The 15th Carrying Stream Festival will take place in Edinburgh this year from 9-16 November and the Scottish Storytelling Centre hosts a trio of events, plus an exhibition by Charles Nasmyth which includes a large portrait of Hamish Henderson. Professor Gary West, Personal Chair in Scottish Ethnology at the University of Edinburgh, has woven the stories together to create a play being performed on Armistice Day at the Centre with Scott Gardiner, Chris Wright and Charlie West, alongside music and poems from Seaforth Highlander E. Alastair McDonald, firmly regarded as one of Scotland's leading musical minstrels, leads a musical tribute to friend and mentor Morris Blythman (1919-1981), aka the poet and songwriter ‘Thurso Berwick’ on Mon 14 Nov. In addition to his innumerable television, radio and stage appearances worldwide, Alastair is a prolific recording artist with a vast repertoire of traditional, contemporary and original material. He has worked with established theatre figures such as Jimmy Logan, Calum Kennedy, John Cairney and Russell Hunter, as well as working with comrades-in-arms in the world of "folk" such as Josh McRae, Dominic Behan, Matt McGinn, Billy Connolly and Hamish Imlach. “Morris Blythman was easily one of the best human beings I have been privileged to work with and learn from and is perhaps the most significant powerhouse of the ‘Folk Revival’ in Scotland,” states Alastair. “He mentored me through my early career and was an influence on so many folksingers like Robin Hall and

Music Development Officer at the Tolbooth, Kenny Bates: “It’s really exciting to be bringing the festival back for its third year. It’s built a following year on year and we’ve been really lucky to be able to bring through some of the most exciting indie, alternative and progressive acts in the country. The thing I like most about the festival is that with more time and space to play with we’re able to stage compelling acts of all levels. This ranges from artists who have had notable success doing things in their own mould like RM Hubbert, The Lafontaines and Be Charlotte, alongside the more obscure and lesser known but equally enthralling - artists playing quite niche styles, acts like The Pale Kids, Chump, December ’91 and Stock Manager.

Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club will be bringing his selection of classic tracks to the Apres-ski party. Put your dancing shoes on because the UK’s best loved funk and soul DJ is armed with a trunk of funk and he’s not afraid to use it. Performing a DJ set over the weekend is Mike Skinner, the man behind the musical phenomenon that was The Streets for over ten years. In that time he won an Ivor Novello, a Brit, and changed the sound of UK music forever. Now that he has retired the moniker of The Streets, Mike continues to push things forward with his genre bending DJ sets.

Other acts appearing over the weekend include, musical duo The 2 Bears composed of Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell, London’s Horsemeat Dicso who will be bringing the disco vibes, and emerging Highland’s based producer Mark Mackenzie. Dougie Brown from Groove Cairngorm said ‘We are delighted to be bringing another incredible line-up of artists to our very own snowsports festival right here in the UK. After the huge success of our first outing last year we can’t wait to be partying up and down the mountain again next February!’ CairnGorm Mountain's Ross Coulter added ‘Having already had our first dusting of snow on the tops of the Cairngorms, we are super excited to be able to announce such a great lineup for next year’s festival. The event was a big hit last year and we are looking forward to building on this by making it even bigger and better in 2017!’ Free shuttle busses will be running between Aviemore, Cairngorm Mountain and Badaguish throughout the weekend to all ticket holders.
