The Edinburgh International Harp Festival is an annual celebration and gathering of musical talents. Every Easter it brings harpists of all ages from across the globe together to rub shoulders with you, the audience. In this year of Homecoming, the festival turns the spotlight on the host nation and welcome home some of Scotland’s most travelled harpers. Their concert series features: Catriona McKay, Maeve Gilchrist, home from USA, ,Rachel Newton of The Shee, and The Duplets (Gillian Fleetwood and Fraya Thomsen). A special event, the Hall of the Chieftain, presented by John Purser, will feature some of Scotland’s most established harpers: Alison Kinnaird, Mary Macmaster and Patsy Seddon (aka Sileas) and Bill Taylor, originally from the US but very much at home here. They will perform, along with Allan MacDonald, Christine Primrose and Steve Byrne, spellbinding music from the 16th – 18th centuries. Coming from further afield are Siân James from Wales and Andrew LawrenceKing from Guernsey and this year’s special featured guest Edward Witsenburg from Holland as well as Eva Curth from Germany and Clotilde Trouillaud from Brittany. Pioneered by local musician Mairearad Green, with fantastic music and the most beautiful festival setting, this year’s Summer Isles Festival in Achiltibuie, which is under an hour from Ullapool, promises to be the best yet. The varied line up for 2014 includes new electro/techno band, Halcyon, featuring John Somerville, Barry Reid and Adam Sutherland; best known as members of lively supergroup Treacherous Orchestra. The boys pack a big punch with a mix of Electro/Techno/Big beat sounds alongside live instrumentation, vocal samples and bundles of raw energy. Hunter & the Bear features local front man Will Irvine and have been championed in Music Week as one of their unsigned bands of 2013, and have been hotly tipped by BBC Radio 2 as ‘One To Watch’ for 2014. They have been confirmed as main support for the legendary Eric Clapton on his UK Tour this year and they are now back in the studios recording their anticipated second EP due for release in the summer. The line up is completed by BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominees Rura with vocals from Adam Holmes; innovative harpist Rachel Newton (The Shee) with her wistful vocals, and the annual ceilidh dance set led by the festival’s very own Mairearad Green. The Mischa Macpherson Trio : www.mischamacphersontrio.com
The 2014 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners, The Mischa Macpherson Trio have been added to this year’s Orkney Folk Festival line-up.
Gatherin’, Saltfishforty, Orkney Folk: The Gathering, Hullion, The Driftwood Cowboys, No Soond, Broken Strings, and Fiona Driver and Graham Simpson, plus many more to be announced. Looking ahead to her return to Orkney, Mischa Macpherson said: “The three of us are so looking forward to coming to our very first Orkney Folk Festival! We’re buzzing with excitement as we've heard that it’s one of the best in Scotland - with great people, music and craic.
She continued: “We have a busy summer ahead, with a debut CD on the horizon and a UK wide tour, but we can’t wait to spend a weekend in The trio, featuring Mischa Macpherson alongside Conal McDonagh and Orkney. It’s such a beautiful location, and the perfect setting for a really Innes White, join an already bumper bill of acts visiting this year’s good and friendly folk festival. Conal and I stayed in Kirkwall for a week festival, which takes place between Thursday, 22 May, and Sunday, 25 in August last year, and the weather was glorious - but even if the sun May. Artistes from some eight countries and four continents are set to doesn't make an appearance this time I'm sure the good music and converge upon Stromness in just eight weeks, where they will be welcomed in equal, if not greater, numbers by Orkney’s own, thriving folk festival atmosphere will more than make up for it!” scene. Festival director, Bob Gibbon added: Mischa, Conal and Innes were awarded the national prize last month, at the star-studded BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, in London’s Royal Albert Hall, fending off competition from leading young groups from throughout the British Isles. Their prize came just a couple of weeks after winning a coveted Danny Kyle Award at the 2014 outing of Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival, kick-starting what looks set to be a great year for the group.
“With Mischa and Conal booked to come as part of the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail, we were very pleasantly surprised to discover that we already had two thirds of this year’s BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners heading our way.
“You could say that the obvious thing to do would be to invite Innes as well, and so have the full trio on the ground, but this year’s programme All three musicians are from Scotland’s Highlands and Islands. Mischa, a was already very much full to bursting, with the initial line-up announced harp player and Gaelic singer, is from Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, whilst in January – and that’s with adding in a couple of extra events too. With some juggling we have managed it, though, and so we are very much Conal and Innes are both from the mainland – guitarist Innes is from looking forward to welcoming literally the nation’s best young folk talent Dingwall, and Conal, a whistler and piper, is from Poolewe in Wester to this year’s festival.” Ross. In the midst of a summer full of festival and concert engagements, taking them throughout the UK and further afield, both Mischa and Conal were already booked to appear at the 32nd Orkney Folk Festival, as part of the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail. This group of five musicians – also featuring Orcadian Eric Linklater, as well as Perthshire musicians Jack McRobbie and Kim Carnie – toured nationally in 2013, including a few days in Orkney in mid-summer, and are set to reform specially for this year’s festival. Mischa and Conal will now appear in both groups across the four day weekend. The young players will appear in Orkney alongside fellow visitors Aoife O’Donovan, Dervish, Shooglenifty, Mànran, Madison Violet, Mairearad & Anna, The Beaton Sisters’ Band, Family Atlantica, SVER, the Mick West Trio, Paddy Callaghan’s Trio, Qristina & Quinn Bachand, the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail, the Pentlands Ceilidh Band and the Matthew Maclennan Dance Band.
