Seven different venues are being used for a festival that’s become a firm favourite on Scotland’s live music scene since its launch in 2007 to fill a gap left by the much missed, Billy

The CCA, The Glad Café, Drygate, St Andrews in the Square, Saint Luke’s, The Admiral and The Hug and Pint will host this year’s shows with each venue known for its own special atmosphere. The opening night had a very special curtain raiser, The Late Great Townes Van Zandt Show, with the blessing of Townes’ son, John, features Rachel Sermanni, Jefferson Hamer, Roseanne Reid, Davie Scott from The Pearl Fishers, Jonas & Jane, plus one or two more. The weekend sees three shows in all on the Saturday 7 October, including a matinee, while the final day on Sunday 8 October offers two separate matinee performances and then the grand evening finale. “We have a terrific range of acts for Glasgow Americana, some well established with others starting to make a real name for themselves,” said Kevin Morris, the festival director. “Everyone who buys tickets creates a special buzz at our shows, and we appreciate their continuing support and that of Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council as well. “I hope everyone has a great time.” Looking at the festival overall - “We have a terrific range of acts for Glasgow Americana, some well established with others starting to make a real name for themselves,” said Kevin Morris, the festival director.

the Another Success As HebCelt Shortlisted For National Awards mns collection …. Stornoway :: 18-21 July :: www.hebceltfest.com Buy 2018 tickets @ www.hebceltfest.com/booking/ The internationally-acclaimed Hebridean Celtic Festival has been shortlisted for two national awards to mark its significant cultural and economic impact on its host islands. HebCelt has been confirmed as a finalist in both the Festival of the Year and Cultural Event of the Year categories in the annual Scottish Event Awards. The awards celebrate a range of events that took place in Scotland between 20 May 2016 and 23 June 2017. The 21st HebCelt, headlined by Runrig, was held from 13-16 July 2016 in Stornoway and was the most successful in its history. An estimated 18,000 people – by far the event’s highest audience – savoured four days of outstanding music in Stornoway and surrounding communities. An independent economic impact study showed the festival directly generated £1.4 million. But its wider knock-on impact on local businesses meant a net economic effect of £2.2 million and helped safeguard 40 tourism-related jobs. The survey found that 63 per cent of festival goers came from outside Lewis and Harris, with almost three quarters saying they were in the area to attend HebCelt. The 2017 HebCelt, headlined by The Waterboys, Imelda May and Dougie MacLean, was another successful event. The festival organisers followed it up by curating a hugely-successful sell-out opening concert at the Lorient Interceltic Festival in Brittany on 5 August – Europe’s largest Celtic festival - when Scotland was Guest Country of Honour. HebCelt director Caroline Maclennan said: “Being shortlisted in two categories is a huge honour. Coming soon after another highly successful festival, and our triumphant contribution at Lorient, is a great reward for everyone involved in organising these events.” The HebCelt audience is drawn from across the UK and also abroad, including Europe, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Many of them come back year after year – 70 per cent of the audience are returners and a further 17 per cent come on recommendation, demonstrating the high regard for the event. The Hebridean Celtic Festival is a not-for-profit charitable event firmly rooted within its community and is almost entirely managed and produced by voluntary effort.
Dougie MacLean :: photo by Josh Morrison www.dougiemaclean.com
The festival has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international showpiece for roots, Celtic and traditional music. It is estimated it has generated more than £20 million for the local economy over two decades. The 2016 HebCelt was the most successful in the event’s 21-year history. In 2015 HebCelt was selected as one of the top 10 UK summer festivals for the fifth year in succession by influential publication Songlines. In 2014 HebCelt was voted Best Event or Festival at the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards. It has also been ranked Best Large Festival at the industry-sponsored Scottish Event Awards and won Best Event of the Year honours at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Tickets for 2018 are now on sale!

International acts.
From 15 to 19 November Dundee will be host to a stellar line-up, featuring some of the best musicians from the local and American jazz and blues scene.
The Gardyne Theatre will host two historical concerts that set the scene on the centenary year: A Night in New Orleans, featuring the irrepressible singer, Alison Affleck, with her all star traditional band, The Copper Cats, present a show that’s a riot of fun; an exuberant take on early blues jazz and early jazz from the 1920s and 1930s. It’s good time, swinging vintage jazz - a mix of Tin Pan Alley, the Great American Songbook standards, and traditional New Orleans Blues as sung by Bessie Smith, Mildred Bailey, Louis Armstrong and Ma Rainey. ‘Music from another time and place, which puts smiles on the faces of the here and now’ (The Herald). The biggest jazz star in Scotland today is undoubtedly Seonaid Aitken - winner of the Scottish Jazz Award as Best Vocalist 2017 and many other awards - and the singer (and violinist), has put together a special show for the centenary year, presenting the greatest star of Swing – Ella Fitzgerald. She’s supported by the outstanding young Big Band, The Groove Merchant Jazz Orchestra, featuring some of the hottest new jazz musicians on the scene, including Fergus McCreadie, Stephen Henderson and David Bowden (also playing as Fergus McCreadie Trio on Thursday night); and the classy vocalist, Sam West, with whom she reprises the unforgettable duets between Ella and Louis Armstrong.
Dundee Jazz Festival has always featured the Blues, with its umbilical link to jazz, and in 2017 there are two contrasting concerts. From California via New York comes the sensational Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, probably the finest exponent of old-fashioned classic and country blues. He plays guitar, piano, violin and five strings banjo and sings as though he was with Leadbelly and Blind Lemon Jefferson when the Blues were born. His first Scottish concert also features Scotland’s top blues team, Blues n’Trouble’s Tim Elliott and Sandy Tweeddale, with their acoustic group, The Troublemakers. At the other end of the blues spectrum is electric blues/rock and we present two groups that represent the best on the British and Irish scenes: Grainne Duffy Band and Gerry Jablonski Band. Jablonski’s hard hitting, dynamic, and powerful group are well kent in Dundee, but rarely heard in concert settings. They’re one of the most arresting blues outfits in the country
right now. They’ll open for Duffy, a major new star, whose smoky voice and often-heartbreaking songs draw comparisons with Bonnie Raitt. Last year’s debut at the Reading Rooms was a huge triumph with Soweto Kinch fusing jazz and hip hop. This year one of the most exciting band on the hiphop scene, The Mouse Outfit - fronted by UK hip-hop legend Dr Syntax and verbal acrobat Sparkz - bring the 9–piece band’s horn heavy and funk driven live show, featuring original grooves with medleys of classic hip-hop, b-boy and funk breaks spiced with jaw-dropping lyrical acrobatics. Classic sounds from the golden age of hip-hop, with soul, jazz and reggae influences. “A slick combination of quality samples and fiendish beats. The smorgasbord of soul, jazz, funk and reggae influences… some of Britain’s most promising emcees” (UK Hip Hop). The Unicorn is a regular venue for the Festival and this year will feature a Saturday afternoon concert, with the renowned Tennessee-based Americana singer-songwriter, Nathan Bell. Bell’s roots are in the blues and in brilliant, hard hitting storytelling. He was a showstopper at this year’s Celtic Connections, and we’re sure his direct and magnetic personality will win him a new legion of fans at his first Dundee show. Finally, the “Festival within a Festival” that is “Jazz In The Ferry” will be back on Sunday afternoon, 19th November, where 10 acts will play five venues over three hours, and audiences are invited to roam the streets of Broughty Ferry seeking out the hostelries where the hottest music is played. 100 years of jazz and a little sprinkling of blues will be on offer at this hugely popular event. Agnese Daverio, Festival Director, said: “ We’re pushing the envelope this year. More concerts; more international musicians; a bigger stylistic range; we’re planning to put Dundee Jazz Festival on to the international map for Jazz, with a distinctive programme that’s rooted in tradition, but aiming to reach out to new audiences in all sorts of new ways. Furthermore, we’re very excited to have many women in this year’s programme, changing the trend and perception of their role in the music scene – as well as presenting Jaimeo Brown’s social commentary tackling inequalities with a mesmerizing work of art. We hope to welcome back old friends, and say hello to many people trying out the Jazz Festival for the first time. There will be super-attractive advance ticket deals, and special offers for students and other groups to make sure everyone has a chance to enjoy the Festival. The Festival is also looking for volunteers to join the team and help deliver this fantastic event.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Festival presents two musicians who are at the forefront of the current jazz scene in New York – both opening jazz up to new audiences: Becca Stevens was voted by the US Jazz Bible, Downbeat, the rising star female vocalist of this year, and yet the rock and pop world find her equally alluring. She was the lead vocalist in Bjorkestra, and she’s also been compared to Joanna Newson and Joni Mitchell. The New York Times hailed her “deep melody and lyrical caprice” and Ticketmaster said “In the league of current female singer-songwriters, Stevens sits atop with a clear 15-point lead; her live performances are simply among the best shows you will catch anywhere on the planet.“ The drummer, Jaimeo Brown, also from New York, has emerged from a career as a sideman with Stevie

Overlooking Holy Island, the festival for over 18s provides a real celebration of music and the arts, with fun, togetherness and nature being at the core of the event’s identity. This year, the 3 day camping festival played host to over 100 acts across 7 stages, with Scottish indie-rockers The View closing the mainstage on Friday night followed by The Fratellis on the Saturday night. Conleth added; “Whilst we’re definitely keen to retain our much-loved boutique festival vibe, we do want to continuously take things up a notch in terms of the event programming, site design and our line-up. In time, we’d love to secure a headline act of Glastonbury proportions… Imagine – Guns & Roses or Foo Fighters playing to an intimate audience overlooking Holy Island, that would be the ultimate dream! We can’t do this on our own though, we need support from the community in order to continue to develop what we whole-heartedly believe could become the best small festival in the UK. We strongly urge people to pledge to buy their 2018 tickets early so they can take advantage of the cheaper prices and so we can start booking the best acts, crack on with planning and raise the bar further for next year’s festival.”
