HebCelt Stage Awaits CalMac Culture Music Winner Tamzene Stornoway :: 19-22 July :: www.hebceltfest.com Buy tickets @ www.hebceltfest.com/booking/

Scottish singer songwriter Tamzene has won a prestigious stage slot in front of an international audience at the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival this summer. The 20-year-old multi-instrumentalist from the Highland village of Cromarty in the Black Isle, was one of the winners of the 2017 CalMac Culture Music contest, run by ferry company Caledonian MacBrayne and aimed at finding the best emerging singers and musicians. Each act submitted a YouTube video to the competition website with the chance to play at different summer festivals in Scotland. Tamzene will now play at the renowned HebCelt festival, which will be held from 19-22 July in Stornoway in the island of Lewis, and will be headlined by The Waterboys, Imelda May, Dougie MacLean and Lucy Spraggan. She said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing Stornoway, and being part of another great Scottish festival. I hope to be playing to some familiar faces too.” Tamzene started her musical career aged eight, learning piano and violin, and at 14 she took up the guitar and began writing her own material. She later attended Gordonstoun School and honed her skills busking on the streets of Inverness to raise funds for a school project to build water tanks in Thailand. She is currently a full-time student at Leeds College of Music. After a long period writing songs on her own, Tamzene recently started collaborating with Scottish songwriter Joe McAlinden at his studio in Argyll. Her debut single, ‘Lullaby’, recorded and produced by McAlinden and mixed by Grammy award-winner David Donaldson, was released in April by Belladrum Records. Tamzene was the first artist signed to the label, set up by the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival. She was one of the showcase artists at the

music business convention MUSExpo in Los Angeles from 30 April - 2 May. Previous showcase artists at the event, which focuses on A&R and talent scouting, include Katy Perry, Jessie J and LMFAO. Caroline Maclennan, HebCelt’s director, said: “We are delighted to welcome Tamzene to the festival where she will be performing to our international audience. She is a real talent and someone we are very excited about bringing to HebCelt.

“Providing a platform for young musicians like Tamzene fits well with our philosophy to encourage and promote emerging artists.” CalMac Ferries is a long-time supporter of HebCelt and has confirmed it is to sponsor the event again later this year. Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival launches its full programme Edinburgh :: 14-23 July :: www.edinburghjazzfestival.com Buy tickets @ www.edinburghjazzfestival.com/programme/concerts.html?rl=1496423393

2017 is a special year for Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. Over 10 summer days we celebrate 100 years of Jazz with a range of unique performances and special events, as Edinburgh celebrates 70 years of Festivals. The programme, packed with uplifting music, features over 170 concerts, with an eclectic array of performers across varied styles and generations from jazz legends and established blues stars to newcomers at the start of their careers, as the Festival once again creates its distinctive, one-of-a-kind event. No other Festival covers Jazz and Blues, across all the styles with such depth and quality, and so many unique events. Musical heavy-hitters in 2017 include guitar greats, John Scofield and Mike Stern, who are both performing with all star bands; The Bad Plus, the group changed the face of the piano trio; new charismatic star singer and pianist Kandace Springs; the Music Makers Blues Revue with a galaxy of legendary southern blues veterans; Sarah McKenzie, the successor to Diana Krall. The ebullient Davina Sowers returns for an extended Festival residency and is joined by Italian troubadours Rumba de Bodas, who also stay for the ten days. The Festival celebrates the Centenary of Jazz with a decidedly Scottish flavour, with the annual Expo series of performances playing an expanded role. Seonaid Aitken celebrates Ella Fitzgerald, Tommy Smith salutes Coltrane; Konrad Wiszniewski and Euan Stevenson are inspired by Stan Getz; Tom Gordon is swinging like Basie, Ryan Quigley revives Dizzy Gillespie, and Calum Gourlay rejigs Thelonious Monk; along with a host of other modern interpretations of the works of the jazz greats. Edinburgh pianist, Brian Kellock is in residency for the ten nights playing in a host of different projects which are close to his heart and with a series of guests including Lianne Caroll, Scott Robinson, Fionna Duncan. New Orleans is where jazz began and the first jazz recording was made in 1917. The city’s music has evolved in many exciting directions but still remains an extraordinary melting pot of musical styles and great players. Its one of the most vibrant places for jazz and blues today. In 2017, we present over 30 concerts featuring New Orleans music, from the Louis Armstrong inspired New Orleans Swamp Donkeys Traditional Jass Band, to the second line brass of Soul Brass Band to the funk of Smokers World and Dumpstaphunk, the new modern jazz star of the trombone, David L Harris, and the hip-hop infused Hot 8 Brass Band. We also offer classic New Orleans Cajun music with the Savoy Family Cajun Band. New Orleans guests are sprinkled through out the programme playing with Scottish bands as diverse as Swampfog, and the Spirits of Rhythm. The highlight of the season is the Festival’s gala concerts with the New Orleans Classic Big Band, the singer, Ingrid Lucia, and an all star selection of small groups.

Looking to the new, the Festival features a hugely exciting new group of young Scottish jazz musicians, including singer Luca Manning, saxophonist Matt Carmichael, pianist Fergus McCreadie, fiddler Charlie Stewart, and bassist David Bowden. We are also delighted to host a new wave of musicians from Europe including Aga Derlak (Poland), Dock In Absolute (Luxembourg), Fragile Bliss (Czech Republic), Jacob Karlzon Trio (Sweden) and a trio of young pianists from Italy Alessandro Lanzoni, Manuel Magrini and Enrio Zanisi. The Edinburgh University Jazz Summer School expands to include a course for singers in addition to the regular course for instrumentalists. Cross The Tracks celebrates cutting–edge new music, crossing the boundaries between jazz and contemporary urban music. Ibibio Sound Machine, Yussef Dayes, Hot 8 Brass Band, Paul Harrison Sugarwork, Herschel 36 and Soweto Kinch connect us to the worlds of hip-hop, afrolatin, punk and electronica. Our Blues programme crosses all the boundaries too: Southern blues, delta blues, Mississippi blues, Chicago blues, electric blues, acoustic blues; the Festival hosts American stars and all the best homegrown talent. Lisa Mills, Hamilton Loomis, Mr Sipp, Brandon Santini, Earl Thomas, and John Nemeth, Grainne Duffy, Matt Schofield and Connie Lush are amongst the international visitors, with the Scottish contingent including The Jensen Interceptors, Gerry Jablonski, Dana Dixon, Charlotte Marshall, Main Street Blues and Neil Warden. We mark the end of the legendary Edinburgh Blues band Blues N Trouble with a tribute gig put together by front man Tim Elliott, and we signal Tim’s ongoing interests as he turns his attentions to a new project, saluting the sound of the great blues shouters of the 50s “The Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund ensures that Scotland’s own exceptional talent is placed and 60s. at the heart of our world-renowned festivals and The Festival also features gospel (The Blind Boys I’m pleased that we’ve awarded more over £1 of Alabama, The Coco Mamas), Cajun (The million to the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival Savoy Family), Western Swing (Cow Cow since 2009.
