Robbie Cooper's 'Human Is Not Alone' trilogy of concerts in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care plus Compilation Album Driven by his own battle with cancer, Robbie Cooper has united a pick of Scotland’s music talent in a trilogy of concerts in September in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care, featuring Fat Goth, United Fruit, Hey Enemy and Vasquez. Motivated by his own very positive experiences in the hands of Marie Curie Cancer Care - a result of his ongoing battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer – Scottish musician and Doctor of Psychology, Robbie Cooper was inspired to give something back to this charitable organisation that gives so much to others. Robbie has translated his inspiration into Human Is Not Alone, poignantly named after a song by Robbie's own band Laeto. Taking the form of three consecutive concerts across Scotland and a compilation album, Human Is Not Alone aims to unite the UK's vibrant underground and DIY music networks in aid of this worthy cause.

It is curated by Robbie and serves as a retrospective of his work in the Scottish music scene to date, both as a performer and occasional promoter. It will feature tracks from Robbie’s own bands Laeto, Geisha, Iron Crease and American Men and others kindly donated by: Fugazi, The Shipping News, Zu, Fat Goth, Lapsus Linguae, United Fruit, Hey Enemy, Vasquez, RM Hubbert, Titus Gein, Dead Or American, and Macrocosmica. Robbie says, “My experiences in music have given me some of the most rewarding and enduring memories of my life and it is my belief that, in an age when music is so often synonymous with crass commercialism and objectification, it can still represent something great.” Robbie is admirably set about the aims of his compilations album and concerts, which are: Firstly to raise awareness of the wonderful work done every day by Marie Curie Cancer Care and in turn raise money to help them continue that work. And secondly, to give voice to the underground and DIY musical movements in the UK and show that, far from simply a marketing utensil and commodity, music can still represent something greater to people and benefit their wider community. According to Cancer Research UK, someone in the UK dies of Cancer every four minutes. In the late and often most difficult stages of their lives, each of these people rely on the help, support and empathy offered by those around them. Last year Marie Curie Cancer Care assisted more than 35,000 people in just such circumstances.

‘Folk Rockin' 4 Flodden’ Norham : 7 September : www.facebook.com/folkrockin.forflodden

Buy your tickets now at: www.borderevents.com/event/Folk-Rock-Flodden

'Folk Rockin' 4 Flodden' will be held on 7 September opposite Norham Castle, which is just over the border in England. Being about an hour's drive from Edinburgh this will be a fantastic late summer's evening of music in a wonderful and historic countryside setting - bring a picnic for a relaxed musical extravaganza! The concert is to help commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden that happened on the 9 September 1513 and remembers the fallen of both sides. On the Scots side James IV, most of his nobles and perhaps 10 000 of his army lay dead by the evening of the 9th. The concert will have a historical backdrop of nearby Norham Castle and in the distance, over the border in Scotland, Ladykirk Church will be floodlit. The castle was subjected to a five day siege before the battle, which resulted in it being taken by the Scottish army.

Scocha

The line-up for Folk Rockin 4 Flodden includes headliners Scottish folk/rock band Scocha, and past members of the iconic English folk band Lindisfarne; Dave Hull-Denholm, Charlie Harcourt (who present 'The Alan Hull Songbook') and Steve Daggett. Other performers are Norham's own Derek Meins, Ronnie Hek & Co, traditional music from 'The Small Hall Band' and also a group of superb Northumbrian Pipers. www.scocha.co.uk www.facebook.com/pages/Lindisfarne/109717949046431 Lisa Johnson, of the organising committee, said: "Both sides of the border are well represented. Scocha are great because as well as being really popular they make reference to famous battles and Scottish history during their shows. Lindisfarne are their English equivalent and it’s great that Derek is coming up to perform as he’s a local lad who has done really well.” The concert runs from 6.30pm–11pm in the field opposite Norham Castle, just east of Norham village in Northumberland, and tickets are £20 per head for the 4 1/2 hours of top notch entertainment. Tickets are available from: www.borderevents.com/event/Folk-Rock-Flodden There will be quality food on sale including The Juicy Meat Company's famed hog roast and Geoff Allan's excellent Fish & Chips, plus 'Call The Bar' will have a well stocked bar to keep you suitably refreshed. But you can also bring your own picnic, complete with rugs/chairs although glass objects and alcohol cannot be brought onto the site. If you want to make the most of your trip to the area then camping/caravan pitches can be booked a short drive from the venue and there's also many good B&B's locally. Links to some sites below:

RSNO performs Moving Movies! - Classic film soundtracks for people on the move

Glasgow Airport was alive with the sound of music recently when Scotland’s national orchestra performed cherished music from the silver screen to Glasgow Airport’s many passengers.

RSNO Assistant Conductor, Jean-Claude Picard, Trombonist Juul Magnussen and Wizard of Oz characters from the Citizens Young Company : all photos by Neil Richardson

As part of the Airport’s 'Best of Scotland' event, the RSNO entertained travellers with musical excerpts from beloved movies The Wizard of Oz, E.T. and Star Wars, with the Orchestra being led for the first time by newly appointed RSNO Assistant Conductor, Jean-Claude Picard.

RSNO Assistant Conductor Jean-Claude Picard: "Performing my first public concert with the outstanding musicians of the RSNO was a memorable experience. The iconic music of these classic movies is surely known by everyone and means a lot to many, and to be able to share it in such a vibrant public space was a beautifully peculiar way to start my musical relationship with this country.”

Francois Bourienne, commercial director at Glasgow Airport: “For many people, Glasgow Airport is their first and last impression of Scotland and the RSNO’s live performance ensured thousands of passengers took away some very special memories of both Scotland and the airport.” “This is the third year in a row that we have worked with the RSNO as part of our Best of Scotland event which, in addition to creating a bit of theatre in the airport, showcases everything that is great about Scottish culture.” The Orchestra will be performing The Wizard of Oz complete with screening of the film and original vocals at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 19 October (3pm and 7.30pm), and The Music of John Williams on Saturday 8 March 2014 (7.30pm).

Celebrate Best of Scotland at Glasgow Airport : 5 August - 16 September Best of Scotland is Glasgow Airport’s annual festival showcasing a fantastic selection of Scotland’s finest products available in the airport. The festival also showcases the best of Scottish talent with various surprise acts taking place during the 6 week-long event. Exclusive offers running throughout the event include 3 for 2 on Arran Cheese, £5 off a range of Scottish whisky when you spend £75 or more at World Duty Free, unique Gilt Scottish gin cocktails and much more besides.

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE

Robin Downie

............ member profile: This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

"The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

The music of many contemporary composers is often described as groundbreaking, innovative or challenging. These are no doubt admirable qualities, and are certainly features much approved of by most music critics. But there is a large constituency not catered for by music of that description - musicians in amateur orchestras and choirs, or those who can play instruments or sing up to the standard of around Grades 6-8, and who would like to try new music, which is manageable with their skills, and not unpleasant for their families as they practise. Robin Downie's music is of that kind, perhaps describable as contemporary domestic with a slight Scottish flavour. Robin's main career has been as a philosopher, holding the post of Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University, and his philosophy of music is that we are hard-wired to understand both language and music with a certain grammar. His music is structured by this grammar, although its contrapuntal textures, and a desire for occasional special harmonic effects, require many grammatical lapses! His works consist of songs, music for piano solo, for piano and violin, for violin solo and violin duet, and for brass. There is also choral music, some performed at the Cathedral in Imo State, Nigeria; performances of other works have been by brass players from members of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Texas, by Glasgow University Chapel Choir, by Stirling University Choir and by professional chamber players at university and other recitals. CDs and sheet music of the works are available from the Scottish Music Centre.

http://scottishmusiccentre.com/robin_downie/ www.scottishmusiccentre.com : https://twitter.com/scottishmusic : www.facebook.com/scottishmusiccentre The Scottish Music Centre currently supports in excess of 100 composer, group/small business and corporate members. Offering a wealth of advantages, initiatives include the bi-monthly Composers' Digest and Exposed Melodies podcast series, annual Composition Marathon, regular networking events and notification of valuable opportunities, extensive publicity and increased correspondence with national companies, chamber ensembles, soloists and festivals.

‘Lamp House Music launch their autumn term as their mentored youth bands open main stage at Audio Soup’

Vacant Life

Lamp House Music, East Lothian's rehearsal and teaching studio based in Haddington, have launched their new term of lessons, with classes due to start the weekend they bring youth acts to Audio Soup on 31 August. They have announced a new group class in recorder plus additional classes in vocals, ukulele, drums and guitar to meet popular demand. These classes compliment their already existing timetable of lessons for adults and children, which has seen the music-dedicated service go from strength to strength. Lamp House Music’s lessons promise small group sizes, experienced and enthusiastic tutors teaching high-quality lessons all within a fun and friendly environment. The term begins as Lamp House Music takes several musicians from its 'Mentored Youth Project', held over Christmas/New Year and introduces them to a festival stage. Callum Maguire of Lamp House Music said, “This sums up what Lamp House Music is all about; we provide fantastic music lessons to give people the skills to follow their aspirations, through our youth projects we’ve helped nurture the talent, creativity and confidence of young people. And then thanks to our relationships within the music industry and local community four of our mentored bands will have the experience of performing live at a large-scale music festival! We are very proud of these young musicians, and they should be even more so of themselves.“

THE HOLY GHOSTS live - 31 august @ voodoo rooms, edinburgh

The Holy Ghosts are an up and coming country rock 'n' roll band based in Edinburgh, they are doing an end of festival party at The Voodoo Rooms on 31 August with support from The River 68's; The Jackals; Daniel McGeever & The Message. The Holy Ghosts, performed for the first time in January 2012 to spread the word of the rock n roll gospel. They are a five-piece band playing Rock n' Roll/Country and a dash of the Blues. Often drawing comparisons with that of the Stones during their Exile on Main Street era, they draw inspiration from the 60s and 70s and apply a modern twist. Performing live remains the groups forte with the use of razor sharp guitars, wailing harmonica, honky tonk piano, spine tingling three part harmonies and charismatic stage presence make them an exciting live performance. They recently picked up 'Best Newcomer' at this years SAMA 2013 and have also performed live on BBC ALBA for their RAPAL TV show. Their debut album is to be released winter 2013 with 4 accompanying music videos. The band released their first EP 'Devil On Your Side' in March 2012 (Owen Morris - Oasis, The View) and have recently released their second EP Voodoo Shakedown with Scottish producer Garry Boyle (Broken Records, The Banana Sessions and Stanley Odd). UNIVERSAL YOU :

ep - ‘MMXIII - I ’

release date - out now : www.facebook.com/universalyou

Joesoap Records has released the latest EP from Universal You, MMXIII- I, available now on all major download platforms. MMXIII - I is a 4 track EP that includes two covers and two original tracks. The headline track is “Love Song” which was originally recorded by Scottish legends Simple Minds way back in 1981. Universal You has combined their own potent and diverse musical DNA to create a throbbing dance track with razor sharp guitar hooks and singer Gulzhan’s sensual vocals, while still retaining the mystic of Simple Minds original with its 80’s European electronic undertones. “If Madonna, Calvin Harris and John Frusciante jammed the night away in a hot Berlin basement nightclub this is how they might sound” You can listen to all 4 tracks here: https://soundcloud.com/ paul-finnie/sets/ep-mmxiii-i/s-FndXN Since releasing two rock influenced albums the band has undergone a major transformation both in personnel and musical direction. Existing now as a two-piece Universal You has finally followed their long held ambition to find a groove on the dance floor and in doing so has allowed their guitar riffs to organically grow and blend with their affection of the current dance and club scenes. As visual support for the EP the promotional video for “Love Song” features an erotic mix of gold and silver painted bodies echoing dance moves of the 80’s. The video was produced by Eyal Gamili who is an independent Israeli videographer and artist in Tel Aviv. http://youtu.be/ ko4ETOLCGcI
