Hebridean Talent On Show At Celtic Connections 2018 Glasgow :: 3 February :: www.celticconnections.com Buy tickets @ www.celticconnections.com

A show celebrating Hebridean summer is being reprised for the music and culture that wowed an 25th anniversary Celtic international audience this Connections festival next year. ‘Blasta’ (Gaelic for tasty or delicious) was specially commissioned by the Hebridean Celtic Festival for this year’s Interceltique de Lorient, Europe’s largest Celtic Festival, which was held in August. HebCelt curated the sell-out opening concert at Lorient, when Scotland was this year’s Country of Focus, and helped kick start a number of events featuring Scottish artists during the ten-day festival. Blasta will take to the Celtic Connections stage on Saturday, 3 February in the Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow. It features some of the leading Lewis singers and musicians in the modern era, including Anna Murray, Mischa Macpherson, Ceitlin Smith and Josie Duncan. They will be joined by singer and piper Calum Alex Macmillan, who had to withdraw from the Lorient show after breaking his ankle. HebCelt director Caroline Maclennan said: “Blasta was one of the stand-out shows at our hugely-successful Lorient concert and showcased the musical talent of the Outer Hebrides and the culture of Gaeldom on an international platform. We are delighted these incredible singers and musicians are being brought back together for Celtic Connections and that once again we will be bringing a taste of HebCelt to Glasgow.” This year HebCelt picked up both the Festival of the Year award and the Grand Prix prize at the Scottish Event Awards. It is also shortlisted in the Best Cultural Event or Festival category in the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards, a title it won in 2014, and is one of only two Scottish festivals among the ten finalists for a UK Greener Festival Award.

Over the final weekend of 2017 soundfestival we will take opera out of the traditional concert hall. The weekend will open with the second performance of Belongings, our co-commission with Tête à Tête, this time staged on the sleeper service from London to Aberdeen. There will then be three days of staged and pop up events.”

soundfestival is now well underway in Aberdeenshire and runs until 11 November with over 40 performances presented in venues across the region as well as a number of pop-up events, talks, workshops and open rehearsals. The opening weekend of 2017 soundfestival saw the return of the acclaimed Quatuor Bozzini as part of a programme of events entitled “Sounding the North” which is presented in partnership with the University of Aberdeen. The final weekend, meanwhile, sees the return of the popular “Out of the Box” opera initiative in which operas are staged in unusual places and spaces. Throughout the festival sound will stage the first in a number of showcases for “endangered musical instruments”. This year the festival focuses on the bassoon

“Commissions of new work are central to soundfestival and this a fascinating variety of specially commissioned work will be premiered at the festival,” says Robertson. “As well as Belongings we have specially co-commissioned with Red Note Ensemble a new work for bassoonist Pascal Gallois from one of the UK’s leading composers, Benedict Mason; we have continued our ongoing collaboration with Musiques Démesurées in the co-commissioning of two new works one by Scottish composer John de Simone and the other by French composer Stéphane Magnin; and thanks to the PRS for Music Foundation we have been able to commission a very special piece from Colin Riley who has collaborated with writers for whom Place is a recurring theme. The outcome of this collaboration is ‘In Place’ a set of songs for vocalist and ensemble.” On the evening of 3 November (Salmon Bothy, Portsy) there will be a performance of Clyde’s Water by young local composer Rory Comerford which has been reworked for seven bassoons and electronics. Also on the evening of 3 November the public is invited to an open rehearsal and discussion (Phoenix Centre. The programme is a musical journey to Switzerland, France, a Shakespearian island, the Pyrenees, England (including the Lake District) and the Scottish Hebrides. The focus on the bassoon culminates in concerts featuring the renowned French bassoonist, Pascal Gallois, (9 November, The Anatomy Rooms). Gallois joins soundfestival’s Associate Ensemble, Red Note in the world premiere of a sound-Red Note co-commission from Benedict Mason. Gallois will also give a solo performance on Saturday 10 November (The Anatomy Rooms). The following Friday sound’s annual Composers Day (The Anatomy Rooms) will feature writing for the bassoon and for smallscale opera. Featured composers on the day will be Benedict Mason and Errollyn Wallen The second Out of the Box opera weekend begins on Thursday 9 November with a restaging of Belongingssoundfestival co-commission with London’s Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival which was premiered on the sleeper from Aberdeen to London earlier in the summer. This time it will be staged on the journey from London to Aberdeen. The piece will then be restaged on the heritage railway in Deeside on the following afternoon. 2017 soundfestival culminates in Créations sans frontiere (The Anatomy Rooms). This crossborder residency project developed by sound and Musiques Démesurées has given French and Scottish musicians the opportunity to work collaboratively with composers Stéphane Magnin (France) and John De Simone (Scotland) and contemporary musical experts Juliet Fraser and Maxime Echardour to develop new works for this unusual combination of instruments. The concert features works by de Simone and Magnin specially commissioned by sound and Musiques Démesurées Tickets for soundfestival including a range of special offers and concessions are available through Aberdeen Box Office on 01224 641122 or via the link above.

Glasgow :: 26 October - 5 November :: www.sonic-a.co.uk Buy tickets @ www.sonic-a.co.uk/sonica-2017/

Sonica takes place in venues across Glasgow and in total the programme boasts over forty international artists from twelve countries across five continents, with 13 UK premieres, four world premieres, eight new Cryptic commissions, installations and family friendly events. The festival opened in spectacular style with the UK premiere of the unique underwater concert AquaSonic at Tramway. Nine years in the making, Denmark’s Between Music have worked with deep sea divers, scientists and instrument-makers to create compositions for five musicians submerged in vast tanks of water that glow in the darkened space. With performers both singing beneath the surface using specially developed vocal techniques and playing instruments custom-designed for use underwater – including adapted strings and percussion – AquaSonic melds whale song and chamber music to produce an unmissable, otherworldly event that promises to be one of the highlights of the Autumn cultural calendar.

Messier’s (Québec) FIELD (UK Premiere), which use electromagnetic transducer microphones to create a soundscape from the previously inaudible and invisible. Inspired by the idea of the African talking drum, Nicola L. Exploring the boundaries where music and language overlap, Hein and Truniger use hybrid instruments – constructed from drumskins and electronic components – as devices to turn written texts into pulses of light and percussive sound.

Sonica 2017 steps out of the art gallery confines to present quirky works in a range of unexpected venues across the city. Mathis Nitschke’s short opera Viola will place its audience into a St Enoch's Centre shop window (4 & 5 November), turning the whole of the outside world into a stage, whilst The Megaphone Project, by Australian-based Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey, will fill the Kelvingrove Bandstand (28 29 October & 3 – 5 November) with bright red megaphones of different shapes and sizes, to create a thrilling chorus of disembodied voices as part of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music.
