Glasgow's Symphony of Dreams Trust Is Honoured with Award The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Charitable Trust has received the Royal Seal of Approval by being awarded a ‘Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service’ in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation.

John's dream comes true!

This prestigious honour recognises outstanding contributions made by groups of two or more people voluntarily devoting their own time to improve the quality of life and opportunity for individuals in the community for the benefit of others. It recognises the vital role played by the thousands of unsung heroes of the voluntary and community world, which the Lieutenancy believe is important to celebrate and encourage. The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Trust has received the Award for making ‘musical dreams’ come true since 2000 for people of all generations from Glasgow with life-shortening conditions, are chronically sick, disabled, disadvantaged or who may suffer from the effects of poverty. Speaking of their success, Linda Ann McConnell the founder and voluntary manager of The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Trust said: “It is an honour to receive royal recognition by winning this National Honour; the Queen’s award. We are grateful and publicly thank Her Majesty The Queen, Glasgow’s Lord Provost, the award panels, our nominator: Cultural Officer from Glasgow Life and anyone who has volunteered their time. It is a blessing and gives hope for the future to keep Symphony of Dreams a reality.” The award will be presented on behalf of The Queen by the LordLieutenant at a special ceremony at Glasgow City Chambers on 30 August, representatives of the Trust also attended the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood Palace in July. The Symphony of Dreams Trust is hoping to attract sponsors and support to help make more ‘musical dreams’ come true, see an information link on this link: www.thememphislullaby.com/ downloads/symphony-info-leaflet.pdf for more details on the Trusts work.

Meanwhile continuing the trusts work, Status Quo makes another ‘Musical Dream’ come true... Status Quo helped The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Trust to make a musical dream come true for John and his dad from Stirling. A dream application was sent to the Trust by the Family Support worker from the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS). It was a special dream for many reasons. John, aged 19, who has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair has a very close relationship with his Dad John Snr. John’s musical tastes have been inspired by his Dad who is a huge Status Quo fan. John Snr said, “We were wondering what was going on because I didn’t know why I was to be at CHAS's Robin House, so when Linda Ann from The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Trust said we were going to see Status Quo it was a real surprise and I was lost for words.”

Status Quo’s Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt with John and his dad

they both said they didn’t have a favourite song they liked them all. John said, “I got into Quo because of my dad, so was a great night out for us both, we’ll never forget it. I was really excited about it, but especially excited for my Dad because it was his first concert. The band sounded great, just like their CD’s.” John Senior said “When we were told about the musical dream coming true it was a real surprise and I was lost for words. Status Quo was my first concert and was a fantastic experience.” Linda Ann McConnell said, “The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Trust are so grateful; the power of YES from the band’s manager Mr. Porter, Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt made this musical dream come true. They were lovely as always and helped make a young man and his Dad’s musical dream a reality.” This is the second time the band have helped the charity and Francis Rossi said; “The band and I were only too pleased to help ‘The ‘Symphony Of Dreams’ Trust’ fulfill a musical dream. I wish you the very best of luck in the future. Keep up the good work.” Janette McGarvey from CHAS said “John and his Dad have a very special relationship, they are more than father and son, they are best friends. The Symphony of Dreams Trust is a wonderful organisation and by arranging this experience for them they have created a memory that both will always cherish. A real dream come true!”

The ‘Symphony of Dreams’ Trust organised guest concert passes and backstage passes to privately meet Status Quo’s Francis Rossi and Rick www.thememphislullaby.com/downloads/symphony-info-leaflet.pdf Parfitt before the show. Francis came out to meet John and his dad and both he and Rick wanted to customize John’s chair and turbo it up. As the concert started they were asked what was their favourite Quo song and

Creative Scotland's new Chief Executive speaks about her first few weeks in charge The new Chief Executive of Creative Scotland, Janet Archer, has only been in what will be a challenging job for a few short weeks and below she gives her first personal impressions on that job and what she hopes to achieve at the helm of Scotland's flagship arts organisation -----------------

After my first few weeks in the job, I want to share a few impressions, my ambition for the arts, screen and creative industries and for the work of Creative Scotland.

A SELECTION OF OUR GIGS .... 4 August (Greens) The Andy Fraser Band 23 August (Greens) Just Beatles

First and foremost, I'm humbled and delighted to be appointed to lead Creative Scotland. It's brilliant to be living and working in Scotland, where the arts, screen and creative industries are recognised and appreciated for being intrinsically important by both the government and the public. The quality of work coming out of Scotland is extraordinary, across all areas of creative practice.

Janet Archer : photo by Drew Farrell

I want our future to focus on those we are here to support and the great work that they produce for people in Scotland and beyond. There are no shortage of ideas out there across the arts, screen and creative industries. I'd like more of those to be realised, with support from Creative Scotland and others.

7 September (Greens) David Latto Band 10 September (Greens) Watt Nicholl

It's clear that we have issues to resolve. The Board have recognised this and work is underway to deliver the commitments made back in December 2012.

12 September (Greens) Finbar Furey

We will produce a new plan for launch in April 2014 which will build on the first three years of Creative Scotland’s life. The plan will provide clear information about our vision, strategy and priorities, making it easy for everyone to understand why we are here and what we do. We will simplify the way that we fund and make it as straight forward and easy as possible for talented people to access advice, funding and support to fulfil their ambitions.

13 September (Greens) Blues Heroes Fraser Speirs, Allan Jones Richard O’Donnell

20 + 21 September (Greens)

FIFESTOCK STRICTLY ACOUSTIC

We have a wealth of feedback from creative people, organisations and staff to use as a starting point for future development. The open sessions earlier this year have provided a rich source of useful and powerful guidance on what artists, film-makers and creative people want and need from us. The sector reviews are also important and everyone's input is invaluable. I would like us to build on the peer to peer dialogue that has emerged through this work and continue to develop how we approach these kinds of conversations in the future.

25 September (Greens) Mick Ralphs Blues Band

THE DARK OUTSIDE Tracks wanted for broadcast to an audience of "mostly wildlife & trees" Saturday 31 August, 12pm - Sunday 1 September, 12pm @ Murrays Monument, The Galloway Forest

Stuart McLean a member of Tauchsieder and Machars Action is Frenchbloke and in a world where everything is available online, information flows instantly and where you can see live footage from someone’s phone online from half the world away he thought why not have something that physically demands that you be there? Basically Stuart is going to be in charge of a radio transmitter for 24 hours and will be playing only unreleased / unheard music in the Galloway Forest where there’s a chance that nobody will be listening! A similar project last year was a resounding success, so rather than play last years again, which he can’t as the files were deleted, Stuart's asking people if they have anything at all that they would like played to an audience of mostly wildlife & trees. The Galloway Forest as a venue is a welcome step backwards for technology, it’s a very dark place at night, which is why it was awarded 'Dark Sky Park' status. A place where just G might appear on your mobile phone if you find the right place. This isn’t a smart-phone friendly part of the world, add to that FM Radio, which works on line-of-sight from the transmitter and you have a place you have to physically get to before you can listen in. Stuarts says: "If you want to hear it, you’re going to have to come and find us. There will be no repeats, the files will be deleted after they are played." Radio receivers will be able to pick up the broadcast from as far as 5 kilometres away, depending on the direction the listener is coming from. The original broadcast page sums up what it is all about, here’s a link: http://frenchbloke.tumblr.com/post/31746073239/a-broadcast-to-the-trees

Submissions wanted for 21 August:

You can submit a track to be included at the dropbox link below. If you aren’t musically inclined but still want to participate you can send a recording of yourself reading out numbers a la Number Stations. Random numbers, numbers that mean something to you, anything at all. It doesn’t even have to be numbers. Last year they had children singing the hits of Faust, someone confessing their sins, poetry… anything and everything is welcome. Fèis Cèilidh Trails youngsters take in more than 300 performances During the first two weeks of July, youngsters from Fèis Cèilidh Trails gathered in Plockton for Fèis Alba, ahead of taking to the road across the Highlands, Argyll, Stirling and the Trossachs taking part in over 300 cèilidhs. Two groups are taking part in a National Cèilidh Trail and the Argyll Cèilidh Trail have visited Ireland before now touring in their own area.

Fèis Fhoirt Cèilidh Trail (Stirling and The Trossachs)

52 young musicians from 9 different groups took part in Fèis Alba in Plockton where they received expert tuition in organising sets, arranging Gaelic songs, setting up PA equipment in addition to learning about the important elements of being a touring musician. Fèis Rois Cèilidh Trail (Ross-shire & National Trail)

Fèis Chataibh (Sutherland)

This years list of excellent tutors included Allan Henderson (Blazin Fiddles), Alasdair White (Battlefield Band), John Carmichael (John Carmichael Cèilidh Band), Anna Massie (Blazin Fiddles), Blair Douglas, Arthur Cormack and Hector MacInnes. Calum Alex MacMillan, Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s Development Manager, said: “Fèis Alba provides an excellent opportunity to young people of the Fèisean to meet and develop their skills with their peers learning more about Gaelic song and music before taking to the road to perform what they have learned. We are delighted that we have received funding for two years from Creative Scotland that will allow us to develop the skills of the young people involved with the Cèilidh Trails initiative as well educating them further about life as professional traditional musician.” Having spent time at Fèis Alba all the groups are now touring extensively around their local areas and further afield throughout July and August. The Argyll group began their tour in Ireland, supported by Colmcille. They performed alongside young Irish musicians, before returning with this young Irish group to perform at concerts and cèilidhs in their own area. The renowned Gaelic Singer, Karen Matheson of Capercaillie fame supported the Cèilidh Trail initiative by taking part in a special concert at the Sealife Centre on Loch Lomond Shores on 17 July. Performing alongside Karen and her band were the Argyll and Lochaber Cèilidh Trails.

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE

............ member profile:

Kenneth Dempster

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

Born and educated in Edinburgh, Kenneth Dempster began his advanced musical training at Edinburgh Napier University, before going on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At the RAM he was awarded eight prizes for his compositions as well as the Inter-Collegiate, Theodore Holland Award (1986). Kenneth was awarded a variety of scholarships, which enabled him to travel to the United States to study at Yale University. During his time at Yale, he studied with many eminent composers: Jacob Druckman, Martin Bresnick, Louis Andriessen, Earle Brown and Frederic Rzewski. He was also awarded two Yale University prizes for his music. On returning to Britain (1988), he studied further with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and James MacMillan on the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's Course for Young Composers (1991). Since completing his studies, he has received commissions for new pieces of music from a wide variety of ensembles and organisations: Emperor Quartet, Hilliard Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble, English National Opera, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Edinburgh Quartet, Scottish Flute Trio, ECAT, Mr. McFall's Chamber, Scottish Chamber Choir and the St. Magnus Festival, as well as from soloists, Ursula Smith, Peter Evans, Owen Murray and Simon Thacker. In October 2002 his orchestral work, Seven Fans for Alma Mahler, commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (conductor Thierry Fischer), was widely acclaimed by reviewers and audiences alike. In June 2004 he conducted the first performances of a large-scale community opera on the subject of Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, commissioned by the St. Magnus Festival to mark the 70th birthday of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Recent commissions have been for groups as diverse as Mr. McFall's Chamber and the Edinburgh Quartet, and for the 2006 St. Magnus Festival, he was commissioned to compose a new music-theatre piece, A Hamnavoe Man to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of the Orcadian writer, George Mackay Brown. A new solo guitar work, Sanctum was commissioned by ECAT for the guitarist, Simon Thacker, who toured the work extensively in 2007. Father and Son (SATB choir and organ) was composed in 2008 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Scottish Chamber Choir; performed by them with Michael Harris (Musical Director) and Peter Backhouse (Organ). Kenneth is actively involved as a composer, conductor and music educator and was invited by partners consisting of the University of Plymouth and a body of composers from IRCAM (Paris) and PRISM to take part in an international algorithmic composition symposium (2010). This consisted of the delivery and performance of a new horn trio, aber and participation in symposium proceedings and discussions. In 2009 he devised and directed for Edinburgh Napier University a day-long symposium of concerts, lectures and discussions to celebrate the 50th and 75th birthdays of James MacMillan and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies respectively. This event took place in the presence of the two composers and reflected Kenneth's commitment to the pursuit of musical excellence at Edinburgh Napier University www.scottishmusiccentre.com/kenneth_dempster/

WILD WILD DAVE :

single - ‘Nearly Summer’

release date - out now : www.facebook.com/wildwilddave

Wild Wild Dave is an electronic art rocker, making beats from apps, tea cups, sampled seagulls, and old Yamaha keyboards. Although the methods are odd, the song craft isn't. NERD-style sparse funk, and Talking Heads pop-grooves are used with lyrics inspired by the things that effect our generation the most. In the frivolous, yet thoughtful, style of favourite author Douglas Coupland, the song lyrics reflect a world where Ryanair rules the sky, people who are too skint to buy pasta still have the best clothes, and where the amount of free time a product can give you is it's selling point. The man behind the art is Dave Maitland, from the Highlands. In his 27 years, he's done many a boring job, but some highlights were being a tour guide in Berlin and Paris, a freelance music journalist in Glasgow, and cycling from Spain to Italy with his long term girlfriend. He's also helped Oxfam raise £4500 in the Highlands with their Oxjam music projects. Just now he is focussing on a new album and founding the events/ arts collective "Wild Wild Life". "Nearly Summer" is Wild Wild Dave's debut single, and is about loss. An emergency move back to Scotland from Berlin is what inspired the song, and the lyrics were scrawled down into a notepad as the bus lurched through the gloom of the highlands. The beats were unusually created using a KORG iPad app because most of the music equipment was left behind in Berlin. Despite all this, the song has hope, and Dave describes it as "Summery beats with Wintery lyrics".
