branch was established in 2009 as a (mainly) 7" vinyl label by Dave Maclean (Django Django), Craig Coulthard and Andy Wake (The Phantom Band). A malted barley beat stirs in the spittooned soot and is reborn reverbed, rising phoenix-like with feathers flashing… a tiny wee record label. The album can also be streamed via The Bonjour Branch's Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/the-bonjour-branch

BATTLEFIELD BAND Room Enough For All Album : cd / download Release Date: 8 April

‘Cycles of Life' is a deeply personal, honest and ultimately uplifting account of the difficult life experiences Amy has faced and encapsulates the sense of moving from dark to light. Her determination and strength of character is evident throughout as this album doesn't dwell on the darkness but rather the ‘light at the end of the tunnel'.

A superb new release from Battlefield Band, one of the great institutions of the Scottish music scene. The band's ever-fiery instrumental dynamic, with bagpipes and fiddles to the fore, exhibits the intuitive interplay and understanding between world class traditional musicians, while their songs of social history, plaintive ballads and songs from the Scots Gaelic tradition are as powerful, relevant and moving as ever.

Having been compared to My Morning Jacket and Neil Young, In Here Somewhere features Three Blind Wolves’ warm Americana-tinged sound, yet with a chilling core. With plays and support from John Kennedy at XFM and Vic Galloway at BBC Radio 1 Scotland and the band also popped into BBC Radio 2 to perform a session for Dermot O'Leary.

‘Waiting for the Season’ is the result of five days spent up at the cottage on Loch Fyne. This was followed by many months of homemade mixing, debating, remixing, arguing, making up and pulling in a few favours from some talented musician friends of ours. Though we’ve never been shy of a reverb dial or an overdub, this time, we wanted to capture as many instruments live and in the same room as we could. We hope that you enjoy the result.
