Perthshire Amber returned in November refreshed and revitalised Perthshire :: 1-3 November 2019 :: www.perthshireamber.com TICKETS @ www.perthshireamber.com/index.php/tickets2 - from 4pm on 14 May
Perthshire Amber returned to Dunkeld last November after taking a year off. This much-loved music festival returned refreshed and revitalised in 2018 with packed performances delivering one of the busiest weekends of the year for local businesses, giving an additional boost to the area's economy. Perthshire Amber, organised by folk musician Dougie MacLean and his wife Jenny, had built up an international following in previous years, with thousands of fans travelling to Perthshire from around the world for up to 10 days of music. Its very popular return this year featured a more streamlined diary with performances condensed into three days, but this still attracted festival-goers from 25 countries worldwide! The festival included acoustic music sessions in Dunkeld’s four historic pubs, open mic performances and early evening 'Cabaret Amber' concerts with some great young bands. Highlights included a fiddle concert in the atmospheric Murthly Castle Chapel performed by Dougie MacLean and Tim Edey; Dougie’s solo performance at Perth Concert Hall on Saturday 3 November and then a sold-out concert to close the festival on the Sunday evening.

Planning for the 2019 festival which runs from 1-3 November is now well underway, with many exciting performances in store. Amber Central, based in The Royal Hotel, Dunkeld, will be the 2019 festival hub again. As usual the festival's ethos will focus on being vibrant and welcoming with music at its core - all set in beautiful autumnal Perthshire. There will be music from castle to concert hall plus Cabaret Amber, Amber Open Mic and lots of acoustic sessions. Tickets for 2019 will be on sale from 4pm on 14 May on the link above or on 01350 724261 - you can also email: admin@butterstone.com with any questions.

Tiree Music Festival showcased a special night on Friday 18 January at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket to kick off a year of celebrations to mark its 10th edition. Surprising fans throughout the night with a host of festival favourites from over the years, the sold-out Celtic Connections show TIREE: A Toast to 10 years of Tiree Music Festival finished in style with a spectacular countdown to TMF10’s line-up being announced and tickets going on sale at midnight. The full concert was also live-streamed via the festival’s Facebook page to an international online audience of 13,000 and a reach of nearly 30,000 (and counting!) Artists confirmed for TMF 10, taking place on the island of TIree between Friday 12 – Sunday 14 July, include TMF stalwarts Skerryvore, who have performed at every festival since it began. Other acts include Tide Lines, Sandi Thom, Jill Jackson, Mànran, Niteworks, Trail West, Gunna Sound, Face the West, Funbox and Heron Valley. A unique collaboration will also take place at the festival. Entitled Waiting on a Sunny Day: TMF’s Tribute to ‘The Boss’– this will be a collective performance from some of artists on the Scottish folk scene who have been inspired by the one and only Bruce Springsteen. The title is also a nod to the slightly less than favourable weather the festival has had over the past few years, with TMF using the hashtag #waitingonasunnyday over the past couple of years.

incredible night and the perfect way to start our TMF10 year of celebrations! I’d like to say such a huge thank you to all of the festival’s friends – artists and audiences – for coming along and making it such an unforgettable night! It was brilliant to be able to stream the whole thing live too for any of our loyal TMF fans who couldn’t make it on the night, “It’s an amazing feeling to be looking forward to celebrating our 10th Tiree Music Festival and we promise everyone who is heading for Tiree this July that this festival will be our best yet.”
The inaugural Tiree Music Festival took place in Daniel Gillespie, Skerryvore founding July 2010 and was attended by a capacity crowd member and Artistic Director for Tiree of 600. The annual event has since flourished Music Festival, said: “Our special ‘TIREE: A with an increased 2000-strong capacity – an Toast to 10 Years of Tiree Music Festival’ was an attendance that is 3 times the population of the island. The festival offers a diverse programme with a mixture of genres including folk, pop and indie. Artists across the years have included The Fratellis, Dougie MacLean, Sharon Shannon, The Levellers, Capercaillie, Sandi Thom and Eddi Reader. Since it’s humble beginnings, TMF has prided itself on being a family friendly festival with a creative programme for young people and their families, including workshops, sport, music and culture. The Island of Tiree is often dubbed “The Hawaii of the North” and with picture-perfect white sands and world-famous surf, a trip to Tiree Music Festival is a real Island adventure. Tiree has been described as one of the most stunning festival locations in the world and so it is little wonder each year visitors from around the world flock to this tiny island for three days of outstanding music, culture and friendship. Tiree Music Festival’s travel partners are Calmac and Loganair who are putting on additional services over the weekend of the event to support the festival.

Shetland Folk Festival launches 39th line-up Shetland :: 2-5 May :: www.shetlandfolkfestival.com TICKETS @ www.shetlandfolkfestival.com/tickets
Shetland Folk Festival fans can now start getting into a listening frenzy and counting down the days till 2 May and the 39th Festival as organisers launch this year’s visiting artists line-up. The 39th Festival will feature visiting musicians from over ten countries and spanning various genres. As in previous years there will be a combination of new and upcoming acts as well as some familiar favourites and legendary guests from previous years. Locals will be delighted to see the return of outrageously talented multi- instrumentalists, JP Cormier (CB, Canada) and Tim Edey (UK). Both have been recipients of great acclaim and countless awards in their careers, whether performing in other guises or solo. Cormier has legendary status in the isles and beyond through his three previous Shetland visits while Edey is also a firm Shetland favourite and picked up various Radio 2 Folk Awards since last playing here. Last year they released their first album together ‘Once’ (each track recorded in one take) and it has proved too much to resist for festival organisers not to have them back together after their storming guitar collaborations last time they were here in 2012. Both will also perform solo sets during the weekend too.

heart-rending songs and melodies.
It wouldn’t be the Shetland Folk Festival without a strong Transatlantic influence and North American acts are well represented in 2019 with Montreal’s Kaia Kater making her first trip here after stealing hearts at last year’s Cambridge Folk Festival and Celtic Connections. Her oldtime banjo-picking skills, jazz-fuelled voice and deft song craft have landed her in the spotlight in North America and the UK with some people regarding her as a suitable heir to legendary Rhiannon Giddens. Another Canadian act, Juno award winning duo, Pharis and Jason Romero are also bound to have audiences moved with beautiful harmonies and old-time tunes. Alongside the visiting artists, over a hundred local musicians and dozens of local acts will also perform over the festival weekend. The final programme (including local acts) will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Festival Head of Programming, Mhari McLeman is confident this line-up will satisfy Shetland audience: “Every year, we try and bring an eclectic and diverse range of styles and musicians up here and we hope festival goers like what they hear. While we pride ourselves on breaking brand new bands to Shetland audiences, it’s also lovely to see returning faces and we also can’t wait to show off our local talent alongside these celebrated international acts.” With the festival soon coming into its 5th decade and as popular as ever, the committee are confident of keeping up a quality lineup in future years despite continuing cuts in public funding and the uncertainty that Brexit is bringing to all festivals across the UK. McLeman adds: “Like many other organisations who are working with international artists, we will need to keep an eye on the current political situation and what implications will be for movement of musicians and the strength of the pound - all of this has a bearing on what we can bring to Shetland. However, we are grateful to all our volunteers, sponsors and committee members who continue to work together to make the event what it is.” The festival runs from 2-5 May and early festival membership goes on sale on 1 February for that month only. Early members will be able to buy tickets from Monday 18 March, while everyone else must wait until general ticket release and memberships going back on sale the 1 April.
