Man behind the music, Ross Wilson has rightly won huge praise for live, sell-out performances including joyous sessions for the BBC. And latest album, And Lo! The Bird is On The Wing has thrilled fans and critics alike with its beguiling mix of flawless folk, jazz, soul and country sounds with Celtic hints, plus John Martyn and Van Morrison vocal shades for good measure. Blue Rose Code’s impressive songbook has caught the ear of many, including star Scots actor, Ewan McGregor, who guested with vocals on one And Lo! track. Perth : 29-31 July : www.southernfriedfestival.co.uk Southern Fried tickets @ www.horsecross.co.uk/whats-on Three UK music greats come together to showcase their love of Americana in this year’s Southern Fried Festival. Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack & Andy Fairweather Low will make their Scottish debut in an ultra-rare trio show as a climax to Perth’s festival of American roots music with other headliners confirmed as Imelda May, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Gretchen Peters.

pathos of Billie Holiday and the swagger of Wanda Jackson, Imelda took the plunge and went solo in 2006 with raw, fiery rockabilly at the heart of her wide-ranging sound. Since then, the rise and rise of Imelda May has been unstoppable with sold out tours, guest spots with Jools Holland and Jeff Beck, platinum records in Ireland and a UK Number 1 album. Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack & Andy Fairweather Low perform their vast combined catalogue of greatest hits heavily influenced by their love of American R&B, soul and country, albeit with a strong British accent in Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 31 July.

More acts are still to be announced. Festival director Andy Shearer said: “We’re delighted with the strength and breadth of this year’s headline acts. Mary Chapin Carpenter is one of the few remaining big name songwriters on the Americana scene who hasn’t yet performed at Southern Fried so we’re very pleased to secure an appearance from her. Nick Lowe is another artist we’ve been chasing pretty much every year since Southern Fried began and to not only book him this year but in the company of two real heavyweight musicians in Paul Carrack and Andy Fairweather Low feels like a real coup and something our audience will get really excited about. Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s annual festival of new music celebrates 10 years Glasgow : 3-6 May : www.rcs.ac.uk Plug@10 tickets @ www.rcs.ac.uk/box-office

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland celebrates a decade of new music in Plug@10 with the world premiere of a new opera, 37 new works by student composers as well as some classics by guest composer, Sir James MacMillan. Filmed on the set of the BBC’s River City, the 10 minute opera, Ūhte, composed by student composer Henry McPherson, tells the story of 3 magicians and the silence where magic was once found. The opera will be screened at the opening concert of Plug on May 3. Conducted by the inspirational Martyn Brabbins, the opera is a truly interdisciplinary collaboration, featuring students of the RCS Opera School, with prosthetics, props and wardrobe created by RCS Productions students and filmed by RCS Screen students. Throughout the four-day festival, RCS will present a Plug to remember with visiting artists, competition winners, late night concerts and the return of some of Plug’s original artists. The opening concert features the combined forces of Red Note Ensemble and MusicLab, featuring new works by four young composers, including the winner of the prestigious Craig Armstrong Prize. The 10th anniversary celebrations continue with two concerts from one of the great names in contemporary music, Ensemble Modern, who make their RCS debut on May 5. This Germanbased ensemble has been at the forefront of new music since it began back in 1980. Ensemble Modern bring Plug to a close with a final concert on May 6, Ensemble Modern does Ensemble Modern.

HebCelt tickets @ www.hebceltfest.com/booking/

The award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival’s drive to further enhance its green credentials will see it play a pioneering role in the use of electric cars. HebCelt, which will be held from 13-16 July in Stornoway in the island of Lewis, is to be the first Scottish festival to partner with E-Car Club to provide a fleet of vehicles discounted for music fans to use during its event.

(£25) and the ability to take cars as and when required at £5.50 per hour. Chris Morris, E-Car Managing Director and cofounder, said: “As one of the most progressive and sustainable music festivals there is, we're absolutely delighted to be supporting HebCelt 2016. “The ten electric, pay-as-you-go vehicles we have recently launched around Stornoway provide an excellent solution for low cost, convenient, environmentally-friendly transport, and we’re looking forward to demonstrating this forward-thinking model to festival-goers over the four days of HebCelt.”

acts already confirmed include Julie Fowlis, Astrid, King Creosote, John McCusker and Breabach. The festival is regarded as one of the greenest events in the world due to its efforts on recycling and protecting its environment. It is committed to decreasing its carbon emissions by 14 per cent by 2017 and the Hebridean Celtic Festival Trust has drawn up a series of long-term aims on the sustainable use of resources, reducing emissions and raising awareness of environmental matters among volunteers, suppliers, contractors, artists and festival goers.

Charging points in the Outer Hebrides are at the ferry terminals at Tarbert, Leverburgh, Lochmaddy, Eriskay and Castlebary; council offices at Stornoway and Balivanich; and Lews E-Car, the UK’s first entirely electric pay-per-use Castle College and Shell Street Car Park in car club, will have nine Renault ZOE hatchbacks Stornoway and Lionel School in Ness. and a Renault Kangoo van based at Car Hire Car Hire Hebrides, which operates the e-cars on Hebrides in Stornoway during the four-day the island, is an annual sponsor of HebCelt. festival.

In 2013 HebCelt was hailed as one of the greenest festivals in the world after being the only Scottish event to receive an Outstanding award from environmental campaign group A Greener Festival. In addition, it was shortlisted in the Greener Festival category in the UK Festival Awards.

The cars are capable of 70-90 miles on a charge This year’s HebCelt will be headlined by Runrig, Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Hayseed Dixie. Other and users will have free access to ten charging points in Lewis and Harris.

HebCelt Director Caroline Maclennan said: “We are naturally delighted to partner with E-Car Club. Their packages provide festival-goers with a really flexible range of offers and access to their fleet of electric cars. “This will provide festival visitors the opportunity to take in as much as time permits of the wider natural beauty of the island in an environmentally responsible manner, which fits well with our aims to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.” The system works on a membership basis and cars should be booked in advance. During the festival the cars can be hired for £40 per day, with E-Car membership reduced to £15 (usually a total of £90). A four-day hire will cost £150, including membership, (usually £230), while a flexi option will provide half price membership

OCTOBER Ullapool Guitar Festival Ullapool 7-9 October So why is the UGF so special? Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands. www.ullapoolguitarfestival.com
