In the beginning Biggar Little Festival was the Tinto folk festival, but the outbreak of foot-andmouth disease in the United Kingdom in 2001 caused a crisis in British agriculture and tourism, and many rural events like Tinto were cancelled. All was not lost, and Biggar Little Festival grew from the seeds that remained. From small beginnings in 2002, it is now widely recognised as one of the biggest, best, and most popular festivals in Scotland. Located on the boundary between Lanarkshire and the Borders, it would be understandable if Biggar was a little confused about its real identity. But not so! It is an active, independent community, and defines itself by what it does.

To have continually staged an event like this in our relatively remote part of the world for two decades, against a backdrop of challenging economic conditions, is a huge achievement. “We have seen HebCelt grow from a small local, festival attracting 1,000 people, into an international festival which attracts over 50 per cent of our audience from off-island, many coming from all parts of the world. We are still very rooted in our community and we are grateful for our loyal local following.”

She also paid tribute to the sponsors, supporters and volunteers who contribute time and resources to help sustain HebCelt and to help ensure it can continue to attract quality artists despite its location. “We are extremely appreciative of everyone who contributes to HebCelt. Ullapool The third annual multi-venue music festival from 2-4 October Scotland’s largest music platform Tenement TV

So why is the UGF so special? Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands. www.ullapoolguitarfestival.com
