Capercaillie's Karen Matheson to perform with Fèis Cèilidh Trailers at Loch Lomond Karen Matheson - the voice of one of Scotland's most successful bands, Capercaillie - will return to her roots on 17 July when she has agreed to perform alongside some of the most talented young people from two of Scotland's 44 Fèisean (Gaelic tuition festivals) at a special performance with her own band at Loch Lomond Shores Sealife Auditorium. The concert aims to promote Gaelic music within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, highlighting opportunities for youngsters and showcasing the young talent that is emerging from the area.
Karen Matheson
Sean Connery described Karen as having "a throat surely touched by the hand of God" while Billboard magazine declared her to be "the finest Gaelic singer alive today". But this tells only part of the remarkable story of a singer at the forefront of the Celtic music scene. Hailing from Taynuilt, with strong Barra connections, Karen has never forgotten her roots and remains inspired by the traditional Gaelic songs with which she grew up and with which she has mesmerized audiences throughout the world during her career. Karen was awarded an OBE in 2006, an astonishing achievement to add to her award of "Best Gaelic singer" at the inaugural Scottish Trad Music Awards - just two of many plaudits earned from a career which began with her performing as a child in her local village hall on the West coast of Scotland. As a solo performer, Karen has been involved in various collaborative projects including the award-winning BBC series “Transatlantic Sessions”, where she recorded tracks with Emmylou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters, Nanci Griffith, Rufus Wainright and a host of respected musicians. Her concerts at festivals across the world regularly attract full houses.

HI~Arts is to be 'wound up' and will go into liquidation Sadly the news broke this week that HI~Arts, who have down so much for music in the north of Scotland, is having to wind up its business and will be going into liquidation. The HI~Arts board published the following statement: "At a meeting held on 27 June the Board of HI~Arts, the cultural development agency for the Highlands and Islands, formally resolved that the company should be wound up, and that William Young CA should be commissioned to implement the winding up and be authorised to organise the meetings of members and creditors necessary to appoint a Liquidator. As noted in the previous Board statement of 5th April 2013, both HIE and Creative Scotland provided transition funding for HI~Arts for the financial year 2012/13, but subsequent strategic and structural changes in both organisations have meant that past funding arrangements would not be continued beyond the first quarter of 2013/14 . During 2012/13 the Board and staff thoroughly examined the potential for restructuring the company on a more commercial basis, which followed on from several years of preparation by the Company to compete for the renewal of existing contracts, but concluded that, given the company’s continuing obligations and the non-availability of appropriate contracts for tender, this model was not viable. Two project staff have transferred to a new organisation delivering a programme previously operated by the Company , but the remainder of HI~Arts’s staff are being made redundant, in line with the notices of redundancy which the Board had issued 12 weeks’ previously, and the company’s various services and programmes will cease with immediate effect."

HI~Arts provided a range of development and support services for those working in the fields of the arts and heritage, across the Highlands and Islands, and also elsewhere in Scotland. The HI~Arts music programme midas led to the development of the annual showcase festival goNORTH which is now ran by Creative Highland and supported the early stages of what became the Tartan Heart Festival and RockNess.

The Border's renowned String Jam Club is moving Galashiels' String Jam Club, which has brought so much superb music to the Scottish Borders, is moving from its home for the last 16 years to a new venue in the autumn. Their present venue, The Salmon Inn, is converting its upstairs into letting rooms leaving no space for the existing function room. The club's next gig in the Salmon Inn on 13 July, their Fourth Annual Melting Pot, will also now take the form of a big leaving party with so many magical musical memories over the years. It’s going to be a historic night and a fond farewell! For The String Jam Club, it may be end of an era but it’s certainly not the end for the club. It's the beginning of an exciting fresh new start. The club is currently talking to potential new venues and plan a big relaunch in November, when they will continue to put on monthly events in their new home with top headline artists and a continuing significant contribution from local and young musicians to which they are committed. Organiser Allie Fox said: "Our intimate friendly ambience is what makes us stand out as "the Borders haven of acoustic music" and that will never change. We are all sad to be moving on as The Salmon has been our home for 16 years and the pub has been 100% behind us every step of the way. We couldn’t have hoped for better hosts. We'd like to publicly thank the Calder family: Helen, Ian, Michelle and Pam for looking after us so well from Day One and for giving us so much support over many years. They have been an integral part of the String Jam family. But times move on and circumstances change, commercial decisions have to be made, and we wish them all the very best in their new venture."

Lanarkshire's Own ‘Wall Of Sound' Ready For Business A newly refurbished recording studio and rehearsal space has opened in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, offering a unique range of facilities to help budding artists. As well as having the ability to cut their own records, musicians and singers can also access professional voice coaching and be given advice in photography, marketing and media training to help get their material noticed. Cave Wall Studios (formerly known as Soundwave Studios) has been completely rennovated to offer acoustically enhanced surroundings and upgraded equipment including new mic stands, drum heads on the kits and a brighter, more creative space for artists. As well as state-of-the art facilities for professional, or would-be professional, talent another innovation will see the studio open for ‘pop parties' where enthusiastic amateurs can record their own lead vocals on tracks which will be turned into bespoke CDs. Cave Wall's new music accessory store will also be open every day from noon to midnight, stocking everything from spare strings, picks and straps to drumsticks and cables. The studio is managed by David Lang who has worked with names such as; Stuart Fletcher, from platinum selling 90s band The Seahorses; and Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, who also played and co-wrote "Grace" and "Mojo Pin" with the late Jeff Buckley. David said, "The studios offer musicians and singers the complete package. Not only do they get well-equipped recording and rehearsal space, but also professional help in the early stages to help them make the most of their talent and get them noticed. The facility is a wonderful addition to the music scene and I'm sure many future stars will benefit from receiving such high quality assistance." Cave Wall Studios is teaming up with sister company Lucid PR, Events and Marketing, based in Inverness, to provide media training and marketing advice to artists. Peter Kane, Lucid's Client Director, said "Traditionally studios have just been large spaces where bands went to record some tracks and little else. We wanted to offer something more by giving them room to rehearse in comfort as well as offering support in a number of important areas in which they may need help." Local bands and artists pulled together recently to help open Cave Wall Studios with a bang at their launch party in the Tudor Hotel, Airdrie. Steven Warnock, Crafty Bison, Scott Cowie, Jamie Syme, Gia Valentina and Mark Rooney were just some of the acts to entertain the crowd. After a successful opening the team are looking forward to getting down to work with bookings filling up fast already.

Watch Madeleine Dow on YouTube: http://youtu.be/x7vo3fY-OoA
This is without doubt one of the String Jam Club's most popular events and now in its fourth year. As the final gig in the Salmon the range of music will reflect the club’s eclectic history and will include some of the many outstanding acts who have performed in their legendary open mics over the years, including notables such as singer-songwriter Angus Gunn and blues trio Blue to the Bone. Packed full of exciting, original contemporary music by the cream of Borders musicians, their headliner is talented local diva Madeleine Dow. Her haunting smoky tones, distinctive songwriting and compelling stage presence have stood out amongst the many who have performed on the String Jam stage over the years and they are delighted that she is the focus for this year’s event. String Jam Club audiences are discerning listening people who really appreciate good music, and that’s why Madeleine has always been so well received at the club and why ‘The Melting Pot’ has become a very popular annual event.

Rachel Sermanni @ Lemon Tree, Aberdeen words by Emma Cunningham : live photo by Debbie Park
Rachel Sermanni is an inspirational musician who really makes you sit up and listen to her quirky style. I first came across Rachel in Glasgow at the press launch for goNORTH in early 2011, now living in Aberdeen I noticed she was playing the City's intimate venue The Lemon Tree and I jumped at the opportunity to see her again. Rachel brings something very special to the stage, which you rarely see, it’s a privilege to watch her perform and the whole world should know of her existence! Rachel had invited two upand-coming musicians to perform before her set. Cara Mitchell, a young Aberdonian singersongwriter has so far had a short yet explosive career since she started off gigging in her home town she struck gold recently supporting Emile Sande at two sold out performances in April and had supported Rachel previously too. I had never come across Cara before, I instantly noticed that her voice and song writing skills take you away to another world. She has a skill of taking a situation and turning it into the most fantastic song by capturing the mood and essence through her lyrics in an upbeat and fun style, which instantly puts a smile on your face. If you Cara Mitchell : photo by Ruth Sutherland find yourself in Aberdeen on 2 August get yourself to The Tunnels and see this girl in action. Her latest single Pick up the Pace/ Paint them Red can be downloaded now from itunes. Rachel’s second support act, Nova Scotia’s very own Mo Kenney dominated the stage and made the audience hang on her very word. Her wicked Canadian sense of humour and personal anecdotes, along with her fantastic song writing skills really was the whole package. She has impressed all the right people back home, having written my favourite of the night, ‘Deja Vu’, along with the industry’s great Joel Plaskett. Mo also made the itunes best singer songwriters list in 2012. Aberdeen fell in love with Mo that night and I hope she’ll be back with us soon. Mo Kenney

The girl of the hour, Rachel Sermanni, didn’t fail to deliver. Musicianship to Rachel appears to be completely innate, when she performs she becomes the music; the way she moves, her facial expressions, everything about her creates the most unique, special and fun performance. Her love, her passion and her enthusiasm for what she does are contagious. This was something I had only witnessed growing up watching the Scottish Borders' musician Innes Watson, the same awe and allurement I had experienced in my teens was rediscovered watching Rachel and ‘her girls’ - 4 musicians and more importantly friends who added extra flare to the music, performance and fun on stage. Rachel tried to engage in “banter” with the crowd but as I have noticed since moving to Aberdeen, Aberdonian’s aren’t you’re stereotypical rowdy Scottish audience but a tad more subdued and aren’t accustomed to 'shouting out in class'! But it was evident she won them over. Her version of Ae Fond Kiss and the anecdote she gave about Rabbie writing this song went down a storm, along with her other numbers including ‘The Frog’ and her encore ‘Eggshells’ (which can be downloaded for free from her website). From eavesdropping to the many social clusters it was apparent that many had been to Rachel’s previous performance at The Lemon Tree and had brought their friends along this time around. This Scottish folk chick’s fan base is snowballing, and as one of Britain’s hardest working musicians it won’t be long until she makes it onto your ipod too. www.facebook.com/RachelSermanni www.facebook.com/CaraMitchellMusic www.facebook.com/mokenneymusic

LLOYD JAMES FAY The Black River Chronicles Album : cd / download Release Date: 10 June
Having already caught the critics’ ear (Radio 1, Channel 4) as frontman of acclaimed Scottish alternative rock quartet Thula Borah, Lloyd James Fay embarks on his first foray into solo territory with the highly anticipated The Marshals' sound can loosely be described as ‘country rock', although the power pop hooks of "Two's release of his beguiling debut LP, The Black River Company" and the Stones-y swagger of "You Can Have Chronicles.
