Creative Scotland’s Head of Music, Alan Morrison
The opening weekend celebrates the Beltane Fire Festival on Calton Hill, marking May Day, the traditional start of summer. The finale weekend showcases the May Day Parade to the Scottish Parliament on Sat 6 May, as well as the May Day Social at McSorley's.
Music at Summerhall This year's music hub at Summerhall showcases The Soundhouse Organisation's music programme, which includes appearances from Dean Owens and Amy Geddes as Redwood Mountain: Transatlantic Crossings as they build on The Book of American Folk Songs by archivist Alan Lomax, Ireland's Connla who are taking the trad world by storm and the UK debut of American Roots duo The Lowest Pair. Thousands of music fans descended on Glasgow over the weekend of 2426 March to take part in the multitude of shows that made up the BBC 6 Music Festival.

This day event offered a feast of music and panel interviews across 2 rooms which kicked off in Tramway 4 with a hilarious 5 Live’s Fighting Talk including a panel of The Maccabees Felix White, Liz Kershaw, former footballer, pundit and music fan Pat Nevin and comedian Ian Stirling.
Fans clamoured to get tickets when they went on sale with them selling out in minutes, with the lure of names such as Depeche Mode and The Jesus and One of the biggest draws of the day was for the Stuart Maconie interview with Edwyn Collins with Mary Chain headlining. fans queuing to get in an hour before hand to secure one of the very limited seats. Tramway 1 hosted Chemikal Underground founder and former Delgados singer Emma Pollock who was delighted to have the opportunity to be playing “round the corner from her house”, followed by Temples and Sinkane, before a soulful and very funky DJ set by Craig Charles which included him climbing on top of the decks to air-guitar.
Deadpan Ron, with slicked back hair, dressed in white shirt and black tie, never showed one moment of emotion throughout the whole set then got up, casually unbuttoned his sleeves, rolled them up and scissor danced across the stage, before re-buttoning and returning to the keys as if nothing had happened. Cue riotous applause.
It seemed some of the crowd were unaware of the interview that was about to occur on the stage (moved from the much smaller Tramway 4), as after Charles was replaced on stage by Mark Radcliffe, the DJ was heckled for a good few minutes with funk fans demanding “one more tune!” as the decks were rolled off. “If you want to listen to another record go 6 Music playlist favourite ‘This Town Aint Big Enough’ and stick it on at home,” he responded. and new tracks from forthcoming album The day ended with the epitome of punk John Lydon ‘Hippopotamus’ were crowd favourites. being interviewed by Radcliffe. First Artists Announced For King Tut’s Stage at TRNSMT Glasgow :: 7-9 July :: www.trnsmtfest.com Buy tickets @ www.ticketmaster.co.uk/trnsmt
Some of the best under the radar talent has been announced for TRNSMT, taking place at Glasgow Green across 7-9 July. The King Tut’s Stage powered by Utilita Energy will play host to the country’s favourite new artists, just as the iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut has done for the past 25+ years in Scotland. Honne, The LaFontaines, Sundara Karma, Tom Grennan, Saint Motel, The Amazons, Clean Cut Kid, Declan McKenna, Fickle Friends, and The Vryll Society will play Glasgow’s new festival this July. London electronic duo Honne released their debut album Warm on a Cold Night in the summer of 2016 and since then, it has been a quick ascent to the top. Following the release of two consecutive EPs in 2014 and 2015, Honne have crafted their live shows at festivals across the country including BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. American indie pop band Saint Motel bring the California vibes to Glasgow Green in July as the quartet take to the stage. Saturday night headliners The LaFontaines, bring their unique blend of rock, pop and hip-hop to the TRNSMT party on 8 July. Frontman Kerr Okan’s lyrical
brilliance often provides commentary on current youth culture and having already sold out iconic venues such as Glasgow’s Barrowlands, there is no doubt The LaFontaines will receive a rapturous homecoming from the TRNSMT crowd. They released their new single Release the Hounds in late 2016 and after almost 4 years of breaking records and pushing boundaries, these Scottish titans show no sign of stopping. English indie rock band Sundara Karma only formed in 2015 but are already making waves in the music scene, with a captivating frontman, modern indie rock and bold pop anthems there is no doubt these young rockers are set for big things. Liverpudlian four-piece Clean Cut Kid formed in 2014, spending the time since honing their indie-pop sound permeated with unabashedly romantic lyrics and infectious melodies. Brighton indie pop band Fickle Friends are no stranger to festivals, having performed at 53 across the UK and Europe. The quintet’s vocalist Natassja Shiner combines graceful melodies with escalating guitar loops and bittersweet lyrics with upbeat pop songs. The Vryll Society bring their rhythmic thunder to Glasgow Green and are sure to go down well with a Glasgow crowd. The Vryll Society’s psychedelic jams merged with ethereal, accessible pop makes the band an exciting new discovery.
The LaFontaines :: www.facebook.com/thelafontainesmusic
Bedford-born, London-based singersongwriter Tom Grennan’s first taste of fame came as a guest vocalist on the Chase & Status track When It All Goes Wrong. A BBC Radio 1 Hottest Record listing, BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge and Later…with Jools Holland appearances and the release of his Something in the Water EP in late 2016 have allowed the 21 year-old to showcase his gritty, soulful vocals alongside syncopated storytelling. English rockers The Amazons entered 2017 on a musical high. Bringing their arena-sized brand of indie rock to the King Tut’s Stage, their raucous burst of energy will
surely be reciprocated by the famous Glasgow audience. At just 18 years old, Declan McKenna has already won the Glastonbury Festival Emerging Talent search. Currently working with James Ford, producer of Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode and Florence and the Machine, on his debut album, McKenna’s brand of socially-conscious indie pop has rightfully portrayed him as a youthful voice with something to say.

Orkney Folk Festival Orkney 25-28 May
One of Scotland’s longest-running folk festivals, celebrating its 35th outing in 2017, the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most prolific events in the Scottish and UK folk calendars, and one of the highlights of Orkney’s diary of community events. An entirely voluntary run event, the festival annually attracts artists from all corners of the folk world - from leading international names to up and coming fresh faces - to Stromness, in Orkney’s West Mainland, for four days of concerts, ceilidhs, clubs, sessions, talks and craic. Artists and audiences are welcomed by and into Orkney’s own thriving folk scene, with Orcadian artists providing around two thirds of the festival programme. Line-up announced across December-March, with tickets on sale in April, around six weeks ahead of the event. This is relatively close to the festival itself, as the festival consists of around 35 individually programmed and ticketed events, rather than offering all-in-one day or weekend tickets. Artists visiting the festival perform on several occasions, though, offering a number of chances to catch them over the weekend.
