Orkney Folk Festival Reveals First Four Acts Orkney :: 24-27 May :: www.orkneyfolkfestival.com TICKETS from April @ www.orkneyfolkfestival.com/tickets/ The first four artists to appear at the 2018 Orkney Folk Festival have been announced this week. Scottish singersongwriter, Dougie MacLean; exquisite Highland fiddler, Duncan Chisholm, with his extended band line-up; String Sisters - a ten piece collaboration featuring world-renowned fiddle players and accompanists from the USA, Norway, Sweden, Ireland and Shetland; and Newfoundland’s globe-trotting trio, The Once, are all heading to the 36th annual festival in May.

These first few names have been released ahead of the New Year, with a further line-up announcement due in January.

Dougie Maclean: “Scotland's pre-eminent singersongwriter and a national musical treasure” (SingOut USA), Dougie MacLean - originally famed for writing the much-loved anthem, Caledonia - has, over his 40year career, developed a unique blend of lyrical, roots based songwriting and instrumental composition. He has built an international reputation as songwriter, composer and extraordinary performer which has led to concerts and festivals all over the world, including New York's Carnegie Hall, Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and London’s Festival Theatre, whilst his performance during the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (alongside Kylie Minogue and Lulu) was viewed by a television audience of over a billion people worldwide.

Throughout their extensive travels, however, the trio’s Newfoundland origins have remained at their very core. Not only does their moniker instigate conversations of home at every gig - "the once" is a common phrase within the Newfoundland vernacular, meaning imminently whilst undefined and somewhat fluid - but whilst their sound has bloomed into one that truly represents their evolving inner artistry, so too has it dug its roots ever deeper into their idolised home island. Orkney Folk Festival director, Bob Gibbon said: “We’re excited to have released the first few names for next year’s festival - somehow already just five months away - and delighted to be welcoming all four to the festival and Orkney in May. “We’re very pleased to be welcoming back both Dougie MacLean and Duncan Chisholm. Dougie was last at the festival back in 2007, when he played just one concert at the old Kirkwall Arts Theatre, so we’re really pleased to have got him coming up for three days this time round, to get the full festival experience. And whilst Duncan has been many times, most recently just two years ago alongside Julie Fowlis, this will actually be the first time where he’s with us with his own band, presenting his stunning solo body of music. His band are absolutely first rate, and we’ve some very exciting plans for them which are still being worked on… watch this space. “It is also a major coup to have secured String Sisters, and persuaded them to come to the festival. Given how rarely they tour - owing to the logistics of them all coming together from four countries and across continents - it really is testament to the festival’s standing within the wider industry that they have chosen Orkney as one of their few dates in 2018. “So too are we hugely looking forward to welcoming The Once - one of eastern Canada’s most successful groups in recent years - with their unique signature of their Newfoundland routes, delivered with a modern sensibility and indie-folk feel. “These names are just the first handful to whet the appetite though - we’ll have many more brilliant artists, representing yet more diverse traditions and cultures, to shout about in the New Year.” The 36th Orkney Folk Festival will take place between May 24 and 27, 2018. For further information on the festival, its format and the artists appearing, visit the website or connect with the festival team on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
