2016 sees the return to Edinburgh of the Grand Old Dame herself – The Famous Spiegeltent. After a few years sunning herself in southern climes, she returns in all her glory to the beautiful St Andrew Square Garden, Edinburgh.

The Famous Spiegeltent, owned and run by Spiegeltmaestro David Bates, is one of the original Belgian mirror tents, which has hosted fabulous performers such as Marlene Dietrich since the 1920s. 2016 is her 21st Edinburgh birthday and she is celebrating with a wonderful programme of music, cabaret, family musicals, children’s shows, late night clubs and classic festival frivolity. The celebrations kick off with Before the Fringe (25-31 July) - a fabulous week of amazing live music for a wide range of tastes (inc Funk, Americana, singer/ songwriters, African and blues), as well as genre bending cabaret, burlesque and late night Club Spiegel shenanigans.

Before the Fringe features a fantastic international lineup of onenight-only live music including legendary bandleader and trombonist Fred Wesley & the New JBs (an 8 piece jazz-funk powerhouse led by the former James Brown and P-Funk musician, Count Basie veteran and Maceo Parker cohort) and the multiplatinum selling Irish singer Brian Kennedy (“a voice to charm the angels”). Several of the performers are appearing en route between headline shows at the prestigious Summertyne Festival and Southern Fried Festival, including vocal phenomenon Yola Carter and Celtic Americana (from Leith via Nashville) singer/songwriter Dean Owens (who will be appearing in a double bill with fellow Scot Yvonne Lyon). Completing an eclectic lineup is rising star Adam Holmes and the Embers (whose new album Brighter Still has been making waves in the itunes charts and resulted in sessions on BBC Radio 2 and Virgin Radio), a night of African rhythms from Senegal and Zimbabwe with Samba Sene & Diwan plus original Bhundu Boy Rise Kagona and his Jit

Sun, mud, rain and great music the MNS festival team look back at their TITP highlights reporting and photographs by Katy Whitelaw & Vanessa Leiper

TITP FRIDAY The sun shone brightly on Scotland for T in the Park’s opening day with everyone growing a more fiery shade of pink as Friday wore on. The morning had brought sad news about two deaths in the camp site and the brazen stealing of an ATM machine overnight, which led to some social media users calling for the festival to be halted before a note had been played.

continued on page 13

"Indigo Velvet brought tropical feelgood pop to the tent"

Concerns about transport issues and site layout from the inaugural event at T’s new Perthshire home last year appeared to have been ironed out with travel to the site relatively stress-free. The site layout had been adapted accordingly, with the King Tuts Stage moved around the back of the loch in front of Strathallan Castle and everything slightly more spaced out avoiding the bottle necks of last year. The Main Stage opened under glorious blue skies with the sensational The Temperance Movement. Featuring Glasgow frontman Phil Campbell, the blues-rock outfit was a great start to the weekend. Phil is a veteran T performer having played in some capacity at all three of the festival’s sites over the years – Strathclyde Park, Balado and now Strathallan - and described opening the event as “a huge honour and big responsibility”. Fun Loving Criminals brought some New York cool to the Main Stage and were a perfect soundtrack to the blissed out afternoon. The Coral helped create the first mass sing-a-long of the weekend, quickly overcoming technical problems which hampered the start of the set, the crowd jigging along to hits such as Pass It on and All This Is Gone as the smell of flares filled the tent. Nineties hit makers Ash were a surprising but welcomed addition to the TBreak Stage – traditionally a platform for new acts to perform. The tent was rammed with people who ecstatically danced around to classics like Girl From Mars. Scottish all girl trio The Amourettes would later rock out with thrashing guitars on the same stage. Manchester indie-band The Courteener’s payed homage to Sunday headliners LCD Sound System’s with their version of Daft Punk Is Playing At My House before their biggest hit Not 19 Forever, whilst over on the Radio 1 Stage it had been given over to dance music for the day with Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Annie Mac providing the epic beats which were being broadcast live. Jamie XX suffered from being tucked away in the re-positioned King Tuts tent in a corner of the site but the small crowd who made the effort were treated to an atmospheric set. The majority of the rest of the T revellers could all be found at The Stone Roses who were there to close the first day. Men of a certain age had been spotted reserving their spots at the Main Stage early on in the day and walking around on Friday you could have been mistaken for thinking you had been sucked into a time warp and been hurled out in the 90s, or happened to amble onto the set of the latest This Is England series, such were the number of bucket hats, John Lennon round-rimmed shades and ‘Roses tshirts. The era-defining Manchester lads did not

The last few years has seen more DJs in headline slots at the festival with Calvin Harris a favourite with the T crowd. He did not disappoint – kicking off with spectacular visuals, fireworks and the heavenly vocal of Florence Welsh in Sweet Nothing - as soon as the beat dropped everyone was dancing as far as the eye could see. Even some of the police joined in. Harris was joined by Dizzee Rascal for an energetic run through of their collaboration Hype with Dizzee launching himself into the crowd before the close of day two. The torrential rain and mud in the arena did not take away from the fantastic acts but the day was slightly soured by being trapped in the mud drenched car park, but hey, T organisers can’t do much about the weather.

TITP SUNDAY After 24 hours of relentless rain, there was a slight delay to the site opening on Sunday to allow the TITP team to bring in bark chips and hay to try and soak up some of the mud soaked areas with the King Tuts Tent badly affected.

Despite having some technical problems which rendered their keyboard sound useless for part of the set, Maximo Park played a brilliant set and dropped in some Brexit chat by urging “Scotland if you leave us, take the North East of England with you” before launching Organiser Geoff Ellis praised the site staff into Risk To Exit – the first playing of the track and emergency services for their work over in the UK. the weekend in ensuring the site and The nasal sounds of Jake Bugg were a massive festival goers were being kept as safe as crowd draw and the diverse set included plenty possible. “You can prepare for the weather but of opportunities to dance and but it was in the you can’t prepare for tragedy” he commented, more tender ballads where he made his mark. referring to the two deaths that occurred on the Soaked but happy couples embraced one night before the festival opened. another during an emotive rendition of Broken “This is some of the worst weather we have had before he finished with Lightning Bolt which he at T in the Park. T Break had a superb array of up and coming bands with The Lapelles from East Kilbride, Foreign Fox and Glasgow’s Declan Welsh amongst the acts highlights of the day’s entertainment. Talented troubadour Welsh is sure to be a rising star and has charisma and sex appeal in abundance with catchy songs and a skill for lyrical storytelling.

Flaming Lips. They have their own version of Bez who managed to get the whole crowd to have a dance off and then travel from one side of the tent to the other for song Cross The Road, crowd surfed on an inflatable unicorn and launched a home-made cardboard copy of the stolen ATM machine into the crowd. With 15 members of the band on stage at one point it was an action packed performance. Red Hot Chili Peppers kept fans waiting but had a blistering opening with Can’t Stop and it was a lesson in funk rock from the aging rockers who seemed to have pulled the biggest crowd of the weekend. It has been 10 years since the band last appeared at the festival and they have amassed so many hits that even Californication didn’t make it to the final cut of the set. I am sure the band, famous for their walks on the wild side, would have given a nod of respect to the crazy lone flag-wielding climber who scaled the PA rigging for Under The Bridge. New York electro act LCD Soundsystem had a small but perfectly formed crowd of hipsters across at the Radio 1 Stage. Vocalist James Murphy wasn’t too down though “Hey, this is okay – this crowd would fill the Barrowland’s right?” he said eagerly. He also kindly pointed out a girl sitting forlornly in the mud in a yellow poncho before dedicating the final song All My Strength to her – “Hey are you okay over there…you look cold, are you warm enough?!” Despite clearly suffering from being up against the Red Hot Chili Peppers closing on the Main Stage it was an inspiring performance which their fans adored. “Thanks so much T in the Park…we don’t do buttering up but historically this (Scotland) is our favourite crowd.”

The LCD timer on the Radio 1 Stage had run down to zero and with that Indigo Velvet brought tropical feel-good pop to it was time to slip and slide our way the tent. However, it was Colonel Mustard and through the mud back to the car The Dijon 5 who were one of the most park after an epic T 2016.

The largest gathering of Celtic cultures (and France’s biggest festival), down through the years the LIF has successfully created a concept that goes beyond borders and national or regional identities. English-speaking countries such as Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, and Ireland; Spanish-speaking Galicia and Asturias; and Australia and Acadia, representative of the Celtic Diasporas, are the principal nations that participate every year in Lorient in a celebration of a shared culture with their Breton cousins.

It is estimated that approximately half of the current population of this country-continent is of Celtic origin, particularly Irish and Scottish. In 1788, Great Britain established several penitentiaries here that served as prisons for the Irish, Scottish and Welsh. Once their sentence was served, a number of these convicts actively participated in the colonisation of the island, alongside immigrants, mostly Irish, who came to Australia to find their fortune in the gold rush of the 19th century. We like to think this gives us a unique insight into what makes a great festival tick.” Solfest has evolved continually since its inception in 2003, transitioning from a local shindig, into one of the best loved of the UK’s independent festivals. Run by a dedicated team and a small army of volunteers, Solfest has stayed true to its anti-corporate roots. This means that art and decor take the place of ubiquitous advertising and the international big names don’t drown out the voices of the hidden gems.
