As part of BBC Sounds Independent Venue Week 2020, the Girls’ Rock School songwriting circle present FemmeFest: a full day of female identifying musicians playing original music, in Edinburgh's Leith Depot. Members of the circle - as featured on the recent BBC Scotland documentary ‘Hidden Lives: Riot Grrl Rock’ ( video clip @ www.bbc.co. uk/programmes/p07tlvy7 ) - will be showcasing original material covering a range of genres, showing off the talent and scope of the feminist music scene in Edinburgh. The Girls’ rock school song circle branched off from Girl’s Rock School Edinburgh, a not for profit organisation encouraging all women to make music. Cash Back in Fife – new festival celebrates the legacy of Johnny Cash – his music, influence and his family connections to Fife Aberdour :: 6-8 March :: www.deanowens.com/cash-back-in-fife BUY YOUR TICKETS @ www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4468092

Cash Back in Fife is a new festival to celebrate Johnny Cash's enormous legacy of music, inspiration and his family connection to the area. Music legend Johnny Cash was immensely proud of his family's Fife roots. The US singersongwriter behind such hits as I Walk the Line was a regular visitor to Falkland, following a chance discovery that his family name was indelibly linked to the rural community and the neighbouring settlement of Strathmiglo - Cash played a special televised concert at Falkland Palace in 1981. Spread over Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6-8 March, the line-up is an exciting mix of established musicians and quality up and coming ones (most with a strong Fife connection) – Rab Noakes, Dean Owens, England’s Hannah Rose Platt, Martha Healy, David Latto and The Marriage, featuring Big Country/Skids frontman Stuart Adamson’s daughter Kirsten Adamson; plus celebrated author Ian Rankin, talking about one of his favourite records by Fife musician Jackie Leven. What they all have in common is a love for Cash’s music and acknowledge his influence on their careers, particularly as singer songwriters. This is NOT a tribute festival. Artists will mostly be performing their own material, but with some classic Cash tunes mixed in.

Europe’s largest winter music festival, Celtic Connections, is now well underway and enters the final week rounding of a total of 18 days of music on stages across Glasgow that have lit up the city. Around 2,000 musicians are taking part in 300 events in Glasgow showcasing an outstanding array of traditional folk, celtic, roots, Americana, jazz, soul and world music. Year on year, Celtic Connections welcomes an array of international artists for the January festival, whilst also celebrating homegrown, up-and-coming talent. This year, artists land in Glasgow from all over the world, including Canada, Senegal, Burma, Finland, India, Cameroon, Lebanon, USA, France, Spain, Guinea, Australia, Portugal and Mali. Closer to home, 70 school pupils from the Western Isles beat the odds of Storm Brendan, to travel to Glasgow a day earlier than planned to help launch the festival ahead of their ownshow, Dìleab: Air a’ Chuan. The show at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall saw youngsters from the Sgoil Lionacleit Pipe Band, the Sir E Scott Choir from Harris, Castlebay Community School in Barra and The Nicolson Institute in Lewis took to the festival stage. This year’s much-loved Opening Concert presented the world premiere of a new orchestral symphony inspired by the Declaration of Arbroath. Composed of six brand new pieces by leading Scottish composers, it was commissioned for Celtic Connections 2020 with backing from the Scottish Government’s Festival Expo Fund to mark the 700th anniversary of the 1320 declaration of Scottish independence and will be performed by the legendary Grit Orchestra, led by conductor/arranger Greg Lawson. Other world-leading performances included Nitin Sawhney, Tessa Lark, Phamie Gow & the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of The Year 20th Celebration, Anais Mitchell, Michael McGoldrick and anniversary celebration concerts from some of Scotland’s leading talent including Skerryvore, Mànran, RURA, Breabach and Salsa Celtica. Celtic Connections has also celebrated Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters with a full day of special events all anchored to the maritime traditions that have shaped the country’s history. The dark, wet January nights will also be brightened by a range of talks, workshops, film screenings, theatre productions, ceilidhs, exhibitions, free events and late-night sessions. Each year since 2000, Celtic Connections has partnered with a different country to create new international links and Finland is the Showcase Scotland international partner in 2020. Donald Shaw, Creative Producer for Celtic Connections, said: “Over the 18 days we will proudly showcase a rich array of unforgettable music – taking in local talent, international collaborations and inimitable artistic performances. We are a proudly outward-looking festival and this

year’s programme sets out to excite audiences and illuminate the depth and diversity of musical talent across the globe. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the festival from near and far to enjoy the inimitable atmosphere of Celtic Connections.” Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “Our UNESCO City of Music is bursting with unmissable entertainment during the 18-day festival as thousands descend on our world-class venues to experience the vibrancy and party atmosphere of this unique winter festival. As the UK’s top cultural and creative city, Glasgow is proud to host the best ceilidh in the world, champion celtic music and culture within the city and welcome Scottish, UK and international musicians and audiences to Celtic Connections 2020.” Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop, said: “Celtic Connections has become an essential part of Scotland’s festival calendar, with hundreds of performances by some of the finest bands and musicians from around the globe. “I am pleased that £100,000 of Scottish Government Expo funding has gone towards new music celebrating the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, and the fundamental and enduring message of freedom, independence and sovereignty of the people to a truly international audience.” Alan Morrison, Head of Music, Creative Scotland said: “Scotland’s traditional music is the lifeblood of the nation and the envy of the world - and there’s no better way to warm up the winter months than to put that musical heritage on the global stage that is Celtic Connections. Over the years, the festival has broadened its musical spectrum but kept its roots drawing deep from Scottish culture – past, present and future. Music is what connects us, the hand of friendship we share with the world, and for the next few weeks, Glasgow is its beating heart.”

HebCelt festival favourites Tide Lines will return to the stage for a record-breaking fourth successive year in 2020 to help mark the event’s 25th anniversary. The award-winning band will headline the Thursday night line-up at the Hebridean Celtic Festival where they made their debut in 2017. They have been annual visitors ever since and their headline appearance this year marked the first time in the festival’s history that an act had played three years in a row, a record they will now extend in 2020. In keeping with the homecoming theme to help celebrate the milestone anniversary, two other, familiar HebCelt acts will also return next year internationally renowned Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis, who will be appearing at the event for the first time in four years, and Trail West, who were last at HebCelt two years ago. Young local group Dual are also confirmed for next year. Scots rock giants Texas were previously unveiled as the headline act for the anniversary event, which will run from 15-18 July 2020, with other major artists still to be announced. HebCelt director Caroline Maclennan said: “This is a fabulous group of artists to announce for our 25th anniversary. We expect many islanders to return home to help us mark the occasion and the homecoming theme is reflected in the line-up, with some standout artists from previous festivals coming back to join the celebrations. “And there’s more to come. Early in the new year we hope to announce further fantastic artists who will be making up a brilliant and diverse line-up. We are aiming for one of our best programmes ever for our landmark year.” After launching on social media in 2016, Tide Lines have become a phenomenon. Their debut single, ‘Far Side of the World’, entered the UK download charts less than 24 hours after they were formed and their fervent online fanbase ensure their gigs sell out in minutes. Robert Robertson, the band’s vocalist, said: “We are very excited to be part of HebCelt’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
