The Mike & Ruthy Band European Debut at Celtic Connections 2016 When Mike Merenda and Ruthy Ungar fronted The Mammals, they appeared before huge festival crowds all over America and further afield, crowned folk royalty with their memorable politically charged, old-timeinfused raw and raucous music. Ten years on, they re-emerged to regain their position at the forefront of 21st century roots music with a new band and an album that for many, raised the bar in 2015. When The Mike + Ruthy Band’s “Bright As You Can” got its Stateside release, it made an instantaneous impact that sent reverberations across the country. As a result, they ended the year featuring in many “Best of 2015” lists. Now, the UK is about to find out what all the fuss is about when the band flies in for a headline show at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket on the opening weekend of the city’s Celtic Connections festival.

hard to this music, I've listened to it almost every day, all year long, and it's never gotten stale or predictable." Just as that assessment appeared, another glowing tribute followed from Folk Alley, widely recognised as North America’s most important portal for the genre, when they announced that “Bright As You Can” was one of their Top Ten Albums of The Year. Meanwhile, music writers in the UK were beginning to sense that this was a band that had produced something exceptional and again, they showered them with praise, R2 magazine stating: "They make glorious big-time music". Mike Merenda says they were wise to take time off from touring to gather their thoughts and make plans for the next journey after the demise of The Mammals, with whom they recorded four albums.

The couple say they have had Celtic Connections on their “must-do” list since they started out. “Everybody says the same thing – it’s the best festival of its kind on the planet. It was such a gift to get an invitation to come over for a show – especially on the opening weekend,” he added. We know that by the time we reach the end of 2016, we will be looking back on this as one of the outstanding highlights.” Joining them for the Old Fruitmarket show will be three others who fall into the “master musician” category - Karrnnell Sawitsky, Daniel Koulack and Trent Freeman. Sawitsky & Koulack’s Fiddle and Banjo album won them a lot or new fans when it was issued in 2015. Songlines magazine said the album was “exquisitely subtle,” and added – “you will be dazzled."

He said: “The past twelve months have been a total blast. We played some of the best shows of www.mikeandruthy.com our 15-plus year career and now we are starting www.facebook.com/mikeandruthy work on the next album.” https://twitter.com/mikeandruthy

The core five-piece is being augmented by a brass section to replicate the album’s feel, and showcase a ‘live’ performance that has had the critics drooling. The band play The Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow on 17 January and tickets are available online at: www.celticconnections. com of via the box office on 0141 353 8000 The band is riding on a high, following a continuous run of sold-out US shows. At the end of 2015, Kim Ruehl, editor of America’s hugelyinfluential No Depression magazine singled out their album as her recorded highlight of the year. She told readers: “The disc feels like home, like a bunch of players who know each other so well, they don't even have to think about it. Themes of family and reckoning prevail, woven through music that is as celebratory as it is contemplative. “Because I have a two-year-old who dances

Addictive TV - Orchestra of Samples Celtic Connections : Saturday 23 January, 7:30pm : Drygate Brewery, Glasgow

The joint alias of pioneering electronic artists and audio/ video remixers Graham Daniels and Mark Vidler, Addictive TV have won huge international acclaim for their Orchestra of Samples project, created by filming over 200 musicians around the globe, and editing their sessions together into a ‘digital supergroup’, a stunning fusion of image and music.

Orchestra of Samples is about music without borders, and in early 2014 the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival commissioned Addictive TV to record Northumbrian and Scottish musicians for a performance of the project at their September 'border crossing' themed festival, tying in with the vote on Scottish independence. And in July Addictive TV headed to BerwickUpon-Tweed... Addictive TV filmed with such renowned musicians as Matt Seattle, a Border Piper from Hawick, who's an expert on Border and Northumbrian pipes and fiddle music. Matt's published several books on the subject and records / performs with his Matt Seattle Band. Another hugely well known figure in the folk scene Addictive TV recorded was Alistair Anderson, the internationally recognised master of the English Concertina but who also plays the Northumbrian Pipes. He's

Filming Shona Mooney in Berwick-upon-Tweed

released a number of albums, both collaborative and with The Alistair Anderson Band and in 1989 he cofounded Folkworks - a programme helping young people discover traditional music, that's now run by the Sage Gateshead. And in 2001, with the Music Department of Newcastle University, he launched England’s first ever degree course in folk and traditional music. One of the first to take that course and now a lecturer herself at Newcastle is fantastic Scottish violinist Shona Mooney, who Addictive TV recorded playing her actual grandfather's fiddle! She plays with the group The Shee and, in 2006, won the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year. Addictive TV also recorded 3 recent graduates from Newcastle, now one of the World's leading centres for the study of traditional music and still the only place in England offering a Folk & Traditional Music BA Honours degree. First was percussionist Callum Younger, from the band Metro Champion, who plays the bodhran as his main instrument, the others being both tambour and tablas! Next was singer Amy Leach from Edinburgh, who specialises in songs from Scotland and the North East of England. Then Scottish fiddle player Rachel Cross, who plays with the amazing Bridie Jackson and the Arbour, the band Clash magazine described as “a midnight dark yet airily bright breath of fresh folkish air”! And lastly, playing harmonica, was Berwick local guitar hero Brian Martin, owner of the The Music Gallery shop and Kazmiranda Café where regular live music nights are held.

Matt Seattle at the Berwick filming session

GRAHAM DANIELS: I haven't played in Glasgow for quite some time, so it's fantastic to be bringing our new Orchestra of Samples show to Scotland, as we filmed so many Scottish musicians for the project when we had an artist's residency in Berwick-Upon-Tweed! MARK VIDLER: My wife is Scottish, so I'm allowed to say "Tis gonnae be pure dead brilliant tae be back in Glescae 'n' have a few pints o'heavy"!

Shetland Folk Festival announces eclectic line-up for 36th festival Shetland : 28 April - 1 May : www.shetlandfolkfestival.com TICKETS [from March] @ www.shetlandfolkfestival.com/tickets An eclectic line-up for the 36th Shetland Folk Festival has been announced by its volunteer committee with fifteen acts having been so far confirmed for this year’s four-day feast of superb music, sessions and sleepless nights! An exciting variety of bands from USA, Canada, Russia and Belgium will be featured alongside an array of fantastic UK and local talent. The furthest travelled act is HuunHuur-Tu, from the Tuvan region of Russia on the Mongolian border. They are a fascinating and mysterious band playing their native music on native instruments, and performing their famous throat singing which forms a deep and resonant backdrop.

‘soon by making waves around the world’. Sheesham & Lotus & ‘Son hail from Ontario in Canada and bring with them a repertoire of exciting ragtime and blues songs from years past. Their riotous performance is as much a treat for the eyes as the ears, as they bring out a selection of traditional and home-made instruments during their show. Also from Canada are De Temps Antan, a trio that can be described as something of a ‘super-group’ of Quebecois folk music. The individual members are virtuosic performers, and the band is sure to bring the absolute best of FrenchCanadian traditional folk music to new generations. From San Francisco comes Laura Cortese and The Dance Cards. Their lively performances exhibit the depth and soul of American roots music, backed by grooves that alternatively inspire Cajun twostepping and rock ‘n’ roll swagger. Seeing this quartet on stage, you get a sense that they might snap some fiddle strings or punch a hole in the bass drum. Also from the USA are The Railsplitters who are based in the Colorado Rockies. They pride themselves on giving bluegrass their own spin, while calling on genre influences from country twang, 50s doo-wop, modern pop and rock ‘n’ roll. Their powerful vocals, great harmonies and breath-taking instrumentals are sure to take the Shetland audience by storm.

This year’s festival sees five varied and brilliant acts from across the pond. Taking a short break from their busy touring schedule in North America just so they can appear at the Shetland Folk Festival, are award-winning Canadian trio The East Pointers from Prince Edward Island. Their contemporary twist on traditional Celtic tunes and ability to get hands clapping, feet stomping and bodies bouncing has led them Representing Europe this year are to be described as a band who will Wör from the Flanders region of
