TIREE MUSIC FESTIVAL SELLS OUT IN RECORD TIME Tiree : 18-20 July : www.tireemusicfestival.co.uk Tickets for this year’s Tiree Music Festival have now sold out in record time - as festival organisers unveil a bigger-than-ever bill of performers. A sterling line up including Eddi Reader, Julie Fowlis, Sharon Shannon Big Band, Peatbog Faeries and Roddy Woomble & Band will perform on the Island of Tiree between 18-20 July to a 1500-strong crowd – three times the population of the island itself. News that the festival has sold out is the latest in a list of triumphs for Scotland’s ‘Best Small Festival’, which sold out of early bird tickets a starling 10 hours after they were released, forcing ticket lines to open earlier than planned. Festival organiser, Daniel Gillespie, said: “We are completely overwhelmed with the demand for this year’s festival and the fact that tickets have sold out before a complete line up has been released only highlights the incredible backing TMF has from both visitors and locals of Tiree. “With so many people spending extra days on Tiree around the festival it was a natural progression to add a 3rd day to the event. We are also very excited about introducing 2 new stages to the site that will be build on the incredible atmosphere of TMF”

Composer James MacMillan launches new festival : The Cumnock Tryst Cumnock (Ayrshire) : 2-5 October : www.thecumnocktryst.com

Composer James MacMillan has launched a new music festival, The Cumnock Tryst, which will take place in his home town of Cumnock in Ayrshire, in October. James MacMillan will be Artistic Director and violinist, Nicola Benedetti, also from Ayrshire, is to be the Patron of the Festival. It is hoped that The Cumnock Tryst will become an annual event with concerts in venues in and around the town. The programme will feature some of the finest, international classical artists, as well as music and musicians from different backgrounds both stylistically and socially. The Cumnock Tryst aims to make its strong commitment to the community at the heart of

all its activities, for instance involving young people at school and college, amateur choirs and local bands. James MacMillan says “My earliest musical experiences were of making music with friends, relatives, schoolmates and teachers in Cumnock. Because of these seminal experiences I have followed a life of music, composing and working with some of the most wonderful musicians of our time all over the world. Now I want to bring something of that back. I have participated in festivals, large and small, in many countries. In the last century two British composers have established festivals in towns that were dear to them. One was Benjamin Britten whose influence on me as a youngster was a beacon of inspiration. He established the festival in Aldeburgh. The other was Peter Maxwell Davies who has been a mentor and friend over the last few decades. He established the St Magnus Festival in Orkney. My memories of early St Magnus Festivals have lived with me and have been incubated in my mind these many years, as the germ of an idea which could be reborn here in Cumnock.

will be given by one of the finest choirs in the world and another event that weekend will be of immense significance to the thriving brass band world of Ayrshire and beyond.

Two strong traditions of musical life in Cumnock www.thecumnocktryst.com have been brass music and choral music and https://twitter.com/TheCumnockTryst these two strands will be running themes in The Cumnock Tryst. The opening concert in October www.facebook.com/thecumnocktryst

Stars take to Paisley stage for Gerry Rafferty tribute at 'Bring it all Home' festival A star-studded line-up led a powerful musical tribute to Paisley songwriting legend Gerry Rafferty during a unique event to honour the singer in his home town. Paisley Town Hall provided a spectacular setting as a spellbound capacity crowd was treated to an evening of Gerry’s greatest hits by his family, friends and fans. The show was the centerpiece of the week-long Bring it all Home festival inspired by Gerry’s songwriting legacy, which took place at various venues in Paisley. It took place on what would have been his 67th birthday - was directed and compered by his lifelong friend and collaborator Rab Noakes.

and other family members providing backing vocals on various songs. A 24-piece orchestra made up by members of the RSNO added an extra musical layer as songs spanning Gerry’s career – from his early Humblebums days through to his million-selling solo work - were reworked. The concert opened with the aptly-titled New Street Blues – inspired by his home town – with international hit such as Baker Street and Right Down the Line following. Between songs, the artists talked of how Gerry’s work had helped inspire theirs, with Rab Noakes adding a personal touch with the tale of how the pair had first met as up-and-coming musicians – introduced by Billy Connolly – back in 1969. Bring it all Home took place alongside a popular exhibition into Gerry’s life and work, which will run at Paisley Museum until 18 May.

The Renfrewshire-Council-supported-festival also featured a Celebration of Scottish Songwriting Show in Paisley Town Hall featuring Midge Ure, James Grant, Hamish Stuart and Karine Polwart. Each artist performed some of their own songs, plus other material from their Featured artists Barbara Dickson, Roddy Hart, Emma Pollock and Siobhan Wilson all took turns favourite Scottish performers, with words music as the lead singer, with Gerry’s daughter Martha from artists as diverse as Deacon Blue,

Frightened Rabbit, Cream and Robert Burns all featuring. Other artists to play over the week included Mary Gauthier, Paul Brady and Kathryn Williams, while there was a series of songwriting masterclasses designed to pass on tips to budding musicians. Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall said: “It was a wonderful occasion and there could be no more fitting setting for this festival than here in Gerry’s home town. “This was a great way for the people of Paisley to celebrate the life and work of one of the town’s greatest sons. “We are very proud of the town’s cultural and musical heritage and Gerry’s work takes its place at the forefront of that tradition.” The event was organised by Renfrewshire Council, with support from Homecoming Scotland, Creative Scotland and the Rafferty family.
