Glasgow Americana has ten shows lined up for this year’s five-day festival that gets under way on 4 October.
Kelly of Big Big Country Festivals’ fame. To date more than 140 acts have performed at Glasgow Americana, attracting more than 7,000 music-loving fans. The CCA, The Glad Café, Drygate, St Andrews in the Square, Saint Luke’s, The Admiral and The Hug and Pint will host this year’s shows with each venue known for its own special atmosphere. The opening night is a very special curtain raiser, The Late Great Townes Van Zandt Show, with the blessing of Townes’ son, John, features Rachel Sermanni, Jefferson Hamer, Roseanne Reid, Davie Scott from The Pearl Fishers, Jonas & Jane, plus one or two more. There are two evening gigs on October 6 and three shows in all on the Saturday, including a matinee, while the final day on October 8 offers two separate matinee performances and then the grand evening finale.

continues its two-day mission to support local talent, showcase breaking bands, and entertain with the very best in eclectic music, poetry and art. If you are in to BBC 6 Music, Jools Holland and the summer festival scene this is the place to soak up many quality acts. We are very excited that Glasgow’s Van T’s will be our raucous Saturday night headliners. Fronted by twin sisters delivering classy harmonies, the Van Ts will rock you with their blissed-out wall of sound underpinned by sunny surf guitar. The band’s star is in the ascendant as they have recently enjoyed supporting the legendary Jesus and Mary Chain, as well as releasing the single, ‘Fresh Meat’, earlier in the year. Over the summer The Van T’s will be playing festivals across the country before taking the headline honours at Stowed Out. The rest of the line up on Saturday will take you from The Boy with the Lion Head snapping at the heels of Radiohead and Fightened Rabbit to the sultry vocals of Emme Woods and catchy electronic indie from The Little Kicks. On top of this there is a taste of India from Dance Ihayami, the return of Borders’ favourites, the Dull Fudds, widescreen epic folk from Youth And The Young, and hard rock from Slim Mistress. Saturday’s Spoken Word stage has become the emotional centrepiece of Stowed Out and this year we are very excited to showcase the

brilliant Stephen Watt and Rachel McCrum. Although each have their own unique and individual talent, they share a dazzling use of imagery and metaphor as they explore themes of identity and compassion.
Sea Bass Kid, our Friday support act, will deliver high octane Ska to build the party atmosphere, but Friday starts in a mellower vein with maverick singer songwriter Jack Hinks and his unique fusion of rock, jazz, blues and prog.
Friday evening is shaping up to be equally glorious affair. You cannot fail to dance to Friday headliners Orkestra del Sol. Their brilliant sunsoaked bonkersness will lead you to a magic place of maximum fun. Delivering funked-up jazz tones to crazy klezmer style beats and uniquely blended global rhythms, the Orkestra del Sol will get even the most staid of audience members to on their feet and boogying. Like the Van T’s, the Orkestra are touring festivals this summer with a new album, Gross National Happiness, and we can’t wait for them to energise the Stowed Out crowd with their infections goodtime vibes. The
Last year’s Stowed Out has some very special moments, including an emotional homecoming for Scot Hutchison from Frightened Rabbit, and we are expecting this year’s festival will be equally entertaining and memorable! Some of Scotland’s most exciting young traditional musicians will take centre stage at this year’s Linlithgow Folk Festival in September and the organisers are claiming that the event will be the biggest and best yet. As well as the headline act Barluath – who are a diverse and innovative young Glasgow-based band – the five days of the Festival will also see appearances by emerging talent, such as BBC Young Traditional musician of the year, fiddler Charlie Stewart, the guitarist, Luc McNally, the award-winning singer, Iona Fyfe and Linlithgow’s very own Town Piper, Ross Miller, who has recently graduated with a first class honours degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Barlauth’s headline concert at the Academy Theatre on Saturday September 9th will be the high point of the five-day Folk Festival, which runs from the 6th to the 10th of September. First staged in 1999, the Festival is firmly established on the traditional music scene and all the mainstay events will take place again. These include the musical cruises on the canal, the family ceilidh at the Vennel, the Hub at the Masonic Hall, the Bluegrass Concert and Gospel Session, and the outdoor Nora Devine Stage at the Cross.
Ross Miller, and friends stage a fabulous concert at Linlithgow Rose Social Club. The Bluegrass Concert will move to larger premises at the Academy, with The Daddy Naggins making a welcome return to Linlithgow. A Youth Festival Showcase for budding young talent will take place in St Michael’s Kirk Hall. Already a magnet from visitors from far and wide, the Festival will have even more of an international feel this year, with the participation of musical groups from Linlithgow’s twin areas in France and Germany. Folk Festival chairman, Murdoch Kennedy, explained: “We are trying to keep things fresh, as well as continuing to raise the bar. This year, various new events will be taking place and new venues will be used for the first time. This is a very exciting development and we are delighted to welcome new partner organisations, such as the Linlithgow Town Centre BID, who are supporting the Youth Festival Showcase in the Kirk Hall. This initiative will give emerging talent the opportunity to perform in a relaxed and informal setting.
The organisers are not resting on their laurels, however, and there will be several innovations this year, bringing new venues into play. These will include:-

HebCelt Gig At International Celtic Music Festival In France Sells Out International music fans have snapped up all tickets for a concert showcasing Hebridean music and culture at Europe’s biggest Celtic festival in France this week. The islands’ language, culture and heritage will play a leading role when Scotland is celebrated at the annual Lorient Interceltic Festival being held from 4-13 August in Brittany. Scotland is this year’s Guest Country of Honour at the gathering, and a team from the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival is organising the opening concert on 5 August, which will kick start a number of events featuring Scottish artists throughout the ten days. The sell-out show at the 1,038-seat venue, comes just two weeks after the end of this year’s HebCelt, which was one of the most successful in the event’s 22-year history. Headlined by The Waterboys, Imelda May, Dougie MacLean and Lucy Spraggan, the festival featured more than 40 acts and over 70 hours of performances in the main arena, in Stornoway town centre and in sell-out community shows in Lewis and Harris, reaching nearly 16,000 attendances over its four-day run. HebCelt director Caroline Maclennan said: “We are thrilled the opening show at Lorient is a sell-out. It is such a wonderful opportunity to promote the music and culture of the festival and the islands to a huge international audience. “It is great news, coming on the back of such a successful HebCelt. It’s been a major challenge organising two events simultaneously, but it has also been very rewarding. And we could see the benefits of cultural tourism from this for years to come.”

The curtain-raising show will include an excerpt from the documentary ‘Hebrides - Islands on the Edge’, the music for which was composed by Capercaillie’s Donald Shaw. Some of the leading Hebridean artists in the modern era will come together for ‘Blasta’ (Gaelic for tasty or delicious), a show specially commissioned for this year’s Lorient festival and featuring Gaelic singers Anna Murray, Mischa Macpherson, Ceitlin Smith and Josie Duncan, from the isle of Lewis. Also performing during the opening show are the Mishca Macpherson Trio, Tide Lines and Elephant Sessions. In addition, HebCelt has its own pavilion at Lorient. With assistance from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Outer Hebrides Tourism and An Lanntair arts centre, the stand will be used to promote HebCelt and its host area as a cultural and tourism destination and will offer festival goers the opportunity to enter a competition to win travel and accommodation to the Outer Hebrides. Lisardo Lombardo, the Lorient festival’s artistic director, said: “Lorient will become in 2017 a window for the discovery of Scotland today, more involved and modern than ever. The whole city will be put in Scottish colours and all our capacity of media resonance will be made available to show that this great European nation will always have a place of honour at the Interceltic Festival of Lorient. “We are sure that the opening show will be a great event, very well organised, with artists representative of a living tradition and a new talented generation that will become a reference in Scotland and all over the world.” HebCelt has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international showpiece for roots, Celtic and traditional music. On paper they said it wouldn’t work, a festival in late September in a remote village on the West Coast of Scotland 60 miles from the nearest town, but that was ten years ago. 2017 sees a few changes for our friendly, small (but we thank perfectly formed) festival enter its enters its thirteenth year. Moving to the Pier in the centre of the village, still expect another year of fun regardless of what the weather has to say about it. Another year making new friends, and catching up with old ones. The bill has been announced for Paisley’s Spree festival – featuring a one-off collaboration between Scottish indie act Frightened Rabbit and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Paisley Abbey. The festival of music, comedy, theatre and more – which will take over the town centre between 13 and 22 October – is now in its sixth year and is part of Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021. www.thespree.co.uk
