Legends Mix With Homegrown Talent at Edinburgh's Wee Dub Festival 2019 Edinburgh :: 1-3 March :: www.weedubfestival.co.uk

the mns collection ….

BUY YOUR TICKETS @ www.weedubfestival.co.uk/tickets/

Edinburgh-based promoters of worldclass dub and reggae music are gearing up for their 9th edition at the start of March. Over the past few years, the Wee Dub Festival has become established as one of the finest and most-loved events of its kind in the UK and beyond, attracting the very best established and up-andcoming artists to the Capital each year for a unique celebration of reggae and soundsystem culture. Wee Dub Festival attracts ticket-buyer from across the UK and from many European countries. To entertain visitors this year Wee Dub has unveiled a line-up in keeping with previous years, where established legends meet a host of home-grown and rising talent meet across 4 soundsystem sessions in venues throughout Edinburgh’s historic Old Town: La Belle Angele, The Bongo Club, The Mash House, Liquid Room and Skylight, as well as two Fringe sessions: a film screening and a family social event.

While Wee Dub is about serious bass-weight mediation and proper dub music, but it is also about the party. And few DJ duos do that better than festival-faves The Nextmen, who appear on the Saturday night with one of the most promising new reggae voices in the UK, Kiko Bun, signed to Island Records and destined for cross-over success. Other vocalists who appear at the festival include the legendary jungle-don Dynamite MC, and first ladies of reggae Marina P from France and Madrid’s Ponchita Peligros take the mic with Mungo’s Hi-Hi and Stalawa Sound respectively. But the festival would be nothing with the foundation of the music: the soundsystem. And Wee Dub will be amplified by the best systems in the country: Mungo’s Hi-Fi, Electrikal, Messenger and Mighty Oak. Each has a different style and a different vibe, and across the 4 sessions ticket-buyer will experience the full range of the music and culture over the weekend. The festival is also proud to continue their partnership with Edinburgh College, where music business and production students are offered the chance to volunteer at the festival and gain some insight into one of the best-regarded music festivals in the city.

www.weedubfestival.co.uk www.twitter.com/WeeDubFestival

The 2019 edition is headlined by two bona-fide www.facebook.com/weedubfestival godfathers of the UK scene: Jah Shaka and Adrian Sherwood. Shaka is regarded as the leading light in traditional soundsystem style dub music, whose dedication to the original roots style and spiritual marathon sets has gained him an almost mythic status globally – there is no more influential artist that Jah Shaka and his first appearance at Wee Dub is hotly anticipated. Sherwood can be regarded as a vanguard of the secondary wave of UK producers, whose influential On-U Sound label helped take dub into the wider counter-culture movement and nascent dance scene of the early 1980s, leading to collaborations with acts like Depeche Mode and Primal Scream. Beyond these two headline-grabbing appearances, the 2019 line-up sees a whole host of sets from the current crop of talent pushing soundsystem culture forward in the current era. Kahn & Neek, in particular, have gained a huge following for their uncompromising modern clash of dub and grime, while fellow Bristolians Gardna & Kreed are following the same path in establishing themselves nationally as a force of the new generation.

Stonehaven Folk Festival have their 'World’s Largest Ceilidh Band' in 2018 declared a Guinness World Record Stonehaven :: 12-15 July 2019 :: www.stonehavenfolkfestival.co.uk BUY YOUR TICKETS (from March) @ www.stonehavenfolkfestival.co.uk/tickets/

It's official! The World’s Largest Ceilidh Band, organised by 'Stonehaven Folk' last year is a Guinness World Record Holder. It took months of planning to meet the stringent requirements for last year’s attempt to set a new record for the world’s largest ceilidh band. Forms had to be filled and strict evidence protocols followed. Stewards, counters, dancers, video photographers and even Aberdeenshire’s Lord Provost were needed to ensure the event met the challenge. Nerves were taut as the July attempt date approached. Guinness World Records require a minimum of 250 participants for any mass participation record to be set. Liz Johnstone was so determined to recruit, that no musician was safe ..... “I would accost people anywhere,” she said. “I was standing in a queue in Glasgow and spotted a woman carrying a violin case, so I asked her if she could play. It turned out she was a member of the National Fiddle Orchestra.” Meanwhile Scottish Culture and Tradition tutor Sandy Tweddle, who was musical director on the day, was teaching all his pupils the tunes for the ceilidh dance sets. Musicians came from all over Scotland, mostly from Aberdeen City and Shire but also England and even the USA and Germany.

The delighted Stonehaven Folk Festival organisers celebrate hearing they have set a new world record. L-R: Sandy Tweddle, Kenn Clark, Martin Kasprowicz, Liz Johnstone and Meg Findlay

So it is with absolute triumph that the committee of Stonehaven Folk Festival now declare themselves ‘officially amazing’ - and they have the certificate to prove it.

The record-setting event took place on 6 July 2018, in the assembly hall of Mackie Academy, Stonehaven, with Aberdeenshire Lord Provost Bill Howatson adjudicating. Music played included The Muckin’ o’ Geordie’s Byre, the Atholl Highlanders and Harvest Home and the dancers were provided by SC&T - they danced Strip the Willow, the Canadian Barn Dance and the Gay Gordons. Instruments played included: Accordion, Jubilation at a faultless performance by the 288-strong band was followed Banjo, Bodhran, Cello, Clarsach, Fiddle, Flute, Free Reed Instruments, Guitar, Keyboard, Mandolin Family, Mouthie, Viola and Whistle! by frustration over the following months: new records are not declared without stringent vetting of the evidence provided. www.stonehavenfolkfestival.co.uk Meg Findlay said: “You can imagine how I felt when they came back to www.twitter.com/stonehavenfest us in December asking for a list of names and instruments of all the www.facebook.com/Stonehaven-Folk-Festival-241183992686719 participants.” There was the usual last minute panic ..... T-shirts had been ordered both to identify the musicians and, cunningly, had music printed on the back to help the rows of players. But they did not arrive until literally minutes before the non-stop procession of tin whistles, guitars, bodhrans, banjos and fiddles appeared at the Mackie Academy school hall!
