goNORTH Keynote: Music Week talks to Rob Hallet Wednesday 4th June at 4.30pm in the Mercure Hotel, Church Street, Inverness. Rob Hallett exited his post as president of international touring at AEG Live at the beginning of May after 10 years at the company. Across this time he oversaw some of the biggest and most successful tours and events of the last decade.
Radio goNORTH is goNORTH's own bespoke radio station which broadcasts for the duration of the festival. Our trainees have been working for the last two weeks to learn on-the-job skills as budding radio professionals. Catch live performances and interviews with all our key industry talent.
With Hallett being one of the top executives in the global live industry and a key figure in the music business more generally, there’s a keen sense of intrigue surrounding his next move. He’s already teased a brand new venture with a much broader scope, combining his early artist management experience with his live expertise and more. Music Week Deputy Editor Tom Pakinkis will sit down with Hallett at this exciting point in his career to look back over his time in the industry, get his perspective on the modern music business and uncover more about his plans for the future.

goNORTH Fringe with Inverness GiGs Inverness Gigs are proud to present goNORTH Fringe at The Eagle Bar in Inverness on the 3 June. The event will bring together three Inverness favourites whilst adding a European twist! Ashley and The Cosmonauts are well know on the Inverness scene, both as a band and their individual ventures. Ashley Mackay and her Cosmonauts (aka Ben Hesling, Robin Abbot, Dickie Bills and Derek Urqhuart) have played the likes of Belladrum, including a memorable main stage opening slot in 2013 and recently supported Grousebeater Sound System at King Tuts in April. The band have a strong Fleetwood Mac sound evidenced perfectly in tunes such as “Behind These Eyes”, “Clouds” and "Castles". www.facebook.com/ashleyandthecosmonauts Sara Bills and The Has-Beens also quite happily share local favourite tags with Ashley and Co. The band’s sound is described as “alternative folk punk”. The four piece enter their fifth year in October, but it was way back in 2011 when their last recording “Spill the Beans” was released. The tracks have lost none of their poignancy over the time, with one reviewer noting “"In a sea of generic indie pop, this band retreat from lazy comparisons to Belle and Sebastian and the like, with their true creativity and local charm." www.facebook.com/sarabillsthehasbeens
Pale Honey : photo by Hilda Randulv
www.facebook.com/DevilsQueen Giving a European twist to proceedings are Gothenburg based two (or three) piece Pale Honey. Describing themselves as minimalistic rock they explain on their website “Simply put, we love what we're doing and think that the sound (with it's easy, minimal sound) is nonchalant and sincere at the same time.” They have just recently released debut EP “Fiction” with an album planned for the late part of 2014. www.facebook.com/palehoney
Chris Lemon founder of Inverness Gigs said: “We are really pleased to play a role in goNORTH 2014 and the line-up compliments the many Devil's Queen will certainly bring a change of pace, and volume, to finish fine acts to play at the Showcase this year. Get the party started at the off the event. The band have recently been reinvigorated by a change of Eagle on the 3 June.” personnel but have lost none of their ability to rock with the finest. The Inverness based 4-piece create a slightly contemporary twist on Rock and www.invernessgigs.co.uk are fresh off a mainstage appearance at the Ironworks.

about
goNORTH
goNORTH was launched in 2001 to provide a platform for artistes from the north of Scotland to showcase for music industry and media representatives on their own patch. Originally hosted across Aberdeen’s Belmont Street, it briefly relocated to Dundee, before settling in Scotland’s most northerly city, Inverness. Now covering a much wider remit including Screen & Broadcast, Designer Fashion and Publishing, the event has become firmly established as Scotland’s leading Creative Industries Festival. The goNORTH Festival Tour was introduced in 2011 as an exciting addition which takes goNORTH back to its roots and supports new music and film across some of the finest independent festivals in the country. Their partner festivals for 2014 are Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Wickerman Festival and Loopallu. Mamie Coleman, VP Music, FOX: “goNORTH acts as a gateway into the UK market and is a great way for us to access new international artists”. John Robb: “goNORTH is great on many levels, great line up of bands that goes beyond the usual dustbin indie fare, a beautiful city to hang out in and a surprisingly diverse cross Keith Harris, Director for Performer Affairs, PPL: section of people attending making it one of the best of the “goNORTH is a much more open seminar. A creative boom is set to explode across the Highland capital of Inverness next week when the annual goNORTH Festival rolls into town. The twoday long conference and showcase event promises to be bigger and brighter than ever.
The hardworking goNORTH team
The yearly festival covers all the creative industries, from fashion and craft to music, screen, broadcast and publishing. A key theme this year will be the future of digital and how it affects those working across all creative sectors. The festival’s opening keynote speech will be given by Neil Cartwright, former head of New Media at Sony Music UK and now managing director of digital marketing agency, Million Media, whose clients have included; Jamiroquai, Channel 4 and The Prodigy. Cartwright was recently named in the Courvoisier Future 500 as one of 500 people who will help shape the future of the UK. This year, for the first time in its 14-year-history, videogames will feature on the goNORTH programme, highlighting the importance of the industry to the economy of the Highlands and Islands. In collaboration with the Scottish Games Network, top game studio, Elgin-based Hunted Cow, will be creating a gaming playground in the foyer of an Inverness hotel, while leading figures in the videogame industry will gather for a Gaming Masterclass, later that day. A major fashion event on the opening night of the festival also promises to put the work of Highlands and Islands-based designers firmly on the map. As part of a short film showcase, top Scots crime writer, Denise Mina, will be showing Multum in Parvo, a short documentary film about her extended family made on an iPhone. The Scottish premier of a unique online collaborative feature, 50 KIsses, will also take place at goNORTH. Another highlight is an ‘in-conversation’ event with former Skids frontman, Richard Jobson, who epitomises the pioneering creative spirit of goNORTH. Jobson was just 17 when he became a singer with legendary Dunfermline punk band, The Skids in 1977. He has gone on to work as poet, model, actor, TV presenter and now film director working on his own scripts. New music, as always, lies at the heart of the festival, and this year, as well as showcasing the work of home-grown musical talent, organisers have worked with international partners to bring a selection of top international talent to Inverness. Artists will be taking part in the music showcase events across venues in Inverness on both nights. Announcing details of goNORTH 2014, director Amanda Millen said: “The boundaries between the creative industries are narrowing and this is coming across loud and clear in our programme this year. “The skills and disciplines required for making a successful album, videogame, film or hit television series, for example, are also required in publishing and in fashion. If people have the energy and the passion, we can direct them to the right people and places." “This year, we’ve a host of leading industry players in the field of fashion, music, gaming, screen, broadcast and publishing and the fact goNORTH is free to anyone who wishes to register makes it one of the most inclusive events of its kind in the UK.” Highlights of goNORTH will be broadcast over the course of the festival by Radio goNORTH, a two-week long training course for aspiring radio broadcasters.
