MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS

Scotland's first festival of 2014 is nearly upon us Celtic Connections 2014 will truly come of age this January with an 18 day programme filled to the brim with incomparable entertainment that represents genres and styles from across the musical spectrum. The festival will take place in 17 venues right across the city, including the brand new SSE Hydro. Tickets are selling fast across all of the venues with people getting in there quickly before the Christmas rush. MNS recommended Highlight: One of the bestloved figures on Glasgow's music scene since the 1990s, guitarist (and now singer) RM Hubbert was seen by some as a surprise winner of 2013's Scottish Album of the Year Award, for the quietly stunning, magically diverse Thirteen Lost & Found but true cognoscenti considered it no more than just reward - an opinion powerfully affirmed by recent follow-up Breaks & Bone. On 21 January he appears with the Cairn String Quartet. Supporting RM Hubbert on this bill is Arab Strap moiety Aidan Moffat will open the show with a spoken-word set of his poetry and short prose, interwoven with deviously meandering background anecdotes. Also added to the Celtic Connections programme is collaborative show Shinty’s Heroes which was first performed at the 2013 Blas festival, on the eve of last September's Camanachd Cup final and as a prelude to 2014's Great War. This show celebrates many leading shinty players' authentically heroic role in the 1914-18 conflict,

stories often largely unknown outwith their Highland home areas. Combining music with narration and archive photographs, the show also incorporates a whistlestop tour through shinty history. Gary Innes leads an 11-strong cast of musicians with strong connections to the game, including Duncan Chisholm, Kathleen MacInnes, Allan Henderson, Iain MacFarlane, Norrie MacIver and of course Fergie MacDonald, author of recent chart-topping hit ‘The Shinty Referee’. Other firsts include the masterclass The Language of International Music which will be hosted by Sidiki Diabate and Walter Strauss and a whole weekend devoted to learning the ukulele. The Celtic Connections Song School will return to the stunning surroundings of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in 2014 and will feature singers from various different styles of singing. People are invited to come for the whole weekend and attend 4 workshops or they can drop in to individual workshops. Celtic Connections 2014 runs from Thursday 16th January – Sunday 2nd February and comprises a wealth of concerts, ceilidhs, talks, workshops, free events and late night sessions taking place over 18 days. Various venues across Glasgow are utilised for Celtic Connections 2014 such as the Main Auditorium in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, O2 ABC, The Tron, Òran Mór, The Mitchell Theatre, City Halls, Kelvingrove, St Andrews in the Square and the Old Fruitmarket will all play host to Celtic Connections events. Celtic Connections 2014 will also use the brand new SSE Hydro, Scotland’s biggest ever music venue.

Celtic Connections 2014 tickets are available @ www.celticconnections.com or by phone 0141 353 8000

Celtic Connections Festival Club Moves The Celtic Connections 2014 Festival Club has been relocated to Walkabout on Renfield Street. It was originally billed to be held in the The Vic within the Glasgow School of Art but the refurbishment of this venue is now not going to be completed in time. A spokesperson for the Glasgow School of Art, said: “The refurbishment of The Vic is part of the GSA’s new Reid Building, which is currently nearing completion. The whole development has one completion date, but the GSA had hoped it might be possible to get sign off for The Vic ahead of schedule. Every effort has been made, but in the end it has not been possible to do this. Consequently, the December 2013 and January 2014 original programme of events will not now be taking place as initially planned. This includes the Celtic Connections Festival Club events scheduled for mid to late January 2014.” Donald Shaw, Artistic Director for Celtic Connections, said: “It is unfortunate that The Vic will not be ready in time for next year’s festival but it is fantastic that we have been able to secure Walkabout as a replacement venue. In 2014 we also have the return of the ever-popular Late Night Sessions which will take place in the National Piping Centre and will offer a slightly more relaxed alternative to the Festival Club. All tickets already purchased for the festival club will still be valid for the new venue, however if patrons have any questions about their booking the festival encourage them to contact the box office on 0141 353 8000.

goNORTH 2014 will be in Inverness from 4-5 June Music Submissions open on Friday 24 January - keep up to date with news @

http://gonorthfestival.co.uk/music-submissions

goNORTH Festival director, Amanda Millen has announced that next year’s goNORTH Festival will take place on 4-5 June 2014, with music submission entries opening on 24 January. The 2014 edition of goNORTH, which remains a free two-day festival, promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a new strand reflecting the increasing importance of the gaming industry to the economy of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The lineup for goNORTH 2014 will also be announced in January. Former BBC drama producer, Millen, 42, has curated the annual Inverness-based creative industries festival since 2007. Last year, the festival, funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), broke its own box office record by doubling in size in just two years. During her time at the helm, Lochaber-born Millen has developed goNORTH into a creative extravaganza, featuring performances by upand-coming bands, on-the-job radio and television training, film premieres and screenings, as well as masterclasses from both national and internationally known names in the creative industries. Top creative industry names, such as Madonna’s former record label manager, Danny Savage, and Mamie Coleman, vice president of Music

and Production with the FOX network (voted one of the 30 most powerful women in the music industry by Billboard Magazine) are regular attenders of goNORTH. goNORTH festival began 13 years ago as a showcase for musicians and bands in the north of Scotland and has developed a unique niche within Scotland’s creative industries. Its work doesn’t end when the festival is over. Throughout the year, Amanda and her team take the time to nurture creative talent from within the Highlands & Islands at events and workshops all over Scotland. Many creative careers have been established in music, film, television, fashion, publishing and gaming, thanks to goNORTH. Last year, over two days, it held 35 sessions and events featuring top industry names in music, film, broadcasting, publishing and fashion. It also welcomed over 75 unsigned bands and screened 50 films. Veteran music producer, Mick Glossop, who has worked with artists like Frank Zappa and Van Morrison said: “It’s the only event in Scotland that is doing this. It’s like a slightly smaller version of South by South West in Austin Texas. It has the same vibe exactly.” According to Scots singer songwriter Rab Noakes, who has worked extensively with Amanda in his role as a director of independent production company, Neon, her can-do approach is a breath of fresh air within the creative industries in Scotland. He said: “Amanda Millen is a great asset to goNORTH and indeed to the wider arts-scene in Scotland, and beyond. She is bright, energetic, opinionated, bold, efficient and effective. She is not shy in suggesting possibilities to artists such as creative collaborations. Having made the suggestions she is capable of identifying, and acting on, what it takes to get things done.”

Tiree Music Festival wins more awards! The tiny island of Tiree is celebrating as the Tiree Music Festival (TMF) has picked up its third award of the year at the prestigious Thistle Awards held in Stirling Castle. The small Hebridean festival collected the award for ‘Best Cultural Event’, beating off stiff competition from major events such as the Glasgow Film Festival. This award follows on from the regional award at the Highlands & Islands Tourism Awards in October while TMF also retained the award of ‘Best Small Festival’ in Scotland at the Scottish Event Awards in September. Formed in 2010, TMF has rapidly grown in the space of a few years to become Scotland’s best kept secret on the summer festival scene, however that secret could now be out due to the trio of awards collected in 2013. “We are just stunned to collect this award”, said TMF Director Daniel Gillespie. “Winning the regional award was a big enough shock to us, so to win the National award is just something we would have never dreamed of when starting the festival in 2010. We have a very special team that commit so much of their time and energy to the festival - this award is testament to all their hard work over the past 4 years.” With a population of approximately 500-600 people, TMF has created a huge economic boost to the island of Tiree. An independent report by MKA Economics estimated that the festival had generated £493’197 for the local region with 76% of the 1500 attendees travelling from out with the region to enjoy the festival held on the island dubbed the ‘Hawaii of the North’. It is this stunning location and island atmosphere that fellow TMF Director Stewart MacLennan feels makes the event so special. “TMF isn’t just a festival, it is an island adventure. So many people feed back to us that they have never seen such stunning beaches or landscape. This combined with the friendly island atmosphere and great music are the key reasons people tell us they want to return Tiree and TMF.” Planning is already under way for TMF2014 - the first three day event in the festival’s history and will be held from the 18–20 July.

Arctic Monkeys announced as T in the Park 2014 headliners Festival organisers DF Concerts and founding partner Tennent’s Lager have confirmed that Arctic Monkeys will headline T in the Park 2014. The band said: “We are delighted to be playing T in the Park and look forward to a great night with our Scottish fans.” This year’s 20th year celebrations were widely hailed as the best T in the Park ever, and Arctic Monkeys are the first headliners – and the first act – to be announced for next year’s festival which will take place over 11–13 July. Geoff Ellis, Festival Director, said: “We’re thrilled to announce Arctic Monkeys as our first headliners for T in the Park 2014. After this year’s fantastic 20th year celebrations, we asked our audience who they’d like to see at next year’s festival and Arctic Monkeys came top of the poll, so we’re really pleased to be able to confirm them for T in the Park. When they take to the stage in Glasgow this week they’ll prove exactly why they’re one of the greatest live acts around, and I’m sure we can look

forward to another phenomenal set at T in the Park. We have many more fantastic acts in store which we’ll announce next year, and can’t wait to see you all again in July.” George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship, Tennent’s Lager, said: “This year’s T in the Park was one of the best ever, and I’m sure we have another wonderful weekend in store next July – Arctic Monkeys will put on a phenomenal show. As founding partner, Tennent’s have been the T in T in the Park since the very beginning and we’re exceptionally proud to still be a part of this incredible festival as it enters into its third decade.”
