The talk show is hosted by the event’s co-organiser Olaf Furniss and his guests include veteran music journalist, Sylvia Patterson, who will be talking about her book 'I’m Not With The Band'. Along with Honeyblood frontwoman, Stina Tweeddale (and additional participants TBC), she will also take part in a discussion about how approaches to writing differ for song lyrics, books and comedy. “At Smash Hits, Q and NME, Sylvia interviewed the biggest acts of the past thirty years so will have some amazing stories to tell,” says Furniss. “It will also be fascinating to hear how she, Stina and the other guests approach their writing and how the process differs according to the art form.”

A full programme of live music in The Famous Spiegeltent helps you escape festival mayhem! Edinburgh :: 4-29 August :: www.spiegeltent.net Buy tickets @ www.outstandingtickets.com/whats-on

2016 sees the return to Edinburgh of the Grand Old Dame herself – The Famous Spiegeltent. After a few years sunning herself in southern climes, she returns in all her glory to the beautiful St Andrew Square Garden, Edinburgh, bringing with her everyone’s favourite Fringe icon – La Clique – Encore! The Famous Spiegeltent, owned and run by Spiegeltmaestro David Bates, is one of the original Belgian mirror tents, which has hosted

fabulous performers such as Marlene Dietrich since the 1920s. 2016 is her 21st Edinburgh birthday and she is celebrating with a wonderful programme of music, cabaret, family musicals, children’s shows, late night clubs and classic festival frivolity. There is a terrific evening music lineup for Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a series of sublime concerts by Peter Straker (one of the great voices of the British stage singing the songs of Jacques Brel), award winning chanteuse Christine Bovill with a brand new show, Christine Bovill’s Paris) and Parisian cabaret star Isabelle Georges, all of whom are perfectly at home in the greatest of all Salons of Kabaret. The former Cherish the Ladies lead vocalist Michelle Burke will be inviting you to Step into her (memorabilia-bedecked) Parlour and the 7 piece folkNroll band Holy Moly and the Crackers promise 3 nights of loud, funky fun. We are honoured to be presenting intimate live concerts by Australian indigenous singer songwriter Archie Roach - an extraordinarily gifted Australian artist with a truly visionary talent, whose voice springs from the broken heart of a broken nation, which only makes his

message of hope and love more powerful. Also from Australia, and also for only 2 nights is the incomparable bard Paul Kelly, who has provided the soundtrack for the lives of two generations of Australians. Paul usually plays in much bigger venues – in the intimacy of the Famous Spiegeltent this will be an unforgettable experience! In addition to the music programme, there will be a full funpacked programme throughout August including daytime award winning productions by Captivate Theatre (high calibre amateur theatre group for young people). Evenings will see the return home of La Clique with its dysfunctional collection of extraordinary new artists and family favourites, including scintiallating live band The Shuffle Club with singer Becc Sanderson, and the best in adult, genre-bending New Variety. The Famous Spiegeltent and the Spiegel family looks forward to welcoming you to St Andrew Square Garden. Famous forever and famous for fun!

In a voice rich with humanity, filled with joy, pain, love and longing, the multi award winning Aborigine singer songwriter Archie Roach traces the journey of his people, and gets to the heart of what it means to be human. He is one of Australia’s most treasured performers. His single – the powerfully emotional “Took the Children Away” – from his certified gold, double ARIA award winning debut album “Charcoal Lane” - won an international Human Rights Achievement Award (the first time ever awarded for a song). Edinburgh Fringe appearance for The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with Brubeck: An Incredible Jazz Legacy

the mns collection ….

Edinburgh :: 14 August :: www.snjo.co.uk Tickets @ www.thequeenshall.net/whats-on/shows/the-scottish-national-jazz-orchestra-brubeck-aug2016

As part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith presents Brubeck: An Incredible Jazz Legacy, featuring John Nugent on alto saxophone. The venue is Edinburgh's Queen's Hall on Sunday 14 August at 7:30pm. Dave Brubeck was an extraordinary musician who achieved enviable status as a jazz master and a household name. His familiar opening bars of Take Five were the soundtrack to sixties swing and midtwentieth century cool and although composed by saxophonist Paul Desmond, the tune not only made Dave Brubeck a familiar name but also changed perceptions of jazz as a niche art form. The internationally acclaimed Scottish National Jazz Orchestra led by saxophonist Tommy Smith returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to celebrate the timeless sound of Dave Brubeck and his jazz legacy. Joined by Canadian saxophonist John Nugent, they will together explore Brubeck’s extraordinary music, and pay tribute to a versatile composer and jazz master who remains loved and revered in equal measure.

works from the years immediately preceding its release, and the further re-invention that followed on subsequent recordings. During this period, Brubeck was in his prime as a jazz ambassador and a composer of increasing stature and these charts are a ringing endorsement of his vision, ingenuity and prowess.

The programme focuses upon the hugely successful work of Brubeck’s famous quartet, and their enthusiastic exploration of unusual time signatures. Brubeck’s conscious decision to delve into polyrhythmic experimentation and improvisational counterpoint was suitably rewarded with a millionselling jazz album in Time Out, and a lasting place in jazz history. Few, including Brubeck himself, envisaged making ambitious jazz that had such broad and enduring appeal.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra ranks amongst the world's top Big Bands and is a major force as an interpretive instrument with a flair for astonishing customizations. The programme includes an exotic vista re-imagined on Rising Sun from Impressions of Japan, a frantic vision of the Fast Life first described on Countdown: Time In Outer Space and a Brubeckinspired orchestration for saxophones of Paul Desmond's historic chorus on In Your Own Sweet Way as part of a brand new arrangement of a muchBrubeck brought warmth, intellect, energy and charm loved jazz standard. As one reviewer said to the art of jazz piano: while saxophonist Paul “The band cut the charts brilliantly - in particular, the Desmond consistently provided concise, clear and blend of the sax section on In Your Own Sweet Way lyrical musicianship. Together with drummer Joe truly an object lesson in voicing a section. One of Morello, and bassists Eugene Wright and Joe those rare moments when the Earth moves!” Benjamin, they created some of the most iconic modern jazz ever made.

The event is being presented in partnership with music hub 57 North and will be free but ticketed. APA Chief Executive Jane Spiers said: “Our True North Fringe lineup perfectly complements the concert schedule across the festival and we’re delighted to be offering such a varied range of performances. Our Fringe sessions

have a particular focus on singer-songwriters, with a series of relaxed, intimate gigs in such wonderful settings as the Maritime Museum and Roof Garden. We’ve really built on the success of last year’s inaugural True North and this year’s festival promises to take the city by storm. “We’re delving deeper with our panel discussion and songwriting masterclass to really explore and appreciate the influences of women in music and the role of music in everyday life. Our workshop with the incredibly talented Fiona Bevan is a fantastic chance for aspiring songwriters, both local and from across the country, to pick up tips that could send them on their way to becoming the next big thing. “Here at APA we have so much experience in putting on concerts that make a great and lasting impression on our audiences – and My First Gig gives families the chance to let their little ones engage with music in the same way, in a safe, fun environment. " The full festival lineup includes an opening concert at HMT on Thursday 22 September from iconic soulstress and Brit Award-nominee Laura Mvula. Former Pulp and Longpigs member Richard Hawley will take over HMT on the Friday evening, while Mercury award-nominated King Creosote plays the Tivoli Theatre on the Saturday. On Sunday HMT will play host to a special Kate Bush celebration concert entitled Running Up That Hill - featuring a bill of top contemporary talent paying tribute to one of the most iconic songwriters and performers of our time. This year’s festival is supported by EventScotland, a team within VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.
