The Bevvy Sisters’ celebrate 10th birthday @ Edinburgh Jazz Festival Buy Edinburgh Jazz & Blues tickets @ http://edinburghjazzfestival.com/how-to-buy-tickets.html

Appearing at the same magical venue where they so memorably made their debut back in 2006, this time as a highlight of the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, acclaimed harmony outfit The Bevvy Sisters celebrate their tenth band birthday this year in suitably sumptuous style.

Sessions, and 2014’s Plan B were greeted with equally glowing reviews. Within the current line-up, Macleod’s vocal talents have ranged across blues, jazz and folk, building on acclaim for her solo debut Crossing Tides, while Rae, born into Scotland’s leading jazz dynasty, has performed with Carol Kidd, Laura MacDonald and Trio AAB, among others. Impala fronts her own delectably noir-ish band, The New Prohibition, and Donnelly, prior to his all-original release Future Analogue, worked with Finlay Quaye and Salsa Celtica. Of the former Bevvys, Pia fronts quirky indie/folk posse

The Banana Sessions, while both Black and Rowan have gone on to make highly-praised solo albums. A special birthday set-list for this very special show will include material by all three past and present line-ups, together with newly-written songs and specially-arranged numbers featuring the full nine-piece band. www.bevvysisters.co.uk

www.facebook.com/EdinburghJazzandBluesFestival

Featuring all six past and present lead singers, this one-off show unites today’s Bevvy line-up – co-founder Heather Macleod, Scottish jazz doyenne Gina Rae and Arizona-born Cera Impala, plus instrumental mainstay and ‘Fellow’ Bevvy David Donnelly - with former Bevvys Kaela Rowan, Lindsey Black and Roberta Pia, along with percussionist James Mackintosh (Shooglenifty/Transatlantic Sessions) and double bassist Emma Smith (Gorillaz/Eliza Carthy). Originally a spin-off from all-star swing sensation The Love Boat Big Band, the Bevvys draw on the diverse sister-act heritage of the Beverleys, the Andrews, the Boswells and the Pointers, while their own cross-genre backgrounds and seasoned songwriting reinvent the all-gal trio afresh. Combining radiantly layered voices with a uniquely expansive repertoire – lush new treatments of vintage US roots/jazz numbers, discerning pop/folk covers and outstanding original material - they’ve won fervent plaudits and a devoted fan-base across the UK and beyond. Besides extensive touring and headline festival appearances including Edinburgh Fringe, Celtic Connections, Belgium’s Schots Weekend, the Shetland Jazz Festival and Orkney Folk Festival, they’ve performed with Scottish super-trio Lau, the California Feetwarmers, Mardi Gras.BB, Eliza Carthy, Dave Swarbrick and Dick Gaughan. To celebrate bagpipes being at the heart of life’s important moments, Piping Live! The surprise blew away members of Thornliebank’s Weight Watchers meeting on 9 June, as the #PopUpPiper stirred a mix of emotions in a way only bagpipes can – from shocked faces, to tears of joy and a whole lot of toe-tapping and hand-clapping. The #PopUpPiper has been introduced by Piping Live!, the world’s biggest week of piping taking place in Glasgow from 8-14 August. From Monday 13 – Sunday 19 June, the #PopUpPiper will be marking everyday wins on social media by sending people personalised messages and tunes to help them celebrate. Louise Stevenson, group leader at Weight Watchers, Thornliebank commented: “I was browsing twitter and saw a tweet looking for a moment to celebrate with a piper and immediately thought of Lily. She’s such an inspiration and motivational force within our Roddy MacLeod, Festival Director of Piping Live! Weight Watchers group and I really wanted to mark her meeting her goal weight. I couldn’t said: “We are really excited to have our think of a better way to celebrate than with the #PopUpPiper on hand next week to celebrate your moments that matter, no matter how big or bagpipes, so I contacted the #PopUpPiper. small. John McCusker : www.JohnMcCusker.co.uk

As John McCusker marks 25 years in the music business this year by being busier than ever he admits it’s not going according to plan, because he’s never had one. The renowned fiddler, composer and producer is celebrating his personal milestone with his first solo record in 13 years, as well as a tour with his band and a book of his songs. But that is just a fraction if his multi-faceted life. He continues to be sought after by other musicians to join them on stage or to produce their work. As a live and studio guest he has played with Bonnie Raitt, Patti Smith, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash, Paolo Nutini and Jools Holland, featured on recordings by Mark Knopfler, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Teenage Fanclub and Idlewild, and has also performed as a soloist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at Proms in the Park, playing his own compositions. His expanding portfolio as a producer has seen him man the controls for artists including Kris Drever, Idlewild’s Roddy Woomble, Eddi Reader, Eliza Carthy and Linda Thompson. Currently, he is producing a new album by his wife, the singer Heidi Talbot, in a state-of theart studio, a converted 18th century bothy attached to their house in the Borders, where he also made his new solo album ‘Hello, Goodbye’, the first release on his recently launched record label, Under One Sky Records.

Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands. www.ullapoolguitarfestival.com
