In addition to the evening events at the Town Hall there are free activities taking place around Aberfeldy including acoustic sets in the town square (Saturday) and a spectacular firework display on Sunday. This year also sees poetry joining the day time activities with a wide range of performances taking place at the newly restored Birks Cinema (Saturday). 2013 sees the return of the local artisan market on Saturday and welcomes a vintage market on Sunday guest curated by Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea. The 2013 Aberfeldy Festival is set to be bigger and better than ever with an eclectic mix of the best of alternative music and arts“. The Aberfeldy Festival is the brain child of local artist and lead singer of Star Wheel Press, Ryan Hannigan. He contacted Ian Rankin on Twitter when the novelist named their debut album, Life Cycle of a Falling Bird, as his album of the year. Rankin was thrilled to come on board in 2011 to curate the burgeoning arts festival, and has continued his involvement in the Aberfeldy Festival to this day.

Celtic Connections is delighted to announce that Del Amitri, with a cast of original members and even the original crew, will be performing as part of the festival on 24 January in the brand new SSE Hydro. Arguably Glasgow’s best-loved outfit from that golden generation of Scottish bands who emerged in the 1980s, Del Amitri take to the city’s newest and biggest stage for their first UK show in over a decade, not to mention their Celtic Connections debut, which also launches a 12-date nationwide tour. Thirty years on from their debut single ‘Sense Sickness’, lead vocalist and songwriter Justin Currie promises “a retrospective sweep of our entire output, from indie art-pop through folktinged balladry to hairy Brit-rock chuggery,” spanning a career that’s included 15 Top 40 singles and four Top 10 albums, among them the iconic ‘Nothing Ever Happens’ and the million-selling Change Everything. Matching irresistible melodic heart with compellingly incisive lyrics, Currie and co-founder Iain Harvie, together with Andy Alston, Kris Dollimore and Ashley Soan, are also joined tonight by Airdrie contemporaries The Big Dish, who staged their own triumphant reunion at Celtic Connections 2012. Tickets are now on sale and are available online at www.celticconnections.com or over the phone on 0141 353 8000. They will also be available to buy in person at Glasgow’s Concert Halls. Celtic Connections 2014 runs from Thursday 16 January – Sunday 2 February and comprises a wealth of concerts, ceilidhs, talks, workshops, free events and late night sessions taking place over 18 days. Various venues across Glasgow are utilised for Celtic Connections 2014 such as the Main Auditorium in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, O2 ABC, The Tron, Òran Mór, The Mitchell Theatre, City Halls, Kelvingrove, St Andrews in the Square and the Old Fruitmarket will all play host to Celtic Connections events. Celtic Connections 2014 will also use the brand new SSE Hydro, Scotland’s biggest ever music venue. The festival boosts the local economy and tourism industry in the normally quiet postfestive period. Celtic Connections enjoyed an extremely successful 20th festival in 2013, with over £1m ticket sales and attendances topping 100,000. Celtic Connections continues to have an international appeal and enhance Glasgow’s reputation as a major tourist destination. Fans visited from all corners of the globe to experience the best in traditional, folk, roots, world and indie music, from Mali to the USA and Canada, as well as across Europe and around the UK. In 2013 Celtic Connections saw an increase in visitors from outwith Scotland, with 14.6% of the audience visiting from the rest of the UK and 4% coming from overseas. 44% of festival fans accompanied their visit to Celtic Connections with an overnight stay, a few stayed with friends but the majority at 69% stayed in a Hotel or Guest House or B&B. An impressive 70% of visitors stated that attending Celtic Connections was their sole or main reason for visiting Glasgow and 77% said they had also attended Celtic Connections in 2012. A fantastic 99.8% said they would come back to the festival in the future. Festival fans attended an average of 4.7 events.

Blas 2013 hailed an outstanding success Highlands : 5-13 September 2014 : www.blas-festival.com Blas 2013’s packed week of Gaelic and Highland cultural events came to a thrilling finale at the weekend with a series of events across the area playing to enthusiastic audiences. The highlight of Saturday night’s closing finale at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness was the 30th anniversary celebration of one of Gaelic music’s modern institutions, supergroup Capercaillie, who performed to a full house with Seamus Begley & Jim Murray and Calum MacCrimmon, who had composed one of this year’s festival’s two new commissions, reprising a section of his acclaimed work, “Boraraig”. The pan-Highland festival once again attracted significant audiences and took a foray into Argyll and the Western Isles with notable success likely to be repeated as the event reaches a significant milestone next year with the completion of its first decade.
