When Richard left in 1986 his place was taken by Pete Wishart, which completed the classic Runrig line up that was to endure for a decade. In 1997 Donnie left to pursue a political career and his place was taken by Canadian Bruce Guthro. Pete was later replaced by Brian Hurren in 2001 to put in place the current line-up. Last year the band staged Party on the Moor, a massive gig at Muir of Ord, near Inverness, to celebrate their 40th anniversary and the remarkable journey from island dance band to international phenomenon. Their 2016 tour starts in Aberdeen in February after two years of writing and recording the new album. A single, also called The Story, and video are already available. HebCelt has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international showpiece for Celtic and traditional music, generating more than £20 million for the local economy over two decades. Last year, it marked its 20th anniversary by hosting its biggest number of live performances ever with more than 50 hours of music and arts events staged in the main arena in the grounds of Lews Castle, as well as an Lanntair arts centre in the town centre and other venues in rural areas. Audiences included visitors travelling from throughout the UK and Europe as well from the US, Australia, Japan, Canada, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Tiree Music Festival wins major award at Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards Tiree : 15-17 July : www.tireemusicfestival.co.uk TICKETS (Early Birds from 28 Nov) @ http://tireemusicfestival.co.uk/

A small island music festival almost wrecked by storms this summer has blown away the opposition to win a major tourism award.

accommodation and conditions improved the following day.

During this year’s Tiree Music Festival more than 1,000 people had to be evacuated from the site because of strong winds. A huge response from the community and local businesses helped find shelter for festival-goers in schools, the island airport and people's homes so the event was able to continue.

“This year the festival faced unprecedented weather conditions which could have forced it to be abandoned. However, a truly remarkable effort by the organisers and the island community ensured it not just recovered but flourished in the following days.”

The festival, which attracted a sellout 1,700 audience - more than three times the island population has been voted Best Cultural Event or Festival at the prestigious annual Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards.

The HITA judges said of the festival: “The tiny, seemingly inaccessible Isle of Tiree has overcome local constraints to build its annual music festival into an incredible, cultural event which brings economic benefits to the community, highlights traditional and contemporary music and makes imaginative use of sponsorship. It is a worthy winner that has enhanced the overall visitor experience.

And in a double success for the island, the Tiree Wave Classic windsurfing event also won HITA’s new Best Sporting Event category,

The awards were presented on 13 November by Fergus Ewing, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism, at a glittering ceremony in the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness. Pandorafest will be Scotland's first music festival that supports women musicians. In 2015 the major festivals displayed a massive gender imbalance, of the 87 acts that were announced, 78 were all male, 3 were female and 6 were mixed groups that was an 89.6% all male line up.* "As far as Scotland is concerned - this is not okay" says Pandora Fest! Pandorafest is being set up solely to address this gender imbalance in the music industry. As the above figures show live acts in many major festivals are predominantly male heavy, despite a massive number of popular, talented and top selling female artists. Ellie Goulding has been outspoken about her criticism of music festivals for not booking more female artists. She also claims that sexism is a problem across the whole industry. "I got annoyed when Glastonbury had so many men on the line-up." - the singer told Cosmopolitan magazine. Pandorafest will be a one day music festival packed full of live music from female singer/songwriters, women musicians and female fronted bands Erin Bennett : www.facebook.com/ErinBennettMusic all playing from 12noon-11pm.
